2-0 out of 5 stars About 100 years behind the times
We used this as a textbook in Old Testament Survey at Belmont - I suspect largely because the author had just retired from a professorship there. The book is well written, and accessible, but not particulary useful.4-0 out of 5 stars A simple straightforward history of the Hebrews
The Story of Israel is one of the textbooks for the Old Testament Surveycourse I teach at the community college.Because background information isessential to understanding the environment into which these people came(though VERY unpopular to students!), Dr. Tullock writes a brief butinformative section on background. It is long enough to set the stage, butshort enough to keep the students interested in the course. In an effortto keep the book short, Dr. Tullock does not cover everything, but does agreat job overviewing and explaining the important spots.I am pleasedwith this book and plan to continue using it for the courses I teach. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Oustanding Contribution. . .
. . .to the Anchor Bible series and to serious study of Amos.I have been more than impressed with the Anchor Bible commentaries on the Minor Prophets and have included several, including this one, in a current class I'm teaching in the Minor Prophets.Of all these texts, Amos stands out as a masterpiece of modern, sensible Biblical scholarship.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Mission of Gender Reconciliation
After reading this text I came to the conclusion that Song of Songs is *the* most missiological book in the Old Testament. Pope translates the text directly, free of the normal curtailing of language that occurs in English translations in order to protect pseudo-Puritan American sensibilities. As such it is a much more moving, poetic, and graphic collection of poems. "My lover thrust his "hand" through the "hole", and my inwards seethed for him." The description of part of the man is not "slabs of ivory", but "an ivory tusk". In this focus on being more true to the original text Pope reveals some key aspects of the Hebrew mindset which we could all learn from. Far from the traditional Christian perspective of these latter days of downplaying sexuality, of thinking it as somehow unclean though never saying so outright, God's desire is for us to revel in it and celebrate it. He created us as holistic beings, the only true amphibians, being both spiritual and physical, and thus capable of enjoying what he created to a much greater degree. The author of Song of Songs revealed years before contemporary psychology that sexuality is an integral part of eros love, not to be denied, but celebrated.
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding reference
I have been working on a research paper on the Song of Songs and feel extremely fortunate to have found Pope's reference. It is exhaustive, interesting and helpful. The most amazing section is his bibliography andlist of translations of publications on the Song of Songs, dating back toancient manuscripts. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any serious research on the Song!
Pope's work is the standard by which all commentaries on the Song of Songs are judged. While the work is huge, bulky and a bit intimidating, its extensive discussion is the best reference one can find on every (and I do mean EVERY) aspect of the Song. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This translation echos the real meaning behind these books
I have been studying the various aspects of the "Abrahamic" religions for a few years (Jewish, Christian, Islamic). I am fascinated by the grand debate among them and how it is based on interpretations of millennia old documents translated and retranslated with political intent, gender and social bias.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Five Books Of Moses/ Fox' Version-- Critical Review
Until recently, I was unaware of the competing versions of the Bible by Biblical scholars Dr. Robert Alter and Dr. Everett Fox.Both have authored many books and critical essays about the Bible, culminating with parallel academic versions of The Torah (interestingly, they both chose the title, "The Five Books of Moses."), biography of David's life (both chose to use 1,2 Samuel) and both offered competing translations of Genesis.
5-0 out of 5 stars What's a review if it doesn't review the book?
I happen to be a fan of Everett Fox's amazing translation of the Bible. Like all books there are positive things about it and some things I might have done differently. But the review by Ira Moon is what caused me to write. His so called "review"is a critique of the Bible itself--a critique that he is welcome to have of course; however, he would have that same critique of any edition of any Bible in any translation or the original. This review in no way reflects on Everett Fox's work either positively or negatively.I would hate to see someone not read this wonderful rendition of the Bible because Ira Moon dumped on it his opinions about the Bible in particular and religion in general. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More satisfying than Warren's 'Purpose Driven Life'
Right off the bat I want to agree with the Minister in Colorado who stated that this book was more satisfying than "Purpose Driven Life". I too was somewhat disappointed by that book, although I do like it on some things.

5-0 out of 5 stars "If you want to give a college graduate only one book...."
I gave this book to a college graduate after ordering a copy for myself. When I first saw the title, I thought the book was just about the troubles Joseph had in Egypt. Though it is one of my favorite bible stories, I wasn't sure I wanted to read all about his troubles. Boy was I surprised.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Respectable Translation
For years, translations of the collection of writings known as the Old Testament have been problematic. Some are made from the Masoretic text, others from the Septuagint, still others from combinations of the two.Recently, some have even been produced using only various Englishtranslations which were simply sifted together. Most often, the readernever knows what was used or where a text differed from another. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Putting Sutherland on Trial
Sutherland argues that legal distinction between causal responsibility for evil and moral blameworthiness for evil is at the heart of a Hegelian theodicy in the Book of Job, where God's authorship of evil may be excusable on the grounds that it is necessary for the production of a higher good. I found this approach new and innovative. It is significant improvement on the traditional Augustian theodicy which draws heavily on the Book of Genesis and blames man for all the natural and moral evils in the world. The connection between human sin and natural evils just isn't there. It is a significant improvement on the tradional Irenean theodicy which draws heavily on the Epistles of Paul and views everyting as a means to character development.Job is just not in need of character development. And the evils he suffers are just too excessive for any normal character improvement.5-0 out of 5 stars Putting Sutherland on Trial
I really enjoyed this book.It was fascinating bedtime reading. It opened up the Bible in ways in never imagined possible and deepened by faith in God.I shared it with my next door neighbour who has cancer, and he found very stimulating and helpful in his journey. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes a few dubious assumptions, but sets up a very plausible scenario.
This is quite possibly the most thorough, critical investigation of the figure of David ever done, and comes to the same conclusion regarding the extent of David's territory that I had arrived at based on what I've read of the archaeological material- roughly, that David ruled "from Dan to Beersheba," and no more than that.Typical reconstructions that give David and Solomon control up to the Euphrates, or even to the southern border of Hamath, base their borders on later 7th century Judean traditions and not on the relatively early material preserved in the books of Samuel.Halpern uses linguistic, epigraphic, and other elements to separate early material from late, and shows that the earliest material does not give David territory touching Damascus, let alone the Euphrates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Revisionist history?
Some see David as a mythological figure. Certainly the image projected of him and the shadow this character casts over subsequent Israelite and biblical history is one of mythic proportions. Partly the constructs around David have become so strangely skewed that one asks the question, as the literature both in the biblical texts and later developments can lead one to asking the question, 'can any one man have been or done all this?'
3-0 out of 5 stars Compelling yet flawed
This is a mystery story.True, it is nonfiction, but it is a mystery, nonetheless, the mystery of David.Halpern does a good job of solving this mystery and showing us what the real David was probably like, but it is a rough journey to see the solution.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a quick and wonderful read. For example, in Genesis, he points out that psychological transformation and the eventual recognition of moral and social responsibility are played out in a unique generational context from Abraham to Joseph. He makes this and other valid points that certainly take the bible away from simple "fundamentalist" interpretations.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book About the Old Testament
A graduate student of mine discovered, she said quite by accident, Dennis Shulman's Genius of Genesis on the Internet, and gave me a copy. I am very glad she did. This book is a well written, careful, respectful and I would even say loving analysis of the foundational stories of the Book of Genesis. It is an essential addition to any library devoted to the examination of the Bible, Old or New Testament.5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You, Dennis Shulman, for This Excellent Book
A few weeks ago, I happened to hear Dennis Shulman interviewed about his book on National Public Radio, and I was so impressed with him and what he said that I immediately orderd his book. Shulman's book is an outstanding, comprehensive and loving analysis of the Book of Genesis. Although I have been reading these same Genesis stories for more than forty years, since my childhood, I now feel like I finally understand them. What's more, because of this wonderful book, these stories now speak to me. Shulman's book is a good read and a work of inspiration. Thank you, Dennis Shulman, for your book. ... Read more
