5-0 out of 5 stars Transformational
As a pastor, I have read many books on spiritual development and growth. As a Christian seeking to grow spiritually, I have read even more.Like a previous reviewer, I would place this book on par with Richard Foster or Dallas Willard--perhaps even higher because it is so very accessible.I am particularly taken with the way in which the author links a person's natural desires with his or her best choice of disciplines. As all Christians know, it is easier to read about spiritual disciplines than practice them, and I have certainly been guilty of that. However, in the weeks since I bought Calhoun's book, I have read very little.Rather, I have been PRACTICING.And that says it all.Phenomenal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Staying Under the Dove
If you want to "keep company with Jesus", Adele Calhoun points the way, through classic and modern spiritual disciplines. The disciplines, she explains, can give God's Holy Spirit opportunity to hover over our hearts-- just as he hovered dove-like over the waters at creation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Synthesis of the Spiritual Disciplines
As a chaplain in hospice care and for a professional sports team I am always looking for books that synthesize larger topics or "weightier" works and bring practical applications to the forefront.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ladies and Their Hats
Coming from a hat wearing tradition, I fully appreciated "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats".My hat was a pill box a la Jacqueline Kennedy which shows how old I am.Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the photographs and the women's stories.Hat wearing is a fine tradition and very much a part of Black culture that Michael Cunningham has captured in all its glory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crowns truly deserves a Crown
We are performing the play Crowns here at the Unicorn Theatre here in Kansas City, MO as I write my review. It has been sold out every night and we had to add another week and it is sold out as well. I play the part of Mother Shaw. I have to say that before the play I was not one who wore hats but NOW!!!!!. The lines we say come directly from the book. This book is the best read I have come across in a long time. I had to order it here on Amazon because all the book stores in KC are sold out!! They love the play and they love the book. A book that all black women ( especially those of us who grew up in the church) can identify. We have all seen a Mother Shaw, Wanda, Jeanette and Mabel in the church wearing their hats. Regina Taylor really hit the nail on the head. This is one role that I can truly say I have enjoyed playing. God bless you Regina and keep them coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice!
This book brings back memories of being a young girl and seeing the church ladies entering the church wearing those extraordinary hats. Being blond and fair didn't stop me from mingling among the congregation just to see the hats and hear the singing. The hats in this book are so familiar. The stories are new and give life to those hats. This book would make an excellent gift. ... Read more

THIS BOOK WAS SO GREAT I READ IT IN ONE DAY AND COULD NOT WAIT TO GO TO MASS TO PUT MY KNOWLEDGE TO USE.I LEARNED MORE ABOUT MY RELIGION FROM THIS BOOK THEN I DID IN A LIFETIME.I WENT THROUGH ALL OF THE MOTIONS IN CHURCH NOT KNOWING WHY I DID THEM, THEN I BOUGHT THIS BOOK AND NOW I AM AWARE OF MY EVERY MOVE AND WHY I AM DOING THOSE ACTIONS.HOW MORE BEAUTIFUL MASS IS TO ME NOW, NOW THAT I KNOW THE REASON FOR EVERY MOVE.I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and Understand
as a convert, I found this book to answer almost all my questions. It helped me to understand mass on my terms. I would definitly recommend this for RCIA students and anyone else interested in the learning process. The only addition I would make is to incorporate where latin might be spoken or prayed during mass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mass is more than enjoyable

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe without solid facts...
The Committee of 300 is an interesting read and I enjoyed the thorough breakdown of socio-political groups, organizations, etc. and their hierarchy. There is probably some truth there. But the author makes some allegations that are lacking in verifiable facts and belie a not-so-subtle political axe to grind. For example, the mass murders of 150,000 Iraqi troops (tavelling under a white flag of truce...) ordered by President Bush during the first Gulf War?The burying alive of 12,000 Iraqi troops again by the order of President Bush?Since the book was written prior to the Clinton presidency, it's hard to say if the author is merely anti-republican or just doesn't like the Bush family. There are only a few non-text pages in the book (again no documentation to support his assertions...) but one of them has a nice graphic of the hierarchy of the Masons which appears to be reprinted from an mid-20th century book. Given a choice, I would not have bought this book again.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting set of events
The author is definitely a man of his time with use of words such as negroe, hispositive stance on nuclear energy, his sympathy for the Boers war against the wealthy imperialist and not the indigenous peoplesfor whom the land was stolen , his belief that Bayard Rustin is still head of organizations, his not calling Cecil Rhodes thegenocidal maniac that he was.In addition there is no call by the author to have repairs made to descendents of slaves for which most wealthyfamilies of America and England benefited according to Mr. Coleman .However despite that , very relevant points are made anda considerable amount of events discussed have come to pass, are currently happening and or measures are put in place so that some events will present themselves soon. The author seemingly put great detail and thought in telling the tale that is told and appears to be very compassionate, knowledgeable, forthcoming with his variety of information.I would very much like to know what happened in his life that would make an ex MI6 agent spill the beans.
4-0 out of 5 stars Committee of 300
I understand that Dr. Coleman didn't completely document his work. Most likely Dr. Coleman assumed, and shouldn't have, that most of the readers would have already been schooled in the remedial works of the globalists in our world. Not the least of which is the Council On Foreign Relations. The CFR is conspiracy hidden in plain sight and you have to have the brain the size of a pea to miss it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small group training manual
Our congregation has used Bill Donahue's Leading Life-Changing Small Groups as our primary reference manual for training small group leaders for over 5 years. It gets right to the heart of the organization and leadership issues needed for successful ministry. It is also an excellent reference for avoiding and resolving problems that may occur as people get to know one another.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reading In a Decade
I thought that I knew a lot about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but this book has really opened up to me his true character. As I read his precious speeches, articles and books I am so happy that I purchased this compilation of Dr. Kings' works and I have been given a special glimpse into the life of such a genuine and extraordinary individual.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Collection
A Testament of Hope is indispensible for a complete understanding of MLK Jr. the man. He was so much more than a monolithic figure of the Civil Rights movement. He was a pastor, theologian, philosopher, diplomat, husband, and father. A Testament of Hope helps the reader to grasp the multifaceted life of this icon of the twentieth century. This book lets the reader into the very human life of MLK Jr. Nowhere have I discovered a more cogent explanation of passive resistance than in the various speeches and essays contained in this book. If you are engaged in the struggle for civil rights or if you seek to better understand modern humanity more completely add this book to your library and consult it often.

I've studied the works of Dr. King since I was 7 years old, and now my 7 year old is studying him with great interest.I figured this book (a gift) would be a good summation of his career instead of the other half dozen individual books I have in my library.Well, as with his other work, there are many, many typographical errors.I feel that a man of his education would be offended to see his works corroded by half-assed spell checking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
This was the first book I bought on Asatru. It describes all the basics of the religion like ethics, orlog, the gods and goddesses, etc. This would be the book to give to family members or friends who are unfamiliar with your beliefs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great overview
This little book is very direct and to the point. It goes over alot of main topics which are very essential to Asatru: what Asatru is and is not, the Nine Noble Virtues, ethics, Orlog, Frith, oaths, a basic introduction to the Gods and Goddesses, the Blots, ceremonies, and even a little bit about the runes and different types of magic. He gives very good modern day examples, focusing less on abstract concepts and more on how one can apply them and really "live" Asatru, as the title says.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Review of Asatru
This book, although it does not delve very deeply into the religion, does give a good overview of the belief system of Asatru. The author claims only to give the reader ideas for their own research.A great jumping off point for the beginner. Also a wonderful resource for those who are exploring the many religions out there.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Benedictine Books
A practical, hands-on and realistic approach to the Rule of Saint Benedict. In true Benedictine spirit it is applicable to all people within all situations, yet is steeped within the monastic tradition. A useful and truly useable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of useful tools, practices, and explanations, ....
As an Oblate of St. Benedict I have read many books on the Rule of Benedict. This is the most useful book on the Rule that I have read in several years.Jane Tomaine helps us understand the Rule of Benedict as it applies to our daily lives in the 21st Century. She begins by relating the Rule of Benedict to a foundation of Christian faith/life... our Baptismal Covenant.Regardless of your specific denomination, age, or faith tradition, you are likely to find a wealth of useful tools, practices, and explanations... of ways to seek (and establish) a fresh, consistent, awareness of God in your everyday life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical wisdom for everyday life
This book thoroughly lives up to its title. As a practical "how to" manual, it offers an amazing array of tools useful in very ordinary situations. Furthermore, it is firmly based on monastic tradition and excel-lent literature on the Rule of Benedict, as well as Tomaine's own life experience. Her interpretation of Benedictine obedience is a good example of her practical yet deeply spiritual approach: "Obedience is not what we expect from others. Obedience is what we do ourselves for others." Regarding stability she writes: "God in Christ is our Rock and as Christians, we want to put on Christ and become a rock too. We want to have a firm and solid center at the core of our being, so that we can withstand the unpredictability and transience of our world." A good bibliography adds to the value of the book for anyone interested in Benedict's 1500-year old Rule as a resource for living sanely in today's world.Sr. Lenora Black, OSB ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reliable Guide
Dr. Hamilton was my Preaching teacher in seminary. In fact I was a visiting student and I wanted to have a different academic experience. Thus I ended up sitting in his class. At first I was a little skeptical of the teacher that teaches out of his own book. Nonetheless, by the end of the semester my preaching improved considerably due to the "Homelitical Handbook." Five years after taking his class I find myself going back to his book for guidance. I find the "Homelitical Handbook" not only a reliable preaching guide, but also a clear and honest approach for the task of preaching to the avid homeletician. Its challenging simplicity helped me improve and polish my homelitical skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars A guidebook for the passionate
Donald Hamilton's Homiletical Handbook is one of a vast library of books which treat the subject of preaching. In his own introduction, Hamilton admits that although there is a virtual army of books on preaching, there are very few which are actually helpful in the task. Many handbooks are based on faulty views of scripture, weak hermeneutics, or a level of criticism which makes practical application impossible.Others offer valuable insight into theory and theology, but do not address the practical aspects of the preaching act. With this in mind, Hamilton honestly states that his handbook is not meant to address every aspect and detail of the "preaching task."It is also not meant to teach the art of sermon delivery.Instead, Homiletical Handbook is meant to deal with homiletics, or the science of preaching. An introductory treatment, this book is meant for beginning preaching students. Its intent is to spur both future and beginning preachers into an informed passion for the science of proper hermeneutics. He is brilliantly successful!! ... Read more

Vladimir Lossky's "Mystical Theology' is one of the most profound books ever written about Christianity. It is a superb volume for armchair theologians, clerics of every stripe, those seeking a greater understanding of God in Trinity and human nature, and those wishing a lucid explanation of the differences between the Holy Orthodox Church and more occidental, rational, and secular forms of Christianity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Parenting in the Pew
Parenting in the Pew is part memoir and part practical theology as a pastor's wife grapples with issues regarding children and the public worship service. For individuals and churches who are questioning participating in children's ministry programs through elementary school, Parenting in the Pew will provide food for thought and conviction that it is good, right and worthwhile for children to worship with their parents.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parenting in the Pew: Guiding Your Children into the Joy of Worship
This book is full of fun and helpful suggestions for parents who love worship and want to share their worship experience with their children (toddlers to teens). I think her suggestions can easily cross a variety of worship styles. As a parent of grown sons, she can look back at the struggles and see the fruit that remained. I found her chapter on the sacraments particularly thought-provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Book
One of the perennial issues all parents have to deal with is how to effectively train their children to participate in the morning/evening worship service. This can be one of the most embarrassing seasons in any parents life. But it is also one of the most important seasons in the life of your child as they learn to participate in the right worship of God among congregation of the redeemed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
A wonderful approach to making art for sanctuaries, not the "bumper sticker on fabric" approach favored by so many church banner books. Some of the designs are dated, but the text will give you something to chew on.For example, she doesn't look favorably on the idea of lavish floral arrangements for altars every Sunday, saying that the altar is supposed to be a sacred space, not a florist's display window. At my church, I adapted one of her ideas using origami cranes as pieces to form a much bigger design suspended over the altar. It was hugely appreciated by the congregants of my liberal church.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book
This book will inspire you to really think about liturgical art in terms of spiritual reflection and growth, not just decoration.Ms. Chinn's work is inspiring and awesome. My only complaint was that there aren't many examples of projects in small worship spaces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An historic perspective (by a non-mason)
Prof. Stevenson, a non-mason, has stumbled upon freemasonry while specialising in the history of the Scottish covenanters. He adds academic structure and his formidable historic knowledge to the unwritten part of Scottish masonry, - an oral tradition of memorized texts and a rich variety of lodge rituals, -way before George I's (a Hanoverian who spoke no English) attempt in 1717 to create a system of control by establishing the Grand Lodge of England. Mr. Stevenson may be forgiven for not understanding masonic imagery, however he has given us a well presented insight into Scottish masonry. His impressive work sets new standards in masonic history, based on verifiable and reproducable evidence rather than on wishful thinking. A highly recommendable book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Half the story, and well done!
This well-researched and (necessarily) somewhat-speculative work covers the sustainment of Freemasonry in Scotland in the time just before Masonry went public in 1717. The title is less accurate than the subtitle, however, for it creates more questions than it answers. For convincing speculation on the actual origins of Freemasonry (and one that fits well before this book if one will take William Schaw as patron and not creator of the Craft), read "Born in Blood" by John J. Robinson.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last! Some Factual Pre-1717 Masonic History!
The question of Freemasonry's origins and history prior to the establishment of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717 is such a morass of speculation, supposition, and wishful thinking that professional historians- Stevenson included - feel the need to justify their researches in thissubject lest they be tainted by its disrepute among their fellows. Againstsuch a background this book really stands out. Stevenson bases his researchon actual records of almost a hundred Scottish Masonic lodges that datefrom the 1600's, along with municipal records, other guilds' records, diaries, and royal statutes.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story, poor theology
This story written about the author's experience is excellent. The people he encounters and their strange world make for a fascinating read. However, as a Christian it was difficult for me to read accounts of people who are so obviously misguided in their faith.Purposely taking up venomous snakes, drinking poison and passing through fire is in frank opposition to Biblical teachings about not "testing God".In fact, the verses upon which the main characters have built their theology are considered by most to be too controversial for deriving unique doctrinal stands in that they do not appear in the oldest manuscripts of Mark's gospel.(Research Mark 16.)
5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing piece of journalism on a freaked-out topic
What a cool book.I mean...wow.
2-0 out of 5 stars A GENUINE DISSAPOINTMENT
I can't believe this book was a finalist for the National Book Award! Although it was well written in the sense of grammar and vocabulary, it was not an effective vehicle to introduce readers to the subject. I live in Appalachia, and I feel this book in some way demeans the practices of these persons religion. It starts out with a reporter covering a murder trial where a "snake handler" forces his wife to be bitten in the hopes that she will die so he can have another woman. I would have loved the court dialog and more of a background of the alleged "crime."I definitely would have found more background information on the snake handlers interesting, and also more information about the strychnine; where they get it, how they know ratio to mix with water, etc. Strychnine from churches around my home has been found to be "non-lethal" doses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!!!To Coin A Phrase, Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover!!!
I have the original version of this book, the one with the picture of the Broomstick Babe on the cover.I wasn't willing to pay full price for this book because of the picture, so bought it at my local Half-Price Books for a few dollars.Because of the picture, as well as Ms. RavenWolf's reputation, I really didn't expect much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Okay...So are we Wiccan or Catholic?
Wow! I just read a few reviews on here for this book and lets just say that I am ashamed to call myself apart of the Wiccan Religion right now! I have never been so humiliated before! People think this book is bad...its not real witchcraft...shes "fluffy"...Gardnarian Tradion is the ONLY way...you SHOULD read THESE authors and no others...is this sounding familiar? Unfortunatly, YES! People get so wound up in these so called "Witch Wars" that Wicca, once a religion that promoted "PERSONAL FREEDOM" to suit YOUR practice to YOUR needs is being transformed into a dogmatic "ONE WAY RELIGION". I was raised Catholic, hated the dogma and constant fear, To Ride a Silver Broomstick was my first book on The Craft given to me by my Wiccan girlfriend in High School. Silver showed me the way!
5-0 out of 5 stars I definately reccomend this book!
Silver delves into so many things I love. I guess my only regret is the lack of pre-outlined ritauls. I read this after TeenWitch and I think that that's her "fluffiest" book. This is so good and it rounded it out very nicely. I use both books when doing rituals, spells, and meditations, and even did the TeenSeeker ritual outlined in TeenWitch. Buy this book, and you will forever understand. ... Read more
