5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing resource for Muslim parents and children
As an American Muslim, I have always been dismayed at the lack of learning tools that are available to Muslim children growing up in the Western world.Yusuf Islam has helped fill this void with the creation of this book and especially the CD or tapes that can be bought seperately.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I love this book!!!I find it a very inspiring way to start each day.I keep it by my bed and read each daily passage before I get out of bed.A great way to keep the joy and love of God with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
Anyone leaning towards attaining a peace of mind for a few minutes everyday. In wanting to know right from wrong written in a beautiful and poetic style; anyone enclosed in the domain of modern superficiality wanting to tear through the murky membrane into a world that ignores materialistic credentials, THAN (it took me a while to get there, I know) this is the book to have.It is a pretty compilation of readings from the Muslim Holy book: the Quran.Followed by a quote from the teachings and observations of theologians and sufi saints of the Middle Ages.A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bounty of Allah
Dear fellow readers, whether you're Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or anything else, I highly recommend that you read "The Bounty of Allah, Daily Reflections from the Quran and Islamic Tradition".This is a lovely little book, well worth the time it takes to read 'a lesson a day'.As I was, you too will me amazed at the beautiful and helpful verses and sayings contained in this little book.If this is Islam (and it obviously is...straight from the original sources!), I LOVE it!I think you'll like it too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Every African ( born in Africa and born in America should read this book
If I were able to purchase cases of this text I would purchase them and give one to every Muslim and non-muslim African born in Africa and every African born in America who thinks he/she are rightfully called African-American!Especially the Africans born in America who plague withself hate !We were africans when were forced here and we are still africans ! Example a african lion breed in an american zoo is still called an african lion even if it's born in so-called America !A camel with two humps is still call a India camel as oppose to a camel from the desert with on hump of the Bilad of Sudan in the Sahara desert! Think!!!!!!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed
This is a significant study that suffers, however, from insufficient knowledge of Islam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden history of Muslims in America
I LOVED this book. The author brings a refreshingly AfroCentric, cosmopolitan viewpoint to the subject of African-American history. Ms. Diouf is sympathetic to and understands Islam. She loves Africa. She loves the people of Africa. She knows and respects the descendants of African slaves in the Americas. I consider all of this a big plus when telling this history. She brings a fresh perspective to a subject of monumental significance to millions of people all over the globe, a chapter in history which has impacted so many, and which is so misunderstood.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars God has more names than 99
This is a nice book especially if you're learning Arabic---that is how to read Arabic because the Calligraphy is large. The introduction gives good and necessary info. This book gives the major names (99)however; God/Allah has 2,999 names. The book is simple and easy to use. It would have been nicer if the names were colored or colored in.

4-0 out of 5 stars A short book on dhikr
This is a nice little book that is supposedly for meditation. On each page, it has arabic calligraphy of a particular name of God, its transliteration, its translation, and a few short words on the effects of meditating (or remembering Allah through this name, called "dhikr") using this name. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful aid to meditation--I'd give it 10 stars!!!
I am not a Muslim, but I love this book. Each page has one of the names of God, illlustrated in beautiful calligraphy, with a transliteration of the Arabic, and an English translation. For example, "Al-Hakim, The Wise, He who has wisdom in all orders and actions." Then it has a brief word of advice about praying this name and the beneficial results of that prayer. This is not a book to READ about Islam or about God, but a book to PRAY. I have bought several copies and given them as gifts to Muslim friends. It's a shame that it's out of print. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Catchy title incoherent content
I picked up this book as title looked very interesting. I reada good part of the book in travel. The book does a fairlyin-depth objective analysis of a few specific case studies (eg Rushdie affair in UK, Hijab issue in France and Nation of Islam/Louis Frakhan coverage). However, these are but random samplings of events which got a lot of media coverage but do a poor job of reflecting the overall Muslim presence in the West. Not an easy read and not as objective as I hoped.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the title, go by the subtitle
I would really like to know why the author chose 'Allah in the West' asthe title(perhaps for sales). His book has nothing to say about the conceptof Allah at all. The subtitle is accurate, it should have been the title. Its tone is that of a universitystudy. Provides a lot of history aboutMuslim organizations in Britain and France.Totally ignores Muslims ingeneral in the US but focuses on the Black Muslim movement instead. To methe Black Muslim movement in the US is a very different type oforganization so putting it in the same book as studies of the Muslimorganizations in Britain and France does not strike the right chord. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Distorted Perspective
Opportunistically takes advantage of the current stereotypes of the Muslim world. Incorrect and skewed portrayal of Islam. Takes one tiny aspect and zooms in. How is a picture of people praying to God an image of "militant" anything? Abbas is a professional photographer, so he makes a living from his pictures. But this is simply taking advantage of the current mood to make a mint for himself. It does educate, vivify, inspire or teach. He is hiding behind the cover of the great Magnum Photos umbrella. If you really want to see what photojournalism of different cultures is like, see Cartier-Bresson's book about India. Poor HCB must be turning in his grave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Pictures of Muslim World
Mr. Abbas, a long-standing member of the internationally renowned Magnum photo agency, has made a memorable photographic record of his journey inside and around the "muslim world". Traveling in 29 countries, from Iran to Saudia Arabia to United States to China, Abbas documents Muslim life and tries to make sense of what he sees for himself and the reader.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype
This beautiful coffee--table book of black and white photos is not well-represented by the excerpts available.Yes, the section on Iran has many pictures of frothing-at-the-mouth mobs surging through the streets, brandishing fists and assault rifles. No, the rest of the book is nothing like that. There are some ghastly pictures of war dead in the section on Kuwait, and the inevitable images of uzi-toting worshippers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, but nothing else like the featured parts. The book is much more sensitive and insightful than that.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
English readers can begin to explore Islamic texts directly. Shah Wali Allah writes in a difficult style; Hermansen smoothes the way considerably. The biographical introduction is helpful. Rather than try to re-interpretIslam for themselves, modern Muslims should spend their time and energylearning from those who used their monumental knowledge and experience forthe task. Another layer to add to the complexity of "orthodoxSufism." Paperback in the works??? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Propoganda for converts
Despite the fact that this book tries to be honest and includes some chapters on 'controversial' aspects of the Koran such as war, it is still simply an appologists account of the book.We are talking about a book that is basically a major hate text like Mien Kampf, that orders its beleivers to: "Slay them wherever you find them. Fight against them till idolatry is no more and God's religion reigns supreme" (Sura 2:190), "Seek out your enemies relentlessly" (4:103), "Make war on them till idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme" (8:36) etc...
4-0 out of 5 stars Good foundation knowledge of Islam and the Koran
I live in a country surrounded by predominantly Muslim countries. About 20 percent of my country's population is Muslim, so a good understanding of Islam is both important and useful, and what better way to understand Islam through knowing the Koran? This book covers most of the important topics in the Koran. Do not expect an in-depth coverage for a book less than 300 pages. It gives you the basic knowledge and hopefully stimulates your interest in the holy book of the Muslims. I already know quite a fair bit about Islam before reading this book, as I have some Muslim friends. But glad to say that the author still managed to add to my knowledge. The most important contribution of this book, in my opinion, is that it clarifies some common misconceptions of Islam and Muslims. Read it with an open mind and I am sure you will be captivated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating and excellent resource about the Koran
If you want to learn everything about Islam and the Koran, this is the book for you. Of course, it doesn't really discuss absolutely everything, as that would probably require a hundred volumes or so, but it summarizes all the basic points. This book talks about an interesting variety of subjects, including the origin of the Koran, Prophet Muhammad's life, basic Islamic beliefs, etc. It also includes fun topics such as the jinn, miracles, and science. It is written in a simple format in an unformal writing style, which adds to its appeal. I read it almost from cover to cover and quite enjoyed it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Illuminating Look At Terrorism - Review of "Allah's Torch" by Tracy Dahlby
Anyone who has been reading The White Rhino Report on a regular basis will be familiar with "Allah's Torch" from my description of last week's incident at Fenway Park. You may have wondered what kind of a book could have ignited such a controversy. My answer simply is: "A remarkable book."
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good background story on how the worldwide Islamic Insurrection is maturing in Indonesia
Allah's Torch is a very good book on how the worldwide Islamic Insurrection is maturing in Indonesia. While done in a somewhat story/journalistic format (it has specific dates and places and some names are changed but it does not appear that the primary people who someone wanting to conduct research on the subject have had their names changed such as Abu Bakar Bashir, Imam Samudra, Jaffar Umar Thalib, etc and the names of groups have not been changed however, his guides names probably have). It starts with him traveling with his guide in May 2000 on an inter-island passenger ferryon his way to the Banda Islands and the Mollucas. On the same ferry was a large group of Laskar Jihad enroute to conduct a Jihad. He describes the climate on the ship and the island themselves. Of course he meets additional friends (and some potential enemies) along the way. After conducting his research of the situation in the Banda/Molluca Islands between the Christians and Moslems in the area he goes back to the U.S. and starts to write his book. Then the Bali Bombing happened and he goes back to Indonesia to see what has changed in the country since. He meets up with his previous guide (and by then friend) who intoduces him to someone else who will assist them in getting inside the Islamic organizations (you find out later he was also a terrorist/freedom fighter depending on your point of view). From there they interview and have general discussions with a range of personnel from a student of a Pesantren that is known for producing Islamic fighters to the head of Islamic organizations. This book gives a very good overview of what was the Islamic/Christian situation situation from 2000 to the end of 2003 in Indonesia and makes some observations from the outside looking in during early 2004. This was a very good and readable book that I enjoyed very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
The book is somewhat dated and events in Indonesia such as the last election there and the recent tsunami have out run the issue of terrorism. Nevertheless, its a great read and rings very true. I have travelled to Indonesia frequently and as messed up as that country is I really love the place. So much so, I married an Indonesian and have close family ties there.I know Jakarta and Jogya and many of the other places described in the book. From my first hand experience I can confirm much of what Mr. Dahlby writes about. He sums up well the central issue: " And suddenly, viscerally, I was more than ever convinced that George Bush had set America on a devastatingly shortsigted path when on September 20, 2001 he'd declared: "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."
