5-0 out of 5 stars It's a FAKE BOOK
The other reviewer (Rob) clearly doesn't understand the concept of a fake book. This book, as he said, has the lyrics, guitar chords and melody line--that's the definition of a "fake book"--fake books are designed for you to improv. They are not supposed to have full orchestrations or harmony lines. The whole term "fake book" comes from the old saying, "If you hum a few bars I can fake it." Most praise bands and worship teams use either this kind of "fake sheet" or they use "charts," which don't even include the melody line--just the lyrics with the chord changes above them.
2-0 out of 5 stars One Major Omission
First of all this book has a great collection of songs. It has hard to find, almost forgotten gems from the 70's by Keith Green, The Imperials (remember them?), Larry Norman, Debby Boone (!), Andrae Crouch, etc,. It also has modern songs from Mac Powell (Third Day), Sixpence..., Jars of Clay, DC Talk, Delirious, etc. And it has everything in between like Petra, DeGarmo and Key, Amy Grant, Michael W Smith, Sandi Patty, etc.,

5-0 out of 5 stars The masters do it again!
I had the pleasure of participating in a workshop with David Willcocks, and received this book as part of it.It was first published in 1987, but Sir David had some amusing anecdotes to share about how he and John Rutter, another name to reckon with in choral music circles, put it together.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource for established choirs
This book is a wonderful source for any established choir. The multi-part harmonies are arranged in a unique and expressive way. The song selectionsrange from old latin (Quem Pastores Laudavere), to religious (It came upona midnight clear), and even encludes variations of Jingle Bells and Deckthe Halls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carols for Choir is the most beautiful music

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical properties of music and words
This valuable book is divided in two parts. The first is The Secret Power of The Word, in which the author discusses the science of sacred sound with reference to its principle of resonance (sympathetic vibration), the principles of rhythm, melody and harmony, plus qualities like pitch and timbre. The scales and the healing elements of music are investigated - the section on the musical interplay with the charkas is particularly enlightening. Other fascinating sections are The Occult Significance of Speech and Mystical Words of Power which deals with ritual words and sounds like the Hebrew God-names plus Sanskrit Mantras and chants. 3-0 out of 5 stars Universal Language of Music
This is the first book I've seen that links music, sound, and spoken word to chakras and healing centers in the body. Just as chakras respond to certain thoughts, and colors, the vibration of certain notes resonate tocorresponding chakras. The right combination of sound and tone can be usedto aid in spiritual healing. Ted Andrews describes a fascinating history ofstorytelling and music throughout time, the importance of maintaining oraland musical traditions. Sacred Sounds also covers the important power ofwords, and what actions they can create. This is a great and informativehandbook on music and healing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightenment through Music
The challenging part about reading a book by an enlightened being is that the author is writing from an experience of consciousness (non-duality) that is impossible for the ego (duality) to comprehend. However, Hazrat Inayat Khan's writing is easily understood and could be valuable to both spiritual aspirants on the path to enlightenment and/or musicians looking for deeper levels in their artistry. This is a book to be studied, not just read.In it are keys to understanding the mysticism of sound, music, color, words, and silence.

5-0 out of 5 stars The wave-like aspect of Life, not just about music
Other reviewers already dealt with the music side of the book, so i won't elaborate on that. There is in addition the purely sound-related aspect of reality. All words, thoughts, and emotions, carry on some power due to their vibratory nature. Everything, whatever it is can be seen as a wave. So don't think it is just about what you hear. All there is can be described in that way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Vibrations
This book is a compilation of the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan, a Sufi mystic from the early part of the Twentieth century.Born in India, Khan was thoroughly familiar with both Hindu beliefs and Islam and he also knew Christian scriptures well.In this book, Khan explains the central tenets of his Sufi sect.He begins with the belief that vibration is the ultimate connection to God, and states that this belief is found in Christian, Muslim, and Hindu scriptures by reading "word" as sound, and sound as vibration. All else flows from this.Khan finds spiritual direction through seeking harmony with all and finding and matching the appropriate rhythm of things.Music, (of the serious type, not jazz, for instance) provides a means of worship and union with the Almighty. But the highest form of sound is abstract, a topic whose details are reserved for Sufi initiates because others might misuse such knowledge.

The only reason I ordered this book is because I am a member of a local choir and ordered it as it is in the choir's repertoire and contains a wide spread of Church Choral Music for SATB voices.I prefer to have my own copy rather than a library one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Standard

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible archive and reference
There have been many Songbooks of Jewish music compiled by a variety of organizations over the last 40 years - all for a specific purpose. This collection however is unique in that in its 400+ pages it provides the lyrics (or texts with sources), music notation and guitar chords of nearly every song taught by camp and Temple songleaders between 1965 and 2000. It is nothing less than an archive of the Jewish music of a generation (or two). The important works of contemporary composers (Friedman, Klepper, Isaacson, Dropkin, Freedlander, etc.) are scored here along with traditional folk tunes, Chassidic nigunim and popular Israeli music. The 350 collected songs are indexed by text source and by composer. Hebrew songs feature transliterated lyrics in the score and hebrew text with translation below. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written and a Must for Fans!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book since I am an Indigo Girls fan-particularly of Emily's song writing. This book is about tolerance of all music and how it affects just about all that we do. It talks about some of the stories behind Emily's song lyrics which I find fascinating, but also gives a great history behind many of the hymns that her father plays in their church. I would have liked to have seen Emily mention her mother and her impact on her song writing, but overall...the language and the ideas expressed in this book are beautiful and wonderful. I was sent this book as a gift, and it truly was. What a delightful treat to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting
Can't get that song out of your head?Neither can they.In their new book "A Song to Sing, A Life to Live"Don Saliers, renowned professor of theology at Emory, and his daughter Emily Saliers, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter of the Indigo Girls, sing in harmony the praises of music and its connection to the soul. They remind us that it is music which generates the vibrating strings of energy connecting us to all living things.Their discussions of how music helps to shape us by connecting us to memories, people, places, and the Divine Source is both uplifting and inspirational. Both Don and Emily provide insights into how music has inspired them and directed their lives not only on a path of self-discovery, but a path of discovering the world around them; a world made visible only through music. This book will make you stop and look at the music you enjoy in a different light.I was deeply moved by the story of a young girl, Sarah, on her death bed waiting to hear Emily, and Indigo Girls partner Amy Ray, sing Emily's "Southland in the Springtime"; dying only hours after the duo finished their song.It made me question why even in death we long to fill our soul with our favorite music, but as Don and Emily point out, the cycle of life moves to music. They remind us that we cannot escape the rhythms with which daily life moves; whether it is the bustle of traffic, the roar of the ocean, or the singing of the birds. Our own bodies would not exist without the heart's intricate beating and the exact rhythm of our breathing. In essence, we are born in rhythm and die in song.I highly recommend this book as a primer in understanding the connection between music and the soul. This book is enlightening, uplifting, and fun.As an added bonus you'll also be treated to the personal stories and anecdotes of Don and Emily's encounters with music.Thank you Don and Emily for your courage and openness.Rock on! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Treasure of Solesmes
"The Restoration of Gregorian Chant" is a multicultural icon, an illuminare moving us through a hall of ecclesiastical mirrors with distant echoes of the Spirit in sound, a labyrinthian caravan of chant development, restoration, and documentation; a historical exploration laden with intrigues, opinions, Episcopal approvals, memorandums, circulars, Congresses, verbatims, Vatican Commissions, copyrights, and Pontifical documents.Dom Combe's compelling sense of purpose, is an incredible window of reason and energy, an oeuvre that clearly resonates the immortal Gregorian Chant, reconnecting us with the pioneering efforts of the House of Solesmes and the power of the Divine. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Spirituals Edited by Moses Hogan
The Oxford choral collections are all excellent. This one, issued shortly before Moses Hogan's death, is no exception.Hogan selected 28 spirituals covering the twentieth century from 1914 through 2001.The best selection, in my opinion, is "Fix Me Jesus" by Hall Johnson from 1955.The volume is marred by typos, such as missing or incorrect words, that are a distraction; otherwise, it would rate five stars. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal, verifiable and still-underrated discovery
The original French edition of this book, LA MUSIQUE DE LA BIBLE REVELEE, was published in 1976, along with a recording of the same title (likewise sold by Amazon.com as "The Music of the Bible Revealed"). The second edition (of which this book is a translation) appeared in 1978. I didn't encounter Mme. Haik-Vantoura's work, however, until 1982, when the Associates for Biblical Research Newsletter announced it. Since then, I have been the Corresponding Agent in the U.S. for Haik-Vantoura's Institution Roi David. 5-0 out of 5 stars State of Bliss!
Searching for other Jai Uttal music I stumbled upon this CD and after sampling just two of the tracks I quickly purchased it. I can say after recieving it I was not disappointed! The layers of harmony, space, and sound combine to leave the listener searching within and in a state of reconnected peace. All music should be this good. Track #5 bija mantras, if listened to while watching the rising sun in the morning will give you a feeling of understanding, awe, and peace. All the tracks leave me speechless and are great for meditation, yoga, relaxation, massage and reconnecting the soul to the divine. A true must have CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loveland is the place to be
I am admittedly a huge fan of Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach - I have quite a few of their cd's and enjoy using them in yoga classes or when I want to chill out.So, of course, I was excited with this new offering.
