5-0 out of 5 stars This translation echos the real meaning behind these books
I have been studying the various aspects of the "Abrahamic" religions for a few years (Jewish, Christian, Islamic). I am fascinated by the grand debate among them and how it is based on interpretations of millennia old documents translated and retranslated with political intent, gender and social bias.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Five Books Of Moses/ Fox' Version-- Critical Review
Until recently, I was unaware of the competing versions of the Bible by Biblical scholars Dr. Robert Alter and Dr. Everett Fox.Both have authored many books and critical essays about the Bible, culminating with parallel academic versions of The Torah (interestingly, they both chose the title, "The Five Books of Moses."), biography of David's life (both chose to use 1,2 Samuel) and both offered competing translations of Genesis.
5-0 out of 5 stars What's a review if it doesn't review the book?
I happen to be a fan of Everett Fox's amazing translation of the Bible. Like all books there are positive things about it and some things I might have done differently. But the review by Ira Moon is what caused me to write. His so called "review"is a critique of the Bible itself--a critique that he is welcome to have of course; however, he would have that same critique of any edition of any Bible in any translation or the original. This review in no way reflects on Everett Fox's work either positively or negatively.I would hate to see someone not read this wonderful rendition of the Bible because Ira Moon dumped on it his opinions about the Bible in particular and religion in general. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A little misleading
The title of this book is misleading. It should actually be "The Torah with Sources Revealed." Some comments are made on other early history books in the OT, but it is virtually all on the Torah, and mostly consists of a new translation with different sources indicated by color and font. As such it is the most complete treatment of the source theory I have seen, but for a non-expert such as me, the translation could at least use more footnotes. For instance, Exodus 1:15-16 is translated "And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives...and you look at the two stones, if it's a boy...The New Oxford Annotated Bible gives "...and see them on the birthstool, if it's a boy..."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
The short 30-page introduction summarizes very thoroughly the case for the different authors of the Bible and who they are. The rest of the book delineates which of the Penteteuch's passages belong to a each particular author. This allows the ready to quickly identify the source of the passage which is useful when doing other research that references the Penteteuch. R.E. Friedman also suggests that his book allows the reader to read each author as an independent work which allows the reader to get better appreciation of the development of the Bible. I gave it 4 stars for its usefulness as a reference text. R.E. Friedman's book Who Wrote The Bible is a more in-depth study of authorship of the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selfless Leader Serves As Example
Swindoll takes references to Moses from both the Old and New Testaments and weaves them together with observations and reflections into a relational, nonacademic read that gives the reader a grip on not just what Moses did, but on who Moses was as a person--and how he became that person by God's grooming.Through his conversational, anecdotal style, Swindoll invites the reader to personally take note of and apply divine principles as fleshed out by Moses--for ex, total surrender toGod's will and timing, enablement for service, challenges of opposition from without and within, standing alone with God, passing on the baton, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moses and me
Swindoll has done a great job in this series putting YOU in the the sandals of heroes. You may start asking yourself ... "What would Moses Do". I started encouraging Moses ... "Think it through Moses!"; "Moses!, what are you thinking!" as he bumbles along like me. God's Grace prevails. Good bedtime reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book About a Biblical Leader!
Contrary to what the first reveiwer says, I believe "Moses" is excellent and consistent with Swindoll's other titles - warts and all.Indeed, since the Bible does not gloss over a person's sin, then why should books about Biblical characters overlook their flaws? We can learn important lessons from people's failures, specifically:how not to repeat them!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding and inspiring guide
This is more than the usual guide to the holidays. It is written by one of the pre-eminent Jewish thinkers of our time, and therefore rich in insight and wisdom. Rabbi Greenberg's great love of the Jewish tradition and the Jewish people pervades the work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Portable Benjamin
There is much to love about Walter Benjamin. His is a supple, syncretic, synthetic mind, and his prose just sings-even in translation.Because Benjamin roamed about in whole territorities of thought, it's nearly impossible to draw together a representative selection of his essays without overlooking something important. The collection Illuminations is a delgith; Reflections, a kind of companion volume, includes much material that reflects the Benjamin corpus from a non-Illuminations trajectory.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wise and witty, with a keen eye for detail
This collection of Benjamin essays was selected and introduced by Peter Demetz based on an order prepared by Hannah Arendt. It is a companion piece to Illuminations, a siimilar volume prepared and introduced by Arendt in the late sixties. Unlike Illuminations, which focuses on the literary essays Benjamin wrote, Reflections is intended to present a wide variety of subject and style.
5-0 out of 5 stars "A Highly Polished Mind"
Reflections presents for the reader the great range that Benjamin had as a writer, critic and occidentalist. This collection further demonstrates Benjamin's acute awareness of the literatureof his time, as evidenced by his essay on 'Surrealism', which is as fine a reflection on its themes as the manifestos of Andre Breton. Furthermore, his writings and conversations with Bertolt Brecht show Benjamin to be very close to the thinking of the author himself. Also included is his celebrated essay on Karl Kraus,"the Jewish Swift of Vienna". But what I like most about this collection are the amorphisms and autobiographical sketches of 'Marseilles' and 'One-way Street'. In his images of Marseilles Benjamin creates an "exegesis of the city" that is as fine as any poet could offer; spellbinding, acute, and beautiful. As well, his wit and insight into social phenomena is detailed in 'One-Way Street', and also in the piece on Moscow, which lets the western reader experience a rare witnessing of the Russian city in the years after the Revolution in a way that recalls Dziga Vertov. Finally, the inclusion of several pieces of Benjamin's philosophical-theological speculations show that he was a man of great breath and wisedom, and further showcase the wide range of his highly polished mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Learning Jewish Mytical (Kabbalistic) Spiritual Practices
I teach Kabbalah classes and lead a Jewish Renewal women's havurah. (For more information about Jewish Renewal, the newest denomination in Judaism, go to www.aleph.org). I recommend Yitzhak Buxbaum's "Jewish Spiritual Practices" to all of my classes and have put it on their reading lists.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be in every Jewish home
Yitzhak Buxbaum has made a tremendous contribution to the world of Jewish Learning with this book. He collects Hasidic hanagot ( customary practices) and considers the way they can enrich one's spiritual life and practice. He teaches in the work how the religious Jew can in every detail of his life, in every experience transform the ordinary into the sacred. He teaches how the Jew can transform his consciousness to greater ' devekut ' clinging to God.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Compendium
Yitzhak Buxbaum has done a great service in compiling these Jewish spiritual practices from a variety of sources, many of them Chassidic. The book is so helpful and informative in its tone, that it is easy to overlook the amount of research, scholarship, and organization which underlies it.For the Jew wondering how to enhance kavannah, how to make another part of daily life more kodesh, and how to benefit from the particular religious genius of our forebearers, this book will be a welcome, and oft-perused addition to the family library.Synagogues would do well to make this book available to their membership as well. ... This book is FINALLY back in print in the USA and for a very reasonable price! this is part of Eerdman's "Biblical Resource Series". This is well organzied so even thebeginner can easily find information, and covers Nomadism, FamilyInstitutions, Civil Institutions, Military Institutions, and ReligiousInstitutions. An encyclopedia of sorts!Roland de Vaux (1903-1971) wasesteemed both as a biblical historian and as an archaeologist. If you getthis book, you also need to purchase Archaeology of the Land of the Bibleby Amihai Mazar available here. Both will get you moving in the directionof biblical studies.

This is a indepth look at Ancient Israel, but not at all dry.The author has a dry wit and great enthusiasm for his subject.Although he uses alot of Hebrew language references, I was still able to understand his explanations. The author's personal faith in the Christian God is evident and refreshing. He is not out to tear apart the Old Testament, but to help other's better understand the life and times in which it was written. For anyone who has had questions after reading the Old Testament, I highly recommend this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Guide for the Perplexed keeps on showing the way.
Yes, this is a true classic.Though there have been many works written since this jewel was first written, it still shines as a jewel in the crown of the Torah.
3-0 out of 5 stars Another Guide for the Perplexed
Maimonides offers an interesting perspective on the questions of theology. As told in the introduction, Maimonides rose from relative obscurity to a high level of academic merit very quickly due to his clear and distinct understanding and interpretations of the scripture. Indeed, his insights are what this book is all about. It is not an exhaustive study of all of the questions raised in the old testament, nor of other inquiries into the various properties of the divine, but it covers a lot. I found the text to be a little dry; not as captivating as a Platonic dialogue, but not as confusing as, say, one of Aristotle's essays. Were I to do it again, I might reconsider buying this edition because the type is quite small and Maimonides covers a lot of ground in little space, so I found my self using up the margins while trying to keep up with his thoughts. One of the nice things about this edition, however, is that it is in one volume, the entire guide to the perplexed. I found other editions, with larger print and such, but nothing besides this has the complete text. Moreover, it's cheaper than everything else I found! The translation is descent to good. It was done in the late 19th century, so you might say that it's a little dated, but it doesn't effect your reading. I read this book during a college seminar at St. John's, if you were wondering why I would have read this thing in the first palce. Speaking of which, I don't know if I'll ever really read this book again. This may be an important point, because while owning a book means you can do with it as you please, if you don't read it again, then it's just dead weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult and Perplexing Work
An excellent work by a late medieval Jewish theologian/metaphysicist(a contemporary of Aquinas) who presents and breaks down the metaphysical arguments of the day for the existence of God, a God-created universe, and the interpretation of the Torah in regard to these topics. He examines the Aristotelian arguments supporting the eternal existence of the Universe and determines whether or not they are supported by Scripture and logical analysis. Our contemporary physicists could use his methods to uncover logical flaws in their theories about the ultimate origins of the Universe. He finishes the text with a treatise on Scripture and the perfection of Man. A must read along with the works of Augustine and Aquinas, and for that matter, any modern work on the ultimate nature of Nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Wherever we let God in"
The general assumption of people of the modern era has been that we must look for and search for and wait for God. The image is of Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot'. God has disappeared and is not part of our lives and we have to wait for God to return. Or if we are real searchers we would not wait, but would make the effort ourselves looking in various aspects of our experience to find the ultimate religious meaning.
2-0 out of 5 stars Different strokes for different folks
I think Heschel revealed a lot of himself in his works--more than other writers, perhaps. He seems to me to be very emotional regarding his opinions and beliefs. He came from an Eastern European Hasidic family whose ancestor was the Great Maggid of Mezerich. He was a leader in the Civil Rights movement as well as the Vietnam anti-war movement. He was on the faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary, JTS, (of the Jewish Conservative movement). This is rather humorous, I think, since he was obviously quite the idealistic Liberal. He had a reputation as a mystic, causing him conflict with other JTS professors. He was a very forceful personality.IMHO he was very much a literary expressionist--putting his feelings into writing. He was also quite poetic--his books include many clever and beautiful turns of phrase. However, much of what he writes comes off as if they are sermons, as if he KNOWS.I respect his views, but don't often agree with them. This book doesn't read like philosophy to me (you can read "Between Kant and Kabbalah" by Mittleman on the Jewish philosopher Breuer, for example). As a scientist, I object to anyone dismissing the contributions of science in virtually any arena.Certainly psychology is a player in anything involving humans. As a mystic, I certainly agree that the Divine is ineffable. But people translate their contact with the Divine into human terms--mostly reflecting their individual propensities, biases, views, etc. That secondary process is psychological/scientific.Indeed, such communications have been compared to radio and television with a transmitter and receivers.Furthermore, research into ESP (Dr. Rhine etc.) shows considerable applicability in understanding the processes involved in communicating with higher powers (e.g. God).In addition, Heschel insists that the Bible be understood in terms of Biblical people.Certainly, such an approach can provide an historical or hagiographical context for the causes that produced beliefs and documents (e.g. The Torah). But, it is essentially irrelevant to today's individuals attempting to apply such beliefs and documents into their lives. It is obvious that praying, studying Torah, putting on Tefillin, etc. excites and completes Heschel, but that doesn't mean they do for everyone--and certainly not identically. He makes the common human mistake of assuming everyone is like him (or should be).I humbly disagree.Nevertheless, he did provide a differing point of view to be considered as well as a couple of good quotes for my collection.:

When I was still interested in Orthodox Judaism I found Heschl's book to be very refreshing because it offered a perspective on Judaism that seemed to be more based on reason and argumentation than many of the views fellow members of my synagogue were expounding to me.However, since then I've fallen away from the religion. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't read an argument in favor of God's existence but it does mean I view such arguments with a certain skepticism and emotional revulsion. This book fails to overcome that revulsion; it presents a one-sided, a-historical view of the Jewish faith centering on the so-called concrete event of revelation; it generally distorts common views and rejections of the Bible and for the large part ignores one of the most pressing issues for atheists today -- Biblical criticism, archaeological evidence, and the intolerance and close-mindedness of the religious outlook. This book claims to be a cogent argument for faith, but it's really just bad philosophy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ess, ess, mein kindt!
News flash! Not everybody's chicken soup is the way your bubbe used to make! This is a great cookbook, filled with recipes from all over America, of Sephardic and Ashkenazic origin, influenced by where people settled. Gefilte fish is made with whitefish, salmon, haddock or shad, depending on what fish swims in the ocean, lake or river near by. There are latkes with zucchini and chili in Arizona and curried sweet potatoes in Flatbush.

The receipes are functional, even if you are not a gourmet chef. But the stories behind them are just fun to read!A taste--for the mind and tongue--of what life was like for some of our ancestors. I recommend the story of the orange, and the recipe for cranberry applesauce! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excels, Despite It's Cultural and Dated Prejudice
What others below this review have stated regarding cultural bias and archaic science is true. However, we should always wear our ethno-culturocentric colored glasses when reading anything over fifty years old. Dion Fortune is an excellent writer, nonetheless, and her numbered paragraphs system makes each paragraph worth digesting on its own. Compare her writing to MacGregor Mather's "Kabbalah Unveiled" or the pedantic A.E. Waite's "Holy Kabbalah"...is it their Kabbalah that is difficult, or is it their language that makes them unnecessarily difficult reads? Ditto the reviewer who said this book has changed the way she approaches her study of Qabalah. The Mystical Qabalah is pleasurable and prerequisite. Another practical companion, a close second in readability would be Will Parfit's little primer, "The Elements of the Qabalah".
4-0 out of 5 stars Great, Classic but Difficult to Read and Archaic
This book is a classic work on the magical qabalah which is a must-read for all students of Western Mystery Magick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Dennis Prager is emerging as one of the single most insightful and important conservative thinkers in the country. His analysis of Jew-hatred is by far and away the best organized, comprehensive, and compelling account I have ever seen.In an age in which Islamic radicalism seeks to kill the Jews all over again, Prager's book couldn't be more timely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best explanation of anti-Jewish sentiment
I won't give up my copy of "Why the Jews..." but I have purchased copies for other people. You might think you know the reasons for anti-Jewish sentiment, but you need to read this book to know for certain. If you believe that you understand the conflict surrounding the Zionists, you need to read "Why the Jews..." to be sure. The age-old mistrust of the Jews, the reasons the Muslim and Semitic attacks on the Jews is all explained in this thought-provoking and well-written book. ...
