Storming the kingdom
Some academic works read like bad novels (Crossan's books and Chilton's "Rabbi Jesus" come to mind), but this one reads like a good novel, engaging the reader from start to finish. It describes first-century Palestine as a hotbed of apocalyptic protest resulting from escalating tenancy, debt, and taxation, where Galilee was especially rough going. Prophets like John the Baptist and Jesus of Nazareth were fiercely political, their movements aimed at restoring Israel and its traditional Torah values against the imperial ideology of Rome. Somewhat like Herzog (in "Jesus, Justice, and the Reign of God"), Horsley and Silberman argue that Jesus' dictum, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's", was a veiled way of saying that everything belonged to God.
Finally!
Professor Horsley has repeatedly offered us books impeccably researched and annotated in great detail.Yet despite the promise of those works, Horsley has too often hidden his gifts behind an impenetrable wall of technicalities and minutia.In his attempts to demonstrate his intelligence, Horsley has sometimes made his writing obtuse and inaccessible to the average reader. THAT'S MY FAMILY!
Hey, who ever wrote this book included some of my family photos. The farhoumand family or in the book "farhumand" is mine and i am proud to say we are the only ones because my grandfather made it up. he is the one with the cross-eyes as a little boy. Um.. yah my mom's side of the family is also in there "azizi." Anyways. I am not jewish, my family history is though. Now my family is Bahai, which is not a sect of islam. Yah... so thats cool! YAY I AM FAMOUS!

a true and wonderful contribution
As a first generation Jewish-Iranian immigrant to the States, I want to thank Houman Sarshar and those who put together this work.My entire family has been unable to put this incredible volume down for the past three days!It is the only documentary I know that so beautifully, authentically, and fully details the history, lives, and images of Iranian Jews.

Profound and beautiful
Viewed from afar, Jerusalem is the city that best captures the spirit of modern Israel.But as Barbara Mann shows in this profound and beautiful book, it is in Tel Aviv - the first modern Jewish city -- that the complexities of the Zionist project are most evident.Mann describes these complexities in both broad strokes (as when she presents the long ambivalent history of Jewish attitudes towards space and place) and fine detail (as when she describes the old cemetery in the middle of Tel Aviv, and how its meaning has changed over the generations).Mann is a Berkeley-trained literature professor, so she's conversant in the sorts of contemporary theory that one encounters at universities.She carries her erudition lightly, though, using the tools of cultural studies and literary theory to explain what she sees, without getting carried into the jargony hermeticism that makes much academic writing insufferable and impenetrable. This could be because Mann is also an accomplished poet.Time and again she finds a perfect, small example that illustrate her big points, and these images stick with you after you've closed the book.She writes simply and beautifully, with pathos and with power.

An outstanding study
Jack Wertheimer has been for years one of the most thoughtful and concerned writers about the condition of American Jewry. His understanding of the polarization in the community, and the damage done to by assimilation is based on his strong adherence to Jewish religious tradition. The fact however that one diagnoses correctly a certain problem does not mean that one can provide a solution. Wertheimer has at times suggested that instead of worrying about those Jews who show little concern about the tradition, the community direct its resources to strengthening those that do.
Excellent Discussion of Current State of American Judaism
Though currently JEW V. JEW is receiving all the attention in the press, Jack Wertheimer's A PEOPLE DIVIDED is probably a better account of the state of American Jewry today. A great history book;ignore the hatchet Kirkus review
In all respects, this is a wonderful study of American Jews.I urge people to study this volume carefully - and to ignore the hatchet book review from Kirkus.That review falsely claims that his study is "anchored in the 40's and 50's--boom years for the Conservative movement--there's a strong tilt toward his own denomination."This is wrong, and one wonders if they actually read the book. They also claim that "he fails to credit theReform for initiating a Judaism for nonpracticing American Jews", which is the opposite of what Prof. Wertheimer writes.The biased Krikus review falsely claims that "he should have made the point that traditional Judaism is unchanged since the days of the Pharisees."This is nothing less than religious fundamentalism and propaganda, more suited to right wing Jewish or Christian fundamentalist tracts.Orthodox Judaism has changed a great deal since Pharasaic times, and indeed has changed very much since the 1600s, when halakhic change nearly came to an end after the publication of the Shulkhan Aruhkh.I urge any interested reader to obtain unbiased historical studies of the development of Judaism and Jewish law, such as works by Mendell Lewittes and Menachem Elon, who are respected in all quarters.Although they are Orthodox Jews, they are also objective historians.The rest of the Kirkus review on Prof. Wertheimer's fine book follows in the same angry (and factually wrong) tone, which betrays either a fanatic mindset or total ignorance of history."A People Divided" is not a book for those who wish to deny history or objective facts, but rather is an objective study of the great challenges facing the American Jewish community today;As such it is directed towards those of any religious (or secular) background who have an open mind as well as a basic education. ... Excellent Historical Resource
Hester's book is fortunately back in print.It was written for college students and is an excellent resource.It is not an exhaustive text - many times the author states the disclaimer that a topic is too involved to go into in detail, but this is not a serious drawback.Certainly the map quality is adequate but modern maps are a significant improvement.The coverage of the archaeology of the area is entertaining and rich in information.For the reader desiring to learn the history of the Hebrew people during this time period, this book is a good buy. ...
