2-0 out of 5 stars Not nonpartisan
Wallis pitches his book as an attempt to show that Christians can be Democrats or Republicans, or whatever presumably. Here, he is correct. He also pitches his argument as being nonpartisan. Here, he is mistaken; it doesn't take too long to figure out his idea of nonpartisan is liberal Democrat.

1-0 out of 5 stars WELL WRITTEN BLATHER
Although well written, this book is just left wing socialist blather. Most egregiously in error is the author's characterization of Catholic social teaching. He wuld have us believe that the Catholic Church is all behind the US social welfare system. Just one quote summarizes where the Catholic Church really is on this issue:
5-0 out of 5 stars finding common ground in higher ground
jim wallis' book "God's politics: why the right gets it wrong and the left doesn't get it" offers a great response to many major issues that our country is grappling with these days. wallis convicts both republicans and democrats and speaks with a surprising level of urgency and candor. he reminds the reader that God is neither a republican or a democrat, that He doesn't want you to vote partisan but according to your highest ideals, and that yes, He definitely HATES war, torture, and injustice. some conservative critics complain that he wants to make all Christians into democrats and start a socialist movement, but it's actually very clear from reading the first few pages that this isn't true. no matter how you vote and no matter what your faith, it's an insightful read that bucks all the party lines and encourages those who want to vote from the heart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Endless Subject Matter
I am amazed that the most sought after, fought after book in history has not been reviewed. Well it is an honor to be a trail blazer in writing the first amazon review on the Bible. First off I prefer the New King James Version of the bible because it preserves the old english language but makes it more understandable in todays vernacular. It is unfortunate that many have used Christianity for ill and have never even referred to the basic teachings of the Bible. The Bible speaks in figurative and literal language and for first time readers I would definitley recommend a Bible with commentary to explain the many issues the Bible addresses.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a confusing mix of medicine, religion, sports and memoir
Although there are certainly interesting elements here, this book has some of the most jarring transitions from one element to another I've ever read.Parts of it are strictly medical, including a tale at the beginning that would make any seasoned viewer of CSI troubled. Then there are long sports sections---high school football and fishing especially. Then the author has a religious revelation, and we read about that for a while. After that, it's straight memoir for a bit, and we learn about his family and past, but in disjointed, someone confusing pieces.None of the writing is bad, but I just couldn't settle in and really get much out of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful memoir
Dr. Walt Larimore received excellent medical training at Duke University.Armed with a new medical degree, his wife, and 3-year-old daughter, he journeyed to the small town of Bryson City, North Carolina, to begin his practice. What he learned is that there were many things which had not been taught at the Duke Medical School.Doctors and nurses who had been in practice for many years taught him that sometimes the old, simple procedures worked just as well as the up-to-date techniques which he favored early in his practice. He also learned that appeals to the Great Physician were much appreciated by his patients and served to calm him in a crisis. He was surprised to discover that a country doctor does not only deal with human patients, but animal ones as well. All was not easy, as both of his children faced medical crises, and some of the older doctors opposed his presence in their town.Dr. Larimore's self-effacing manner and gentle humor make this a delightful read.I am looking forward to reading the next two books in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent- entertaining, captivating, and heart touching
Larimore captivated both my wife and I with his writing and tales of his experience as a new doctor starting out in a new town in North Carolina.Unlike one reader, I never got the impression that the local people were anymore "backwards" than you would find anywheres else.Indeed, it becomes quite clear as Larimore continues to develop as a complete doctor that he has a number of things to learn from the people that were around him.It is fascinating to watch him grow in his practice and expertise, in his faith, and in his relationships with the local people. His love for his patients come through quite clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING
I read this book and am now going key by key. This book has helped give me have a different outlook on life. You are changing the way you live. This is not a "do it quick" book; it shows you how to change your life for the better. You need to do it on your own schedule.
4-0 out of 5 stars I love books!
I enjoy reading Joyce's books because I like how down to earth she is and she just hits home for me. I got a little bored with this book I suppose because there is a lot of practical advice and commonsense advice. A lot of the things I have read in numerous other books on health and my walk with God so maybe that is why it was repitious to me. There are a lot of good key points and it is a good book to reference to and take to heart and try to follow. There are some good things to copy and print and try to keep a journal and follow each day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best "Healthy Living" Book
I bought this book not quite sure what I was getting, but the concept sounded good.I began the book on a Friday and finished it by Sunday night.I am a Christian so I agree wholeheartedly about Key 1 - Letting God do the Heavy Lifting. Our willpower is our best friend when things are going well, but our downfall when things aren't so peachy. Willpower then takes its leave and in comes reason and believe me, I can reason my way into or out of anything!I'm too tired, I don't want to go to the store, it is just one bite, it won't hurt anything, I don't want to get up early, I don't want to walk - I'm in a hurry, etc. Reason will always let you down. The bible says we are led by God's Spirit, not our own willpower."Not by might, not by power (or willpower), but by My Spirit says the Lord of hosts".Willpower isn't a bad thing, but instead of relying on it, Joyce teaches us to rely on His Spirit instead.Call on God and ask Him for His strength, His peace, His Joy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a little inconsistent, but always sincere
The reviews for this book seem to be extremely polarized, and I can see why. Those who endorse it do so because they say it restores a sense of romance and adventure to relationship with God: and it does. Those who hate it cite the way there is little strong Biblical support, which is also true.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I was given this book as a gift and have really enjoyed it thus far (only 2/3 finished). It speaks to feelings that all women have and helps explain that it's normal and ok to feel certain ways. It also talks about hard issues that not everyone has gone through, but how to get through them. I would recommend this book to anyone woman looking for a good soul searching read. It really touched me.

4-0 out of 5 stars King James version Holy Bible
This is the text I love the best and it is easy to read and with the words of Jesus in red.My only criticism in that the corners of the cover tend to bend - they are made of cardboard which is not as durable as leather, for which I would have paid more. However, it is very good value, and the delivery was as swift as ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of all my Bibles, this is my personal favorite
I own multiple translations and editions of the Bible, but this Cambridge Large-Print KJV is my favorite.I'm not sure what the book photo on the Amazon page is supposed to represent.A version of the box it comes in?The box mine came in is a solid gold box with red and black print. The Bible itself is lovely red Moroccan leather with "Holy Bible" stenciled simply on the front and spine. This and THE NEW OXFORD ANNOTATED BIBLE edition of the New Revised Standard Version are the two translations I use by far the most.In studying the Gospels I frequently consult THE SYNOPSIS OF THE FOUR GOSPELS in the RSV version as edited by Kurt Aland, which arranges the four gospels in parallel and which I consider an essential study tool. But for sheer joy of reading the Bible I prefer this KJV over all other versions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Premier Personal Reading KJV Bible
With the plethora of study material now available to any student of any level of learning, a "study" Bible is a little obsolete.Space constraints in study Bibles require limited notes on even very important subjects and no notes at all on many others. It is also virtually impossible for the compiler of the study Bible to avoid personal slants and interpretations in his or her notes.

Editorial Review

Karen Armstrong speaks to the troubling years following her decision to leave the life of a Roman Catholic nun and join the secular world in 1969. What makes this memoir especially fascinating is that Armstrong already wrote about this era once---only it was a disastrous book. It was too soon for her to understand how these dark, struggling years influenced her spiritual development, and she was too immature to protect herself from being be bullied by the publishing world. As a result, she agreed to portray herself only in as "positive and lively a light as possible"---a mandate that gave her permission to deny the truth of her pain and falsify her inner experience. The inspiration for this new approach comes from T. S. Eliot's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Touching and Powerful
Thank you Karen for recording your experience in such a truthful and therefore powerful way. Your courage and determination in the face of inhumanity is a familiar drumbeat that we would all do well to march to. Your stories of survival with compassion and mercy are a shining-light to those of all faiths and of all languages. Your language of love and hope is universal and you are a true friend. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Karen Armstrong is a great writer, with quite the story to tell. The Spiral Staircase recounts the most powerful and change-filled years of her life--it concentrates mostly on the few years following her departure from life as a Catholic nun.She tells her story so honestly and openly that you really get a feel for Karent Armstrong the person, not just the successful writer.I read The Spiral Staircase before I read any of her other works, but since then I've enjoyed both her biography of Buddha, and "Islam: A Short History."Her memoir is candid and her prose is neither too emotional nor too academic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Describes temporal lobe epilepsy with Grace
Another reviewer, a nurse who has interest in temporal lobe epilepsy and thought that Armstrong did not adequately explain temporal lobe epilepsy, has obviously never experienced a temporal lobe seizure. Karen Armstrong's descriptions of her temporal lobe seizures were spine-tingling, and nearly brought me to tears with the feeling that "Finally! Someone has put it into words! Someone understands!" Her plight out of the darkness of religious life is inspiring and her experiences with epilepsy make a remarkable backdrop. I recommend this read for people who have never questioned their faith as well as those who have. I also recommend it for families and friends of people with epilepsy. ... Read more

Passages concerning Prayer, Faith, Healing, the HOLY GHOST and the Presence of GOD are highighted through the Bible and in the back there's a journal section for your experiences with each. Want my advice, get it and have yoursel a blast with the HOLY GHOST. Nothing mean or freaky about the HOLY GHOST. He's all class even though He's all fun and games.

2-0 out of 5 stars From the Same Minds That Brought You Joel Osteen
I purchased Eldredge's "Wild at Heart", and I didn't think it was scripturally sound. I was given "Waking the Dead" as a present, so I tried to read it as well. I finally gave it up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book by John Eldredge is wonderful. It was recommended to me and now I'm recommending it to others. The four streams he touches on one doesn't often come across, and the examples he gives one can relate to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waking the Dead that are Wild at Heart
I like this book much better than Wild at Heart, though I tought students from it for about half a year. The basic thing I've taken away from the books is that it teaches us to be open about our futures and grab some nostalga along the way. Waking the Dead like Wild at Heart focus on what most conservatives will call OPEN THEOLOGY. This approach to God creates a sort of open question as to the future and whether we have a hand in it. John frequently sets up statements that lead conservatives to view them as redefining God, His intentions and what scripture says.

The stories of real communication in this book will stay with me for a long time.I wish Dr. Remen's examples of listening and being present would be required reading for medical residents and practicing doctors, especially in this time of increasingly computerized medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read and receive a blessing
This is a great book. It affirms that healing has a spiritual dimension. Some of the stories touched me in such a way that I will remember them all of my life. I read this book as part of a book club; it generated good discussion. I plan to give away copies to friends and family. 3-0 out of 5 stars Love God's Dream for Us
While I do not always agree with Bishop TuTu's religious views, I find his narrative absolutely inclusive of all views and I loved reading this book. The story of liberation from South African Apartheid, the message to love one's enemies, the message of God's Love for all of us, is worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem
This little book, a mere 128 pages, is a true gem.Bishop Tutu very eloquently discusses the need for inclusivity and forgiveness both within the church and within society at large. This is God's wish, and we must do what we can to fulfill this wish. The book is very easy to read and great for meditations.Read it and you'll be glad you did. ...
