2-0 out of 5 stars Beware
This text gives us a new way of throwing the I Ching to get much more specific answers. Problem is, one of the great strengths of the I Ching is that is stays on the mythic realm of archetype and imagistic poetry from which one interprets one's answer.Once you try to ground that into the specifics of the mundane, you get into trouble. I tried using their technique and wound up getting very frightening predictions of impending, fatal events that (now years later) I can say with confidence didn't happen. The beauty of the I Ching is that it offers us a poetic archetype of where we are, that we then interpret. The more you remove the poetry, and the interpretation, the more you remove the spirit of the original. I agree with previous reviewer who said, there's wisdom here, but it's not the I Ching.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom, yes. I Ching, no.
This book is quite profound and expressive of the truth and wisdom of the mind-body. It is radical and even foundational in its concepts and advice. However, as an I Ching Practitioner and a doctoral student schooled in myth, religion, alchemy and philosophy, including Buddhism and Taoism, I find it highly subjective and unbased in its I Ching relatedness and effectiveness. It is far too didactic and pedagogical, much like the Course in Miracles in its oversimplicity and one-size-fits-all perspective. It is esoteric psychological analysis run amok in my estimation and possesses none of the aesthetic or poesis of the I Ching which presents the image to the inquirer and then the inquirer "incubates" it much like a dream image, and arrives at his or her own understanding and direction. This is an I Ching for the Western mind which needs to be told what to think and what to do, and is really unable to either arrive at its own way/conclusion, and doesn't have the confidence to believe or accept it anyway. To understand the I Ching, one must be able to see it from its own perspective, which is one of mythos and metaphor. One must be able to receive it with grace and I'm afraid this version is quite graceless. However, that being said, if one wants to be analyzed and told what to do, it's probably sufficient. I, for one, do not count myself in that group. BUT,YET...if this book could simply be read for its wisdom and practical straight-talk, rather than as an I Ching book, I would HIGHLY recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Penetrating Vision
Carol Anthony's previous work was the best available in making the sage real. This new book challenges everything we thought we knew about the oracle! If you are strong enough to follow her transmission it will lead to personal liberation. The book teaches nothing less than that. You will need to be serious, you will need to be meditative, you will need to listen deeply to hear what is being said. It will seldom be easy. Did you expect it would?

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful!!
it's a must for everyone. Osho, one of the many great gifts life has given us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Positive
I felt a sense of relief after reading this book. It's very positive and uplifting and very funny at times. It allows you to see your limitless potential instead of instilling a guilt-ridden, "I am a sinner" mentality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational! One of the best self help books I've ever read
I read a lot of self-help books.I had read that Osho is a contraversial figure, often accused of being a preachy spiritual quack. This may be true.He does ramble on and interject his teachings with stories (and even jokes!) that don't really support his points. He does seem to like to listen to himself talk.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book, Brimming Over With Wisdom and Compassion
There was a time when I dismissed the Dalai Lama as the latest celebrity fad. But the more I read of him, the more I studied the man's books, the more I came to realize how wrong I was.
5-0 out of 5 stars Offering remarkably enduring insights into the wit and wisdom of the Dalai Lama
The newly revised and updated twenty-fifth year anniversary edition of Kindness, Clarity, Insight by The Fourteenth Dalai Lama His Holiness Tenzino Gyatso, is expertly translated and co-edited by Jeffery Hopkins and Elizabeth Napper. Offering remarkably enduring insights into the wit and wisdom of the Dalai Lama., Kindness, Clarity, And Insight deftly covered many diverse subjects ranging from "Karma", to "Meditation", to "Eight Verses for Training the mind", to "The Path to Enlightenment", to "Tibetan Views on Dying", and so much more. An essential addition to any personal, academic, or community library Buddhist Studies reference collection and supplemental reading list, Kindness, Clarity, Insight offers a Buddhist perspective which is very strongly recommended for all students of the teachings of the Dalai Lama.
4-0 out of 5 stars The best author, but not the best book!
Everything by the Dalai Lama is amazing, but I have to say that this is probably his worst book. This is the one I started reading his works on, but I would recommend reading The Art of Happiness or Ethics for the New Millenium over this one. It was only good as a starter book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very spiritually elevating book
I found this book very interesting and very elevating. Though sometimes the language can throw you off however after you grasp their meaning they seem to be describing something very deep. The chapters on Babaji and Lahiri Mahasaya are a must read for every aspirant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most inspiring book of my life
This book literally altered my life's path.Profound and clicked with my inner mind!Thank you!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is It Reality Or A Blend Of Reality And Fantasy?
I read this book thirty years ago(do you think I waited long enough to write this review?) and enjoyed it very much, but found it perplexing.I, myself, am a yogi, but this story would strike most people as being a blend of truth and fantasy. But what is wrong with that?It is a beautiful story that teaches us many things about the way yogis look at life--and death.Do not approach this book with a critical eye on truth.Instead, think of it as a type of epic poem.Reflect on the reality of it at your leasure! One thing is true about this book:the author wrote this book with great love of all humanity! If you have developed an interest in some aspect of yoga and want to learn something more of what traditional yoga(as opposed to the "designer" versions touted lately) is about, give this a try. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Phenomonal Book
This book is a vault of wisdom. The author has made the intricate mantra work, easily understood in a profound way. I have searched long and hard to understand the use of mantras, encountering little more than a brick wall time and time again, in my search. This author has taught me not only how to climb the wall, but to walk through it. A commendable book, that I recommend to all, with great excitement.
5-0 out of 5 stars TWO WORDS:THIS WORKS!!!
I used the Lakshmi (for prosperity) and Ganesha (for removal of obstacles) mantras from this book to help me find a job.My unemployment benefits were about to run out and I wasn't finding anything.Despite no background in the industry I am now in, on the 40th (the last) day of my practice, I was hired in an entry level position that will soon lead to more money.Previously, I was getting second interviews, but losing out to other people with more experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars The power of the Word.
I attended one of Mr. Thomas Ashley-Farrand meetings in Los Angeles and was impressed by his humble (esoterically speaking) way to communicate his truth. I read the book, Healing Mantras: Using Sound Affirmations for Personal Power, Creativity, and Healing, and started usingthe mantras immediately in my service to humanity, the result is amazing. I have all the books, I practice chanting mantras regularly, and I can see the miracles with my own eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone
This is not an easy book to read, but for the spiritual seeker it can be stimulating and rewarding. Goswami is an expert at quantum physics and explains how it helps to reveal spiritual phenomena. His explanations are clear but also tedious. He answers practically every question that can be anticipated; however,in doing so he risks losing all but the most determined reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE AHAH! BOOK
I was about four years old when I discovered that things die, and the outrage that I felt at this news has fueled a fifty year search to understand what we're doing here. This is not my only literary quest, but it is a big one, and it has taken me all over the map. When I studied relativity and quantum physics in college, I saw - 'through a glass darkly' - that this was an important piece of the puzzle, but real understanding eluded me. I just bought the The Visionary Window, and I knew almost immediately, that this, for me, was the Ahah! book - the one that brought all the pieces together. I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hold a Webster with you for this
Although the book seems to be sincere effort in terms of the treatment of subject, but the language is too tricky with very very esoteric terminology used. Also the use of word 'quantum' seems to be too casual and thus the terms such as 'quantum monad' seem too ambiguous. Perhaps when Mr Goswami has finally reached some perspective about 'truth', he will realize that any truth that can be expressed, ceases to be 'the truth'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This guy knows Japanese
I've read several versions of this book and William Scott Wilson seems to have the best understanding of the Japanese language and desire to keep it as "word for word" as he can keep it without making the text obscure. I highly recommend this translation. Oh yeah, and this book is highly valuable for philosophers and martial artists alike. Musashi was a genius of both martial arts and life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best translation available
I have studied this book for years, and have read five different translations. The William Scott Wilson translation is by far the best. I always get the feeling that other translators are putting too much of themselves or their ideas about what Musashi is saying into the translations. Wilson's translation is clear and concise and yet does not feel filtered.
5-0 out of 5 stars Master
There is only one reason to fight an apponent and that is to cut him down and win.The "Way" is the only way to assure victory in any engagement, at anytime, anywhere, with anyone. One must dedicate and commit all one has to living the "Way" and then one can reach the level of complete mastery over oneself.Nothing else matters. Not fighting stances, thoughts, beliefs, but only the single determintion to cut down your opponent and win.Nothing can come between your goal and the outcome you desire. If you think about doing anything, you have lost before you have started. While the other person is thinking about how to strike, or how to stand, or where to look, you have already cut him down. He's dead or close to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, understandable, practical, & profound
This is a beautifully written practice manual for Bn Dzogchen (~Buddhist Nyingma or old school) dream & sleep yogas based on the Mother Tantra. The author confirms most Western psychological views of dreams but, though some object, states that lucid dreaming (in which the dreamer is conscious & in control) is of great spiritual as well as psychological value. He states, despite some Buddhist authors, p. 12: "how greatly dream is valued in Tibetan culture & in the Bn religion, & how information from the unconscious is often of greater value than the information the conscious mind can provide."He provides a sensitive, balanced, non-extremist perspective-pp. 25-6: "Cultural ignorance is developed & preserved in traditions...If we are not careful, the teachings can be made to support our ignorance" & p. 94: "It can be healthy to give up worldly life & become a monk or a nun or it can be an unhealthy attempt to escape difficult experiences through suppression & avoidance."He provides explanations easily understood by western practitioners using modern analogies e.g. saying that mind can be like a computer with 2 windows open at once.Since scientists have shown that waking visualization can increase task performance, he logically extrapolates that to lucid dreaming as well. His approach is pragmatic & transportable to the West-e.g. p. 206: "Continue learning & receiving teachings, but develop a deep enough understanding that you can take from them what supports you."He also perceptively observes that awake practice of emptiness/Rigpa/mindfulness parallels lucid dreaming-i.e. viewing the awake state as a dream is analogous to lucid (conscious) dreaming-a yab-yum or yin-yang relationship & relates these yogas' spiritual aspects. This may be the best adaptation of traditional Bn/Buddhist works/methods to the West I've seen (see Traleg Kyabgon's "Mind at Ease" for a Mahamudra one).He recognizes that p. 41: "The concept of self-hatred is alien to Tibetans who do not have words to describe it" & compensates for cultural as well as terminological differences (p. 200: "According to Bn-Buddhism, the conventional self does exist.Otherwise no one would create karma, suffer, & find liberation. It is the inherent self that does not exist.Lack of an inherent self means that there is no core discrete entity that is unchanging through time").In short, it's a most valuable contribution to both spiritual realization & East-West understanding. His advice that p. 137: "Maybe we should write a sentence on our toothbrush, `after this, wash your mind" has, IMHO, universal application. This book is HIGHLY recommended-as are his other works.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book to start
We spend a third of our lives sleeping, with our consciousness totally 'lost' while the physical body rests.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for the engaged dreamer
This is one of the best books on dreaming I've ever read. As a non-mystic and skeptical Buddhist, I found that some aspects of the Boen school's teachings (and sections of this book) to be a bit too mystical, but overall the philosophy of the book was generally pretty sound. The exercises he suggests are somewhat more helpful, I might argue, than the ones suggested by Stephen LaBerge in EXPLORING THE WORLD OF LUCID DREAMING. Ultimately, anyone interested in lucid dreaming, or using dreams to benefit his or her own waking life, ought to own, read, and re-read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Best Resource on Shamanism
Combining the cross-cultural scholarship of Eliade's "Shamanism" and the experiential teachings of Harner's "Way of the Shaman," Kalweit's "Dreamtime and Inner Space" has remained the single most useful work on shamanism in my research library. Fascinating, readable, and accessible, this is a book to refer back to again and again. Kalweit is a believer, but he is an educated believer. He presents the reader with shamanic experiences from a multiplicity of cultures, teaching techniques through the stories of shamans from around the world. If you have any interest at all in this subject, "Dreamtime and Inner Space" is a book you must own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delves into Shamanism and doesn't get swamped in New Age
Really wonderful book. I happened across it in my college library. It isn't a story and he isn't selling an idea. It brings to light how a person comes to be recognized as a shaman. He explores how the individual is transformed from a normal person into a shaman through a traumatic event or illness.Once the transformation is complete that person can never return to her former self or know her former and 'normal' consciousness again. Fascinating stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book on Shamanism
I cannot emphasize it enough, this is one of the most definitive books on shamanism available to the public at large. This book goes into extensive details about the practices and rites of Shamanism. The author writes about the indigenous religions of societies from North and South America, Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Siberia, Polynesia and Nepal. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Work...
Firstly, Bhikkhu Nanamoli (Osbert Moore) was a gifted intellectual and prized authentic textual translation above mere book writing.Unlike soooo many Buddhist authors in the West, he was NOT looking to sell a book and become an Author to impress friends and family or help sell his meditation retreats. His intent was always aimed at a scholarly (re: intellectually rigorous) rendering of sacred texts. This rare combination of a deeply intellectual mind with the veneration of a monks spirit towards his textual sources has given us some of the most pristine English translations of the Buddhas works.4-0 out of 5 stars A great antology from the Vinaya Pitaka
The book presents a selection of the suttas with an historical underpinning and without ever extending beyond the limited borders of the Pali Canon.

gThe Tao of Nutritionh is a food therapy guide based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which looks at food in a slightly different way from Western nutrition. The book is divided into 5 main sections.Section 1 very briefly outlines the theory including yin and yang, the main organs of the body, the 5 elements and 5 tastes, causes of diseases, prevention of diseases and a guideline for a balanced diet based on a pyramid (which is not unlike that used in macrobiotics).Section 2 is a list of foods including detail on both the energetics (i.e. which of the 5 tastes the food has, as well as whether it has a cooling, warming or moistening tendency) and healing aspects (such as clearing heat, removing dampness, lubricating the lungs, strengthening the heart etc.) of each food.Section 3 gives tips on which foods can help various health conditions such as bronchitis, eczema and headaches.Section 4 offers vegetarian recipes.Section 5 offers a simple meal plan.4-0 out of 5 stars An great guide for good health and healing

After reading the Tao of Nutritrian by Dr. Chang this book is not worth the paper its printed on. There is much more useful book on foods, than this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars engagement calendar
I have been buying this daily calendar for over 10 years. I like the weekly sayings and photos and the layout of the pages. I never consider buying any other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contains breathtaking illustrations and words of wisdom......
"Inner Reflections 2007 Engagement Calender" is filled with the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda. Each week of 2007 is being presented with words ringing in truth and wisdom. Furthermore, the illustrations which accompany these priceless comments, makes this calender an inspirarion for all. Additionally, the words are subtly relavent to each painting and picture. This gently forces the reader to probe deeper into the meaning of these words by Yogananda.
5-0 out of 5 stars unequaled beauty
This calendar has for many years outdone even the Sierra Club calendar, which it otherwise closely resembles. The spiritual quotations add greatly to its overall impact. The photographs are absolutely nonpareil.I continue to marvel at how the organization can come up with such exceedingly beautiful photographs year after year. Many would make stunning prints and a few are actually available as such, although not cheap! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important for personal conduct
It is rare to find a book which presents the essence of the Buddha's teaching in a clear and concise outline. Although the book was published for the first time in 1962 the first paragraph of the first chapter shows the reader that one is confronted with an eternal truth.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good topic, difficult style
I started off very enthusiastic with this book. However, my enthusisam fell page by page.I literally had to force myself through some sections. The subject matter is not the problem. The issue I had was with the writing style, which I found to be too unclear and difficult to comprehend. Many times I'd read a sentence and say "what?"Basically, I felt like I had to wade through words to get the point.I give the book 3 stars because the subject is important and there was much valuable information in the book, including a collection of scriptures on mindfulness. However, I would advise someone wanting to learn about Buddhist meditation and mindfulness to read Mindfulness in Plain English by Bhante G.If you want, buy both books and see what you think for yourself.I personally found Mindfulness in Plain English much more clear and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Part III was my favorite
What an amazing book.Probably not for the beginner, and I say this only because of the translation. If I recall correctly, the English translation came after a few other translations over the years and earlier successful editions.I became enchanted with the text and the way it was presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Real One
If you are really interested in Yoga-as a practitioner and not merely out of intellectual curiosity-this is one of the best books you will ever own. It is a thorough commentary on the Yoga Sutras from the viewpoint of a true Master practitioner, containing countless jewels of profound insight into Yoga practice. It gives hints, and even many outright disclosures, of the real techniques of Yoga. I have read a number of translations of the Yoga Sutras, and this is not merely the best, it is in my opinion the only real one. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Real One

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Translation Of A Vedic Scripture Ever!!!
I have been studying the Vedic scriptures since 1996. And, I must say, out of all the different translations; the bhagavad-gita, the rig-veda and etc....this one by Sri Swami Satchianda is the best!
5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Sutras of Patanjali-Commentary by Swami Satchidananda
This is an excellent book.It gives the Sanskrit for each of the 200 sutras, then the English translation, followed by a comment by Swami Satchidananda. These comments are essential for helping make some of sutras more understandable.I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Clear Beautiful Wisdom
This is one of several translations that I have read.I enjoyed it.His explanation is to the point and easy to understand. Some of the examples he gave I thought were long and (even for me) circuitous.

5-0 out of 5 stars In general, a great book on Zen.
Second book read by the author. I have found no discontinuity between the authors books, which to me is a sign of a good book. Has made me think in a different way, glad I came across this book; I wasn't even looking!

5-0 out of 5 stars unifying and inspiring
Direct, heartwarming, beautiful and points to what many of us have glimpsed and recognized as the nature of everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just sitting!
"Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" has consistently been the best-selling book on Buddhism in the USA --- for good reasons.Shunryu Suzuki-Roshi (not to be confused with the great academic scholar of Zen Buddhism, Professor Daisetzu Teitaro Suzuki) spoke clearly, compellingly, and comprehensively of the heart of Zen.It is a source of great joy that a second collection of Shunryu Suzuki's teishos (i.e., Dharma talks) has been published. What I am about to say about the two collections may reflect the change in my needs over time, rather than a real difference between the two anthologies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding and transforming negative feelings
This book gave me insight about accepting negative feelings and not letting them overpower you. I like the use of metaphors: visualizing anger like a crying baby (embrace it and soothe it), treating unpleasant feelings like an unexpected, perhaps also unpleasant guest (give them hospitality with the assurance they WILL go away...) I use this concept to try to comfort my (real-life) child. This book has given me many inspirations.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book blew my [angry] mind...
Ok, true, he talks a lot about breathing and for any of us that have a real temper, we're tired of hearing untempered people say, "Just breeeeath..." But he says a lot more than JUST breath. This book is very applicable, especially if you anger is affecting your personal relationships. The writing is simple and straightfoward. I have learned so much about how to think of my anger and what it means to "embrace" my anger and listen to it as to as weeping child. For me it is working. I have tried a lot of things to hide, suppress, LET GO, etc... and to the general public I serem really happy and relaxed. But inside I"m stormy and this book has great and specific instructions on how to find my way through the storm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Yet Profound
Probably the most destructive emotion to people is anger. Its insidious effects can not only destroy previously important relationships but it can literally kill a person via stroke or whatever. So many times we realize intellectually the harmful effects of anger but
