5-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading for the lay person
I'm not a Bible scholar, so I'm basing my review on ease of use for the lay person.
5-0 out of 5 stars Literally a revelation
I now realise that I had never really understood the Five Books of Moses before I read this superb translation. It is written in easy to understand, modern English but unlike say the "Good News" version it brings out the full meaning without oversimplification. Many Christians devalue the Old Testament and imagine that only the New Testament is worth studying. However, to those who think that the Laws of Moses are archaic and outmoded, or who imagine that "Love your neighbour as yourself" is solely a New Testament idea, I say read this and be amazed. The Old Testament God is as close to us and full of love for us as Jesus.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Commendable Translation
Translating the Hebrew writings commonly and collectively known as the Old Testament is a complex task. Not only is the scholar faced with the absence of written vowels, leading to many uncertain words, but there are also thewide varieties of literary types (histories, poems, narratives, tales, songs, etc.) to not only translate but convey into an intelligible Englishthat preserves the meaning as well as the style of the original. Add tothis the intense religious importance of the work to the three majorreligions on the world and all the feeling that can accompany that and thetask is, to put it mildly, heroic. Moreover, some translations are madefrom the Masoretic text, others from the Septuagint, still others fromcombinations of the two. While the Septuagint is actually an older version,it is also in Greek. Thus the translator is faced with the choice betweenScylla and Charybdis when choosing a source document - the older Greek andthus twice removed, being a Greek translation of an older Hebrew or perhapseven Aramaic text, or the more recent (ninth century B.C.E.) Masoretic textthat is at least in Hebrew. Most often the result of all this textual andlinguistic juggling is the production of a mere shadow of the original. Inthe case of the JPS Torah, the result is better than average. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a blessing!
This life is full of changes and turns in the road.Adversity is a given. This book is encouraging and helpful in dealing with difficult times in our lives. It gives hope and assurance of our loving Father's control over all things.Trust in Him to weave your adversity into the fabric of your life to make you into the image of Christ.Adversity need not be a stopping point in life, but rather a time to draw near to God and learn from him how to overcome and prosper.I recommend this book very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Written from the heart of God...."
Everyone seems to know how to tell us the best way to handle troubles these days. Charles Stanley knows how to tell us the Scriptural way, and truly writes from the heart of God.5-0 out of 5 stars A TRULY AWESOME BOOK!
This book says it all.It has really helped me during my times of adversity. It really gives you a perspective of just how temporary everything in this world is, and that one day JUSTICE will finally be served to all who have been avenged. Some day the temporary "party" will finally come to an end, and wicked people will ultimately be punished. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Smoking stuff
This guy must have been smoking plenty in order to create his lofty and interesting theories. He has developed his ideas from his first book "The power of now". It's very entertaining for a student of zen buddhism to learn about Tolle's ideas and thoughts. For a thoroughly understanding of this text you will benefit learning about zen. Steven Hagen's "Buddhism Plain and Simple" is an excellent source that strips out Buddha's teaching into it's core, without BS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review by my Ego
As I was flying back to Vancouver tonight, I finished this book on the plane. I watched in amazement as my mind was waiting in excitement to just get home, sit down in front of my computer and write a review of this book. My mind almost raced at the thought of writing this review, collecting with amazing speed all the merits and shortcomings of this amazing book. But something was different. My excitement was tainted! My Ego, in his hasty planning for a grandiose review didn't even realize that it was being "watched". It happened before, but this time the "watching" went on for much longer and much deeper than before. Boy, my Ego is in trouble now! :) LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality
This Bible is tiny, but the quality is very good. Of course, it is not a study Bible, but you have references all along the text, a 52 week reading plan, the favorite readings from the Bible, a harmony of the life of Christ, appearances after the resurrection, the miracles, the parables, a concordance and 7 color maps at the end !5-0 out of 5 stars KJVCornerstone Compact Snap Flap Bible

3-0 out of 5 stars Large Print Compared to older micro print Bibles
I like the Bible I received, but it can hardly be considered "large print." If you compare it to older micro print (8 point font) bibles, then it could be considered large print. I was expecting more like 14 point font. I'll keep it and use it, but it is still difficult to read. I'm only fifty but have been visually impaired since age three.

As others have mentioned, and I'll mention again, the font is just _barely_ larger than you'll find in a normal book. It's not the two- or three-times larger font we were expecting.(Pretty disappointing, considering my dad misses reading his Bible since his eyesight went bad...)I highly recommend the dramatized readings of the bible, having bought one myself (and, happily, was able to lend to my dad when his eyesight went bad). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent general use Bible
This review is on Nelson's Reference Edition of the King James translation of the Holy Bible. Without engaging in argument over whether the newer translations of the bible are "perversions", I will just pose that I prefer the original King James Version since it is what I grew up learning with. Many bits and pieces of scripture that are in my personal memory are in King James. Therefore, when attempting to locate a reference using a concordance or electronic bible search, it is always convenient to resort to that version which matches one's word-for-word recollection. I agree that the stilted Shakespearean English can be a bit cumbersome, but this tends to become less bothersome with familiarity.
4-0 out of 5 stars Binding split; replaced under warranty; very pleased
I have been very pleased with this Bible. The NKJV is my favorite version, since it is based on the same Greek text as the KJV, the Textus Receptus (TR). I really like that the center-column lists all the places in which the similar Majority Text or the less-similar Critical Text (on which most modern versions are based) deviates from the TR. The two-column print is dark and easy to read, with the pages thick enough to have minimal bleed-through. I also really like the four-page preface which explains the translation philosophy and the underlying Hebrew and Greek texts used. As another reviewer has noted, the durability is questionable. I bought mine in January 2001 and a few months ago I noticed that there is a split from top to bottom right in front of the preface. Fortunately, the box says that Nelson offers a lifetime guarantee against failures due to manufacturing defects, so I have just contacted them via their website to see if they will make that good. 29 April 2005.
1-0 out of 5 stars Another Shlocky Item from Thomas Nelson
Up until approximately ten years ago, Nelson Bibles were quality, and I am referring to their Leather-bound editions. They were Smyth-sewn/whipstitched, and would last for years. Unfortunately, except for their "Signature Series" Bibles, which are priced at $99 and more, Nelson (and Crossway) Bibles, in my opinion, are the most inferior on todays market. They are all glue-bound, and have a limited life-expectancy. This is a prime example of it. The New King James translation is an excellent translation. Unfortunately, it is Nelson's house translation, and they charge unreal royalties to any other publishing house who wishes to use it.

2-0 out of 5 stars NKJV is Great , Words are too Large!
The book is concordance and reference materials in this book are great and helpful. My problem is that the text is too large and crowded on the pages making it difficult to read and look up versus. Started giving me a headache after awhile. I would like to recommend the regular Nelson NKJV Reference bible. Its will be easier to read. Another great bible, the one I like the best, is the Nelsons SLIMLINE bible. Perfect to take to church because its smaller and lighter but the words are still large enough to read on a regular basis. I have the genuine leather edition and bought it on amazon and just LOVE it! Hope this helped.

All Christianity is, to some extent, idolatrous. Christian worship is a response to a worshiper's image of Jesus, and all images of Jesus fall short of his reality--in the same way that all biographies and portraits fail to depict a whole person. In Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Borg leading the flock astray?
Borg is new and he is trendy...as Dr. Gardner alludes to in another review here, his interpretation of the Bible etc. almost totally disregards some of the core fundamentals of the Christian faith. It is yet another example of a flash in the pan perversion of Christianity...to claim that Jesus is not God flies against a most central belief...perhaps worth knowing about, but beware...It continually amazes me how we are all so subject to becoming blind to the deeper truths of the Bible...for anyone interested in a relatively thorough critique of Borg, go to www.equip.org and do a search for Borg. You will find a review of his work which I highly recommend that you read before you buy any of Borgs books.
5-0 out of 5 stars "READ THIS BOOK !!!"
Borg says, "GOD does not refer to a supernatural being 'out there' - GOD refers to the sacred at the center of existence, the holy mystery that is all around us and within us.God is the nonmaterial ground and source and presence in which 'we live and move and have our being.'

4-0 out of 5 stars Doctoring the body and the soul
Dr. Walt Larimore returns with the second book of his series which chronicles the early days of his practice in the Smoky Mountains. This book is as charming as the first one, as the residents of tiny Bryson City try to get used to the big city ways of one of its newest practitioners. In the first book of the series, Dr. Larimore discovers that some simple country remedies work just as well or better than the latest medical technology. In this book, he learns that the key to curing patients is not only in the physical realm, but in the mental and spiritual areas as well.He goes into greater detail about his daughter's cerebral palsy, and does not hesitate to tell some funny stories in which he is the butt of the joke. This book and the others in the series make for delightful reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Read!
I very much enjoyed the first novel in this series, Bryson City Tales, and was delighted when this second book was published. If you are a fan of reading about small-town life, you'll love these books.Dr. Larimore's narrative brings the reader right into the story. The stories range from amusing, heartwarming, suspenseful, sad, to inspiring.I'm eagerly awaiting the next book, Bryson City Secrets, due out in March! If you're looking for a terrific read, I recommend these highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars The hills are alive...
Oh wait -- that's another matter.
3-0 out of 5 stars A so-so addition to the Hinges o' History
Cahill continues his series with the Greatest of all men.Does he hit his mark?Kind of.Cahill tries hard with this book, but comes off as a pseudo-scholar who tries to pass off a lot of his own bias and intuition as indubitable fact. That he respects Jesus greatly is clear; that he selects from a certain thread of scholarship only is also clear. He has pretty much made up his mind about the dates, authorship, etc of texts, which is fine, but he won't admit that there are competing, compelling views that differ from his. There is much to delight and disappoint a variety of viewpoints about Jesus, and Cahill refuses to be pigeonholed. This isn't necessarily always a good thing, as it seems to come from inconsistency and a desire to be original, rather than from a coherent portrait of who Jesus is/was.Surprisingly, in all of this, he bucks modern trends and gives us a fresh, positive view of Paul; he also takes the view that the first few generations of Christians really had it right, and the last 1900 years have been mostly unmitigated disaster, with but a handful of those who call themselves Christians being hypocrites, neanderthal fundamentalists, the usual ilk.In fact, he even says Christians have more conclusively rejected Jesus than Jews have.Buy this if you have a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket/Amazon gift card;otherwise, take a pass.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rewriting History
This book is the 3rd in a series of "Hinges of History" by the author Thonmas Cahill. For a book about Jesus, the writing style is somewhat cavalier; not unfunny, mind you, but in the context of the discussions, out of place. If the style is somewhat disconcerting, the contents are downright disturbing. This is not a scholarly book. Indeed, it is full of errors and oversights, and on occasion, bad taste. For example...
