4-0 out of 5 stars Good Common-Sense Approach To Adversity
Rabbi Kushner's new book, "Overcoming Life's Disappointments" is a good friend to have if you've got some adversity in your life.He takes Moses, who spent 40 years wandering in the desert with his people and then was forbidden to enter the promised land with them, as his model on how a good person copes with trials. His advice is that life continues to have good things in store for us even after our dreams are shattered, if we don't let ourselves become hardened and embittered but keep our minds and hearts open. This sounds obvious enough, but it's easier said than done.Rabbi Kushner provides many stories from his long career to explain how we can cope.As a self-confessed admirer of Sigmund Freud, he's not big on the mystical or intuitive aspects of religion. He's more of a "duty is its own reward" kind of guy.But he is a preacher of what C.S. Lewis called "the Tao": the basic "way" that most religions have in common. If you are looking for essential answers, Rabbi Kushner is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rabbi Kushner gives a few pointers in resiliency
One of the hardest things for anyone to learn, no matter where you are in life, or how much money you have, is coping with times when things don't turn out as you expect. Some people never recover, while others seem to sail past a disaster with hardly a break in stride. The trick isn't in what the disaster is, but how they've handled it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is written for the middle school ag.. hence the reason that the slang is so far off... (as noted in the previous reveiw) It is a great book about becoming a modern day Esther.

4-0 out of 5 stars Esther 101
Esther's story is my favorite story in the Bible. She was a very strong woman who was fearless (she was not afriad to be herself). Lisa Ryan has done a great job applying this fabulous story to life as a young woman today. I found that the writing was somewhat silly (Mrs. Ryan sometimes used slang never spoken by anyone outside of middle school), but the message was awesome. Every girl should read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give it 10 stars?
AWESTRUCK is the only word to describe my reaction to this magnificently beautiful book!It is a huge collection of Poortvliet's master quality artwork in a stunning coffee table book. The thoughtfully executed art gives evidence of the artist's heart toward the subject matter. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an absolute masterpiece!
The genius and breathtaking artistry of Rien Poortvliet are beautifully displayed on every page of this wonderful book.Strong faith and great love for the subject matter are apparent from start to finish. As a believer, I can only describe it as a striking affirmation of the Genesis story, and the author's obvious familiarity with animals brings the account to life in ways that never occurred to me before. What a heartfelt portrait of Noah and his family and their experiences with all those extraordinary animals as they rode out the flood together! This can really be considered as a supplement to the Bible story, because it neither takes away from the content revealed in scripture nor presumes to add any superlative events not supported or implied by the text.Delightfully, it adds a dimension of intimate realism to the whole of the flood account and a sense of reverent awe to the depth of the beauty inherent in God's creatures. It reminds us that they as well as we are "fearfully and wonderfully made."

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes one want to become an environmentalist
This man should be knighted. His work is good for the soul. In a world that runs roughshod over its natural resources, heedless of the consequences, Poortvliet makes an eloquent plea to the world to conserve its marvelous treasures. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Diversion
This is just one of many Inspirational Study Guides written by Max Lucado. After reading/working through this book I felt confident enough to purchase more of them.If your time in God's word is not what you would like it to be, then maybe a brief interlude into this book will help get you going. One of the better points is that the book does not try to push a lot of the authors theology onto you.The book helps you read through the book of romans, examine a few sections closely (it even gives two version of the bible), some inspirational stories, as well as question for thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard Sayings of Paul
This is a fun book for any Bible student especially a student of Paul's writings. Brauch does an excellent job of exegesis.

4-0 out of 5 stars A well-ordered compilation of the apostle's tough words.
This is a good resource by a fine Bible teacher, touching on those quite difficult statements of the Apostle Paul. Each of the 48 chapters feature a different statement, such as "Handing Over to Satan" and "NoWomen Teachers." I found the author to be insightful and helpful. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bible Women Come To Life
I really enjoyed the characters in Sarah Laughed and some of these women are real characters!I like the format of each chapter beginning with the scripture reference, followed by a partially hypothetical story, then a personal account by the author and finally suggestions for real life. These womens' situations in life are not that different from our own.Very enjoyable and informative reading. As ususal Ms. Ochs has managed to bring reality to our spirituality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Most of the stories in this book are about women being strong and independent. Eve, Miriam, even the Woman of Valor, the impossibly perfect woman. Then I got to the story of Esther. Instead of telling how she hid her identity and saved her people from destruction, Ochs has chosen to tell the tale of how she became the queen because of her beauty. I get that her point was that Esther had the ability to reflect the beauty of others, which is an admirable trait. But if Ochs wanted to depict a strong woman, she should have chosen a better part of Esther's tale. Instead, we're shown how beauty can get you everywhere. How about a trip to 2005, Ms. Ochs?

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely, Full of Comfort and Learned Wisdom
Vanessa Ochs has written a lovely book in which she fleshes out the stories of Old Testament women - stories that, very often, are short on detail and leave us with more questions than answers. In the process of filling in the gaps with imaginative and meditative narratives, Ochs supplies ideas on how modern women may use the lessons of our Old Testament forebearers to ease our souls, bodies and minds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finely detailed illustrations with beautiful color
The illustrations of this over-sized children's picture book are almost overwhelming due to the detail of the fine point ink drawings. The tiny strokes that make up the Egyptian hieroglyphics, the plant leaves, and the wall decorations are unbelievable. Great care and thought was given to both the drawings and the painting. The painting of the background of the pages and of the skies contain beautiful combinations of color. 4-0 out of 5 stars A visually appealing introduction to the biblical account!
Award-winning children's book illustrator, Brian Wildsmith, lends his pen and water colors to the well-known and beloved story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. As would be expected from Wildsmith, these illustrations of Egyptian palaces, hieroglyphics and royalty in full regalia are a feast to behold. By comparison, Joseph's nomadic sheepherding father, Jacob, and Joseph's treacherous brothers live rather humble lives in the desert.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Catholic Introduction to the Psalms in Print!
At least in English, this book is in undoubtedly the best introduction to the Book of Psalms presently in print. It is written by a Catholic biblical scholar who is on fire for the Word of God and wants to get that Word out. But this book is much more than just an introduction to the Psalms. It is an introduction to the theology of the entire Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Review by the Rev. Fr. Johann W. Vanderbijl III
Despite the corny title and equally corny headings from time to time, the book delivers more than its title reveals. The rather lengthy introduction by Scott Hahn (an ex-Presbyterian and fairly recent convert to Roman Catholicism) sets the tone for the rest of the book.Old Testament symbolism provides the backdrop for the further development of the Davidic Covenant theme proposed by the author for the reading of the Psalms.Much of this type of work has been covered by lesser-known authors such as James Jordan (especially in his book "Through New Eyes", Wolgemuth & Hyatt Publishers, Brentwood TN, 1988) and Peter Leithart (both Presbyterians), whom the author quotes a few times.

5-0 out of 5 stars The scoffer is wrong
With his heavenly gifts, Henry Morris has offered much to the modern Biblical discussion, and this book is no exception.Christians like the reviewer below seem to be in the middle of a tug of war between so-called science and Christianity - they believe that modern science is completely accurate and therefore must find a way for it to be synronized with the Biblical record. The claim seen in this misguided reviewer's comments that the big bang is in line with the Genesis record of creation "ex nihilo" (out of nothing) shows a misunderstanding of both the Bible and the big bang theory. There isn't a single big bang theorist on earth who believes that the universe erupted out of nothing; rather, the theory dictates that it would have been erupted from a small dot of unimaginably large mass.Mass is something, not nothing. There is nothing in the Bible that would indicate that we should interpret the creation account in any way but a literal sense. As other reviewers have pointed out, the Bible contains a variety of prose with obvious interpretations of each; though some is symbolism that must be deciphered, all is fact and divinely inspired.

4-0 out of 5 stars Did you READ it??
I have to wonder sometimes if a few of these reviews are written before having read the book.Nowhere does Henry Morris in any of his writings suggest that every statement in the Bible is to be taken literally.Creationists acknowledge that the Bible is made up of many different types of literature (narrative, poetry, etc.)What they teach is that the Bible should be taken as written, period. If a passage is a narrative passage, we should take it as fact.If it is poetic or symbolic we should take it as that and understand what the symbolism means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Response "reader from Boston"
The "reader from boston" writing the first review of this book needs to be slapped around like a traitor. All Morris is doing is giving the scientific realities of stories in Scripture.About the days of creation, well, anyone who has read the account and has any form of knowledge in their head will know that the creation days are literal days (evening and morning were the first day). Now, I agree that the Bible is not to be taken literally in every word in every passage but that does not mean that it sometimes can be taken literally and is meant to be taken literally. Why would Moses want to communicate anything different or confusing to the people by saying "days" which the Hebrew word means "24 hour day"Before you start criticizing true biblical scholars, you might want to get an education. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Read!
This book is nothing less than phenomenal. For several years of my life I was brainwashed with the cultic ideology that Genesis has to say the earth is young, despite all the science I knew to the contrary. Fortunately, I saw my way out of that darkness and into the realization of progressive creationism. I only wish I had this book earlier. It does a marvelous job of showing the truth, and de-cluttering Genesis and the encumberment caused by literalists who refuse to look into the Hebrew behind those english translations. The science, the facts and evidence, and the theology are all fantastic. A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Young Earth creationists are getting nervous!!!!!!
I'm new to believing in the old earth creationism. I became a believer reading Hugh Ross' book, Creation and Time.I agree with his work.I think young earth creationists need to understand that scientific evidence shows the earth to much older. Also, I was a young earth creationist and I know that this believing in an old earth is more acceptable than six literal days. I also feel that young earth creationists are closed-minded and not really opening up to other facts. When I was a young earth creationistI had a hard time with trying to prove that a worldwide flood happened. I always went to Answers in Genesis or ICR for my answers. I feel that their information is making claims to the possiblity than looking actually looking for the truth. Like for example, it is believed by young earth creationists that a worldwide flood happened. But the worldwide flood would have destroyed the plants. The Archaeological Study Bible says, "Physical arguments have been raised againsts a universal flood: origin and disposal of the amount of water necessary to form a layer six miles (ten km) thick over the whole world; the effect on plant life of being covered for a year; the effect on fresh water life of a sea that contained salt from the ocean; and the fact that many topographical features of the earth (such as cinder cones) show no evidence of erosion of erosion by a flood and are thought to be much more ancient than the flood could possibly have been." The reason I titled this review is because young earth creationists are getting nervous. I got nervous. I looked at Hugh Ross' work and now I'm a believer. Wow, the nervousness is gone. I will close by saying to young earth creationists, "Be open-minded!" I also want to say to young creationists need to take at a look at what others have to say about the worldwide flood and also to make an effort to have a good response to the problems. [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars if you're even remotely interested in truth (and science)...
you need to read this book! i read the entire thing in 1 day.. it was that good.. i found it to be worth my time that i could have been using to stare at my physics study sheet for my final the next day.. yea.. it was really good and really helpful.. i am so glad to now have more foundation in knowledge.. so that i can be a better apologist when it comes to science and reason.. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SUB ROSA
Ginzberg has, in these volumes, assembled & organized a massive selection of Rabbinic texts that might not otherwise have been open to public scrutiny/appreciation. You'll recognize the stories from sunday school perhaps, but the details are much more esoteric than what you're used to. These were passed down in an oral tradition in whichthose transmitting the knowledge were sworn to an oath not to change so much as "a single iota". They didn't, & the result is as bizarre as it is symbolic & fascinating. Not a Christian or a Jew? No matter. These volumes will be of interest to all who consider themselves mystics. PURE GOLD. ...
