1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible translation and here's why:
I am a Sikh, and, as noted by others, this is a terrible translation of our holy scripture.I was torn between giving this a rating of 1 because of the terrible translation, or a 5 for it being at least somewhat of a representation of our holy scripture.I eventually decided to give it a 1 because lisa jones gave it a 5 for the same reason I would have, and because this is such a bad translation that I'm not so sure it is a good representation of our Sikh Philosophy, as I will describe. This traslation was done by a man, Trumpp, who, historically, had an unfavorable view of Sikhs. His goal, as noted in various historical references, was to engender the idea that Sikhism is just another sect of Hinduism and the Guru Granth is just another Hindu scripture. This is quite wrong so I would like to give you an example of how bad the translation is, and how Trumpp was trying to achieve his goal.To do so, you need go no further than the very first two words on the very first page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sikh History Book
The task of writing any religious group's history is like walking on a mine field. Grewal has come out of this walk unscathed, nothing less than a miracle. Many historians have burnt their fingers doing what Grewal has done so well. This books starts with the evolution of Sikh philosophy and traces the Sikh history as it went through many twists and turns. The noticable difference is that author doesn't treat Sikhs in isolation from their surroundings. It puts the Sikhs and their history in full social context of those times. In fact, the book also offers the best history of Mughal period as it coincides with Sikh Gurus very well. It dwells upon the political, cultural and religious unfolding of this period. The internal conflict among various Sikh sects and communities is represented very well. The language is very crisp, concise and without any repetition or unwanted opinion pieces. Anyone trying to understand the modern political upheaval in the region must start with this book. It covers the period from well before Guru Nanak to 1980s. One can easily see why it took author 10 years to write it. A must for anyone having anything to do with Sikhs or Punjab. Worth every cent of its price.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars know about 3HO, Rick Ross and Guru Bhajan
First, the book is nicley written and the exercises may or may not work. i noticed a rise in energy and old patterns coming up, might or might not be outcome of directed intent ... ( i do a lot of systems, from asthanga, hartha to martial arts and pilates) I immersed myself in kundalini yoga before i found out about who yogi bhajan, the founder of the system, truly is (a former taxi driver who feld from India and claims to have recieved these exercises from spirit after spending time in a cave. he founded kundalini yoga AFTER he couldn't make money in NY as a cab driver and arrived in LA, thrilled by the "mayan riches" of the upper - class society there. traditional sikh say what he does has nothing to do with their system and really put the emphasis on that he is a cheat. search the internet for information, especially sites from the rick ross institute http://www.rickross.com/reference/3ho/3hovisitor.html
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual
This book is organized quite well. The layout is simple and straightforward. You are taken step by step in creating your own yoga routine. First, you learn about numerology and then use it to calculate which yogic bodies you need to work on. There are two meditations to choose from per yogic body. Next, you learn about the chakras and use a chart to rate your abilities within each chakra. You then use these scores to determine which chakra to work on first. Finally, you are shown how to compose an entire routine consisting of warm-up exercises, your personal kriya (chakra exercise), deep relaxation and wake-up sequence, your personal yogic body meditation, and a completion mantra. There is easily enough information in this book to provide for years of diverse methods of practice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Gentle introduction, but lacks consistency in purpose
This book synthesizes quite well the purpose of Kundalini Yoga. The first part on numerology and chakras is well written and provides relatively unbiased information. Parts 2, 3 and 4 on the other hand stand a little behind the first part as neither Yoga nor Kundalini can be limited to Hatha Yoga, the purely physical part of Yoga most people understand of Yoga. 5-0 out of 5 stars level headed reading
this is a very sane and sober comprehensive dig into a wealth of issues surrounding Jesus studies and the four gospels of the new testament.A tremendous amount of issues are put on the table and you will truly learn alot from this book.Well researched, careful scholarship and a well read author who is indeed conservative, but not a fundamentalist. The only quibble I have with this work is that I wish it dealt a bit more with the greco-roman milieu of miralcles, myths and mystery religions. These subjects are included in this book to be sure, but I think more material would have been helpful. This is only a minor quibble though, after all, one volume can only pack so much into it. I also think that on a few rare occasions His conservative bent may get the better of him, but again, I would say this is rare.It is a bit of a tedious read in some ways, but this is to be expected from a work that is not designed to be a fun narrative story. This is not a devotional read, but rather this work seeks to educate readers on the historical issues of Jesus studies as well as the gospels along with the meaning and understanding thereof. This is sorely needed as too much "bible teaching" today is less than grounded in careful sanity. For a very accurate study of Jesus issues with sanity, don't miss this one! Also see N.T. Wright's, The Original Jesus, and Peter Walker's little book by Intervarsity Press, Jesus in His World. These are top notch intro level books helping one to understand Jesus according to His historical and cultural context.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight Shot
Blomberg wrote an excellent book. This book is a careful study of the context, life and times of Jesus in the first century. This book is not 'light reading,' and probably needs to be done when you are fully engaged. With that said, it will put you in a different zone in your knowledge of the first century and the Gospels than before you read it.JVD

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves to be in your library
Whether you just have a few questions about the gospels, or whether you are a serious student, this book deserves to be in your library. Blomberg givesthorough overview of all the different aspects of bible study, including the political, religious and socioeconmic background of the gospels, and all the various modern theories and arguments about the gospels, their dates and authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS!
This is the companion to Stuttgarts Septuaginta. It is an excellent lexicon. It has the highest quality Greek font. It is very informitive. And is nicely bound. Another fine book out of Stuttgart, made like books used to be made. Thank God for such gifts to man!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it.
I do not regularly read the Septuagint, but there are times when a passage from it is helpful for work in the New Testament. At such times the last thing one wants is to encounter an unfamiliar vocable or a vocable that has a twist in meaning different from the usual New Testament meaning.Such words are not likely to be found in other Greek lexicons. For such times this work is very helpful. It is not exactly a concordance to the Septuagint, but does give several passages where the word is used, sometimes indicating the list is complete for all occurences. It is spendy, but a very good resource.Put it on a wish list and wait for someone to buy it for you. ... i wrote a too lengthy review of this book a couple years ago yet Amazon.com printed my review..i see it's not here now!! ... this book gives some good physical practices like 'breath of fire' but gives so much horrid sociological and historical and philosophical information it's astounding..Indians lost because they smoked marijuana..dreams aren't helpful..ya gotta not eat sugar, caffeine etc. to make guru status..gotta get up at certain times in the morning and take cold showers? ... whew, all in all this book has an attractive cover but is an ugly piece of work...john

1-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
I have been practicing kundalini yoga for 5 years and hate to say anything bad about it, because I have benefitted so much from it.But this is a truly awful book.It is ANNOYING -- full of condescencing 6th grade reading level New Age chirpy cheerleader drivel. It is also a flood of things to do (with poor explanation of why other than "because Yogi Bhajan said so"), with little framework for navigating what works for YOU.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Un-Biased book.
After reading Operation Blue Star and other books relating to this general topic I finally came across one that was unbiased and took information from the actual 'militants'.This book will take you a while to read because of the way it was written, however I definetly recommend it to all those wishing to learn what is really going on in India.1-0 out of 5 stars Very Biased, Full of factual errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step into the Past
I bought this book expecting to read articles with a bigoted, mis-informed view of the Sikh culture and people from an anti-Sikh western viewpoint, or worse, pure ignorance.I was pleasantly surprised by the detailed and fascinating detail on the circumstances of Sikh people and life during the periods covered.I appreciate that there are gaps in coverage, but that adds to the authencity of the accounts and helps you formulate a view in your mind how the Sikh's could've changed from a small band of warriors under Bhanda Singh to the organised armies under Ranjit Singh. What I liked were the commentaries by the narrators who put the writer's circumstances into context before putting the writer's actual account before the reader. This helps the reader appreciate the limitations of the writer's perspective, and appreciate the actual gems of insight where they are to be found. The book also gives a glimpse into the past when it wasn't necessary to be 'man with turban' to be sikh, but there were other ways to be spiritually sikh without donning the appearance of a Khalsa sikh.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for Sikh History researchers
This book has got all that you need to avoid reinventing the wheel.A must for Sikh history researchers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of historical research
Well done to the authors and all who supported them in this long overdue project.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sikhism ....so so
I thought the book was ok.. very indepth on the history and formation of the Sikh religion.. less about social customs and modern sikhism.Small print and few in text definitions...had to thumb back to the glossery in the back of the book made this a time consuming and heavy read. Not for the armchair religious scholar.I thought the weird placing of the section on Sikh Art was a wrench in the works.. it also didn't direct you to the continuing page for the section I was in the middle of reading.Plus side good photos and the book was printed on nice glossy paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very solid short introduction
Sikhism is a tradition that often gets forgotten, and it's a great shame. Luckily this is changing and, thanks in large part to scholars such as Gurinder Singh Mann, Sikhism is now getting the attention it deserves. Professor Mann's new book is a very approachable yet academically accurate and informative introduction to Sikhism. Packing the complex religious history of the Sikhs into just over 100 pages isn't an easy task but Professor Mann is exceptionally well qualified and does the job well. In the end, the reader comes away with a very solid foundation of knowledge. Highly recommended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative but extremely biased in tone
This book gives you the basic overview of Sikh history.Unfortunately, at times the author seems more concerned with his opinion that no reasonable person could believe in any of this than he is with actually recording the facts. It's becoming a little too cliche to talk about a religion and to label its followers as blind to the realities of the world. This books seems more concerned with discounting Sikhism than exploring its dogma.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good discussion
This is a history of Sikhism. It covers the history, the religion, and the society, as well as covers the questions involved in determining authoritative information.1-0 out of 5 stars Biased, unobjective, not worth your money
McLeod, a Christian Missionary, in another attack Sikhism seeks to provide a more of an anthropological work colored in bias that seeks to diminish the stature of the Sikh religion. He does not refer to the Sikh scripture for authority. Can you imagine a general book on Christianity without the mention of the Holy Bible?McLeod rather define the Sikhs according to his bigoted viewpoint of a missionary than refer to the Sikh scripture and historic Sikh tradition. Please save your money and instead buy a more balanced and definitive work, The Sikhs, by Patwant Singh, which is available in both paperback and hardcover editions. You will thoroughly enjoy the riveting style of Patwant Singh.McLeod is not worth your time and money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very balanced commentary
I believe this is the best single commentary on the Pastorals available for the busy pastor or inquiring layman. It combines fresh scholarship with practicality and anecdote.I personally used this in my "devotional time" to supplement my own reading and found it to be an insightful and stimulating companion. It is a good starting place for the beginner to get a basic handle on the textual "problems" of the Pastorals, including a helpful and concise summary of the debate over Pauline authorship (which Liefeld holds to).Read more

I loved this book and have given it to several people as gifts. Most non-Muslims are fairly ignorant about Islam beyond what they read in the newspaper.I have read some books that give some of the factual information about Islam, but the beauty of this book is that it it is a window into the mind, heart, and soul of what it is to a Muslim woman. It is an engaging and easy to read story about the richness of Islam.I have quoted the part where Hasan says that growing up she did not hear that the sure path to Paradise was martyrdom. She heard from the sayings of the Prophet that the man who educates his daughter(s) is guaranteed Paradise.A nice corrective to the picture we get from the media which portrays only the most extremist and puritanical views. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Study of New Testament Missions Ever Written!
Eckhard Schnabel has produced a mammoth two volume discussion of the historical and theological foundations of the Christian missionary movement. The thesis of Early Christian Mission is that the movement began with the ministry of the historical Jesus and was perpetuated by the work of his earliest followers. A key point for Schnabel is that there was no active Jewish mission to Gentiles prior to the ministry of Jesus. He painstakingly expounds salient texts in the Hebrew Bible as well as texts from other relevant Jewish texts to show that even though there were eschatological promises of a general conversion of Gentiles to the God of Israel, that there was no active Jewish mission. In making this assertion, Schnabel has some significant exegetical obstacles, namely the book of Jonah (where Schnabel explains that Jonah was trying to get the Ninevites to repent, not to convert), and texts such as Isaiah 26:19 (which he regrettably overlooks), and Matthew 23:15 (where Schnabel is forced to admit that the text may speak of a uniquely Pharisaic ministry to reach non-Jews.) The bottom line is that strictly speaking, the Christian mission cannot be considered the first actively Jewish effort to reach Gentiles.
