Editorial Review

Is there such thing as a Western Taoist? Benjamin Hoff says there is, and this Taoist's favorite food is honey. Through brilliant and witty dialogue with the beloved Pooh-bear and his companions, the author of this smash bestseller explains with ease and aplomb that rather than being a distant and mysterious concept, Taoism is as near and practical to us as our morning breakfast bowl. Romp through the enchanting world of Winnie-the-Pooh while soaking up invaluable lessons on simplicity and natural living. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What An Awesome Book
I love this book. It isn't dogmatic and it doesn't so much alter one's thinking as it does challenge someone to pay attention to the nature of individual perception. Perception is not as it's claimed"everything" but it does go a long way toward shaping how a person views the world, and Pooh is simply a master of life. What else can you say?

5-0 out of 5 stars Tao of Pooh is simple and easy to understand
I read this book in high school as part of epistemology course. It is very easy to understand the basic principles of taoism through the ideas of pooh and his friends. I suggest this book for all philospohy students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Those who "mis-understand"
For those of you who are curious about this book and may be turned off by some of the "negative" comments, allow me to offer my humble opinion. I think that those people who did not like this book or felt it did not explain taoism, just really don't get the point. Taoism most certainly isn't something you seek and seek and then get frustrated at not finding, then angry, and then seek and seek. Taoism seen especially through Pooh's eyes and actions (or should I say "inactions") comes so near the mark to beginning to understand this ancient philosophy of harmonious existence on earth with the earth, and the duality of all things. I highly recommend this book for that open minded, non-judgemental, person open to the concept that indeed anything is possible...too many of us are so grounded in what we "absolutely know to be fact", when in reality anything in this universe is truly possible. Please explore this book on your path. I also highly recommend the companion book to this, The Te of Piglet, which delves ever more into taoism. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Translation for Our Times........
Simply the best translation of the Tao Te Ching available. Stephen Mitchell has done us all a great service by bringing this ages old book of wisdom to the modern era.

1-0 out of 5 stars stephen mitchell presents the tao te ching
The tao te ching is a great book, I'm not giving that a one star review, I'm giving mitchell's interpretation of it one star.As many other reviews have stated, he doesn't speak chinese, so this translation is comprised of his reading other peoples' translations and what he thinks it means. He then tries to modernize it and make it accessible to 21st century americans.I like the old world feel of this book, you don't need to change swords to nuclear warheads, I know what a sword is.At least though, this change makes sense, some chapters Mitchell changes so much, that the entire chapter loses its meaning.A couple chapters made no sense, so I went to the back of the book where he tells what parts he changed, and then I was able to understand exactly what Lao Tzu intended to say.Don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on reviewers
It's funny, people are giving it 1/5 because it isn't a "literal translation." It has to be the exact translated words by someone who is "scholared" for it to be worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars I find myself making better sex every day.
This is the first time I've felt compelled to write an Amazon book review. This book makes you want to have sex over and over again, I've really needed to take control of my eyaculation, and I now know the divine pleasure of truly satisfying a woman. I'm a 42year old man and I was beginning to worry that my performance was getting worse. This book showed me that performance does not just mean erection and orgasm, but much more. And I'm so grateful for that. I use it as a guide and as a counselor and that's the great thing about it: it can be put to several different uses to great effects! I've recommended it to all of my friends. I'll get more chances to keep giving it as a gift, aside from the fact that the techniques it presents have helped my relationshisp with partner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very impressed, sexy and pleased: the best
Well, people don't always like to hear you telling them that they should smarten up, so that's why I decided to write this review - easier, and the least I can do, This book is the perfect school for a balanced sexual life with fantastic ilustrations. Sex and the perfect lover has tips easy to follow and recommendations to experience pleasures with your partner and reach orgasm at the same time, has made us a happier and more confident couple. I learned many things that I was not aware of. And when I tried to experience these things with my partner it was excellent and very exciting for us both
5-0 out of 5 stars Sex and the Perfect Lover, become one
Reading Sex and the Perfect Lover by Iam Mabel, I was pleased to see that this is the first book that takes the ancient Kama Sutra and presents it in a step by step. This is a book of sexuality as a way of life, a text written in easy terms, usual to the Western ear. By far, the best Kamasutra and sex book I've been able to get all these years, and believe me I've bought more than 20 of this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty of Tao
This beautiful book introduced me to Tao.As a child, my father would let me page through it just to look at the gorgeous and simple photography. It wasn't until many years later that I actually began to read and appreciate the Tao Te Ching for the writing and significance. This subtle philosophy can be difficult to comprehend, but reading the text and performing your own analysis before delving into interpretations is a good beginning.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent translation
One of the best, most readable interpretations of Tao Te Ching I have come across over the years. The supporting illustrations are bold yet do not take away from the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hands Down - Best Interpretation
I've read over 20 interpretations of the Dao, and this is easily the clearest. The wording is very understandable for the Western mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Tao of Leadership: Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching Adapted for a New Age
Nice little book to keep on hand for those trying times.Has lots of very relevant points - you just have to stop, think and put it in context for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Lead Without It
I've used this book for over 10 years as my leadership support tool.As General Manager of a $200MM business, I need perspective and support on a daily basis - and Heider's book provides it. I love that the persective is NOT a management flavor of the week, but a view on leadership that stands the test of time.1-0 out of 5 stars Great Source, Bad Translation
I have read several translations of the Tao Te Ching and was very disappointed in this read. I feel as if much of the strengths from the original text are lost in this author?s choice of words and examples. This translation loses the beauty and appreciation of nature that the original texts focused on. (He refers to calculators and computers in some instances) I was also bothered by his addition of the Christian understanding of God as a character in his translations.Over all I really recommend finding a better translation than this to read if you are a first timer. (such as translation by Victor H. Mair) It is a bit more of a heavy read but caries over the interesting paradoxes that make the ancient document so intriguing.Read more

I love this little guide. It's so beautifully written and helps me return to the the really important aspects of parenting:honoring each child's individuality and letting go of control.I read one or two passages each morning to remind me that I have a choice in how I interact with my children. 5-0 out of 5 stars an organic aproach to understanding physics and the universe
This is a great book.My husband is an Engineering student. This book helped me understand a lot of the things he was learning about and trying to talk to me about from his day in class. It covers basic concepts like Newtonian/Classical Physics very clearly to help prepare the reader for the leaps away from classical physics and into the much more abstract concepts of unity and movement in the universe that come into play after Einstein. This book was very helpful to me in that I find the mathematical approach to the sciences tedious so I never got into this that much...I have a much more organic way of approaching learning.I was an art history major in collage and am used to learning about large concepts then exploring how they relate to things. The mathematical approach just never appealed to me.So I missed out a lot on just how cool physics is!I'm grateful to have a book that takes a comprehensive approach and made this information so accessible.I have a background in Zen, Buddhism, Budo, Christianity, and some Native American spirituality and have felt a connection between them all.I also grew up, oddly enough, rather synical so a book that takes a scientific approach to mystical understanding is just a phenomenal idea to me!This book along with "The Portable world Bible", and actively taking part in art, meditation, martial arts training, and ceremony really helped me find those connections and come to a much fuller level of appreciation for life and the physics within it.I got a great deal out of this book, not only in understanding science and my husband a bit better but in understanding the unity and movement of the nonphysical universe as well. All in all I give this book two big thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of History of Physics and Eastern Religions
For the college freshman who's struggling through classes in physics and philosophy, this is a book for you.I haven't read another book that summarizes the history of Western thoughts better, from Aristotle to Einstein. Also, Capra is the first author who finally cleared up for me all the different kinds of Buddhism and the reason behind the multiple gods in Hinduism.Capra is obviously a brilliant lecturer who has done an exhaustive analyses of the history of Western/Eastern philosophies as well as Phyics. His work is easy to read and follow, and Capra guides the reader through his very enjoyable and informative arguments on how the advanced physics and eastern thoughts converge at the most abstract conceptual level.
4-0 out of 5 stars A broader perspective for a new path in life
Essentially the trailhead for me on my best and happiest path to an understanding of life. After reading the "Tao of...", I knew I wanted a consilience between all religions, science and philosophical thought. Now after more than a decade, thanks to Capra I have found that joy and peace. With my understanding now, there are no conflicts, no frustrations, even with the bipolar hypocracies of Christian beliefs.I highly recommend that all begin their Tao and as with Joseph Campbell, "find their Bliss." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This very positive attitude towards Divine life help is good.
The most prominent idea I came away with from reading this version of the I Ching is 'not to give up on anyone'; remain open minded and accepting. One never knows when, but that the good will happen is reassuring.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easier I Ching
This is a great version of the I Ching!Carol Anthony takes the sometimes difficult to understand messages of the I Ching and turns them into plain english.Very good for beginners, or for anyone who wishes to get the full message of the I Ching without doing all the interpretation.

5-0 out of 5 stars I-Ching is KING
I have been consulting the sage, through this book for 7 years and have sporatically used other texts in addition. This text wipes them all out. It is well written and makes sense.

4-0 out of 5 stars On Second Thought
I read this book shortly after reading the Tao of Pooh 3+ years ago, which I absolutely loved and continue to loan to friends and family when I see them struggling. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great book on how to use food for healing
gThe Tao of Nutritionh is a food therapy guide based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which looks at food in a slightly different way from Western nutrition. The book is divided into 5 main sections.Section 1 very briefly outlines the theory including yin and yang, the main organs of the body, the 5 elements and 5 tastes, causes of diseases, prevention of diseases and a guideline for a balanced diet based on a pyramid (which is not unlike that used in macrobiotics).Section 2 is a list of foods including detail on both the energetics (i.e. which of the 5 tastes the food has, as well as whether it has a cooling, warming or moistening tendency) and healing aspects (such as clearing heat, removing dampness, lubricating the lungs, strengthening the heart etc.) of each food.Section 3 gives tips on which foods can help various health conditions such as bronchitis, eczema and headaches.Section 4 offers vegetarian recipes.Section 5 offers a simple meal plan.4-0 out of 5 stars An great guide for good health and healing

5-0 out of 5 stars the Chuang tzu
One trusts this is probably the best English translation there is of the Chuang Tzu. The Chuang tzu has a unique place in the world of spiritual writings; it breathes the air of freedom like nothing else. Not knowing ancient Chinese, however, the only thing I can say is that I am very happy with this translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BestAvailable Translation Of This Toaist Classic
Though Burton Watson's translation comes a close second, this version is the absolute best English translation I have found.Mair includes the "rhyming prose" the poetry and lots of the zaniness that somehow gets passed over in other translations. For those wishing to have more notes Mair generously refers them to his writings in the Sino-Platonic Papers.Mair is second to none in his understanding of archaic Chinese and takes us back to the truly revolutionary collection of writings that Chuang Tzu really is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb translation but with a lack of notes
It's a fresh and scholarly translation, but also potentially controversial, since a few sections of the text have been deleted (even from the Inner Chapters). The deletions are not noted in the main text (the general reader will be unaware of them) or clearly explained. They can be found in the "Deleted Passages" appendix at the end of the book. Some translations are unconventional, like "look after your parents" (Watson) in the beginnig of chapter 3, is translated by Victor Mair as "Nourish your inmost viscera"; it would be interesting to know why. I would look forward to another edition with notes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I got this book based on my Buddhist teacher's advice to do so.I found it hard to follow and unintelligible in spots. However, it could be my own understanding of it also. This kind of book is similar to other esoteric teachings like the Rosicrucian handbook.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly A great Read
The translation of the book is more than worth the price. With the commentary and explanation of the terms it exceeds the price paid. The subject matter and the commentary by Jung makes it pricless. I am familiar with many meditation styles and i must say this is a gem. I would recommend that before this work is done one has trained several years in the magical arts, the worker should at least be over thirty and has a family. Also a working knowledge of chi kung or tai chi should be had. Otherwise the treasure gained will not be as grand or the work never begun properly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Penetrating Text and Commentary by Jung
A very interesting and meaningful book to say the least. And like Jung, gratitude must be given Richard Wilhelm for his insight in the East and translation of the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars not an easy read but well worth the effort
Mantak Chia is a master who gives detailed descriptions of the how-to of moving sexual energy. The methods he proposes are very disciplined and therefore work best for people who like structure and have lots of patience and self-motivation. This book is also good for individuals not in relationship, because so much of the work is done on one's own. Because Chia's work derives from the Taoist tradition (as opposed to Tantric), there is more emphasis on the physical and practical than the mystical and emotional aspects of the work.

5-0 out of 5 stars needed gap filler in my chi kung training.
excelant study guide...i have a good strong understanding of chi kung, i've been teaching myself from books and practicing for years now. for anyone who doesn't know chi kung is the stuff that the famous 1 inch punch is made of. some books i studied from that i recomend to study allong with this one is , tai chi classics, qigong for health and martial arts by dr. yang jwing ming and any others by that author. i have read at least 20 or more others on the subject. almost all the titles i've read leave out sex entirely and at least a couple say not to practice chi kung with in 24 hours of sex but none give any info on why or any hints as to why. i have read a good handfull of books on tantra and haven't found this type of info available. after stumbling onto this book i bought it immediatly, it was a much needed gap filler in my training that i will cherrish for years. i read the book slowly and carefully then i started practicing in the next couple days. i took me only that long to reap the bennifits, i went from an occasional strong orgasm a consistant strong orgasm every time. using the "big draw" most of my orgasms are so strong that i nearly faint and my body is left tingeling. i don't think this would be so, accept that i've been practicing chi kung and other meditations for years already that these tecniques were easily addapted. the bit on multiple orgasms is quite real. i highly recomend this book for anyone who takes their love life, meditation, and chi kung serously. i would have to agree with the other couple reviews that say that this type of info could be "potentialy" dangerous. i've studied other titles such as the "encyclopedia of dim mak" by by erle montaigue and wally simpson and am just now starting to study "a manual of accupuncture" and i know that your chi systems demand allot of respect. nonetheless if you practice progressively, carefully and don't try to force your chi but rather allow your self to become aware of it, you'll find that the information in this book is highly valuable. that is why i recomend that you study this book withthe book "tai chi classics"this title instructs you how to "cultivate" your awareness and controle of your chi properly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bit unpolished, but still a classic
In some ways Chia's earlier work (including this book) is purer than his more recent volumes. This book's extensive background about sacred sexuality makes it especially worthwhile for interested readers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Jolan Chang!
If you follow the instructions in this book, you will never need anymore "sexpert's" advice, nor will you ever even consider taking "Viagra".
3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for introducing someone interested in the Tao
I found it ok to give the reader an idea of the Tao of love and sex on a physical level, but not much in regards to how the Tao can be used for a higher spiritual purpose. The book seems to entirely focus on how to keep a woman sexually satisfied and how a person practicing the Tao can have much better health and increase lifespan. The book doesn't give much information about from a womans perspective but mainly from a male perspective and how physically beneficial it is for men.The book makes the assumption that woman are not sexually satisfied unless they have lots of orgasms, and the focus for the male is to retain the seed and engage his partner is lustful sex. The book mentions the use of a locking method to help a male from ejaculating but doesn't give specifics on how to actually do it and how to practice it (unlike Mantak Chia - cultivating male sexual energy).I found Mantak Chia books better in showing how the Tao is used as a spiritual path and also lots of practices to buildup and maintain sexual energy and other practical topics such as external lock, internal lock, sacrum and cranial pumps, power lock, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to turning sex into love...
Jolan Chang's and the chinese vision of love is a truly beautiful thing to behold.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Way that can be spoken of is not the constant Way..."
TAO TE CHING is ascribed to Lao-Tzu ("The Old Boy"), an approximate contemporary of Confucius, who when asked to summarize his own philosophy, produced this incredible little volume before vanishing into the trackless wastes of central Asia. Long considered by Westerners to be the very essence of Oriental inscrutability, TAO TE CHING attempts to quantify the immeasurable and speak the ineffable. The Old Boy is far less opaque than he is accused of being; it is simply that human language is too limited to concretize the ideas of TAO TE CHING. Many people have attempted to describe the Tao (pronounced "Dow" or "Taw" depending on the local dialect). No one has yet succeeded. The mere act of description is a delimitation. Conceptually linked to flowing water or a candle flame, Tao is the natural order of things (but even that fails to suffice). The Tao, like Quantum Physics, must be grasped intuitively.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the possible alternatives to a religion.
Tao Te Ching is not only a philosophical outlook on life, it is also a religious philosophy. Written around 4th and 5th centuries BCE, Tao Te Ching gives us the glimpse of the ancient non-Western philosophy, with D.C. Lau's in-depth introduction, it is a very inspiring and eye-opening read. The translation captures the essence of the work and gives the reader the ability to truly appreciate it. One of the main topics of the Tao Te Ching is the idea of non-action. "One who knows does not speak; one who speaks does not know", it is kind of an intellectual trap trying to write this review with the Tao philosophy in mind. If you know then do not teach, if you are ruler then rule as less as possible, if you are warrior then do not fight, etc. These examples are all representatives of non-action attitudes presented in Tao Te Ching. The best way to appreciate this work is to stop reading this review and purchase the book and be amazed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Translation (uncertain about author's introduction though)
I'm not into Eastern philosophy to the point where I take visits to Buddhist temples and practice meditation on a daily basis. However, being a Westerner, I do believe Eastern philosophy is very interesting, intriguing, and very applicable to aspects of everyday life, especially in the life of us "hustle-n-bustle," constantly-on-the-go Westerners. A lot of Eastern philosophy just makes sense, as much as it is common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cherish this book
I do not have an elaborate in-depth comparison of this work to other Tao Teh Ching translations.I merely have my own perspective with this one.
3-0 out of 5 stars ok conditions
the book was in ok conditions, i have bought used books in better conditions, but i can't really complaint because is good enough to read it just fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars It takes time
The Hua Hu Ching portion of the book is self explanatory. The Tao Teh Ching can be read and applied at any level. If you are truly looking for some assistance then I recommend 8000 Years of Wisdom, books 1 and 2, by Master Ni.Each chapter of the Tao Teh Ching is read and then expanded upon by Master Ni, with questions from students. Some people will like this and some will not. What is important, is to find what works for YOU and aligns with YOU. ...
