Ladies and Their Hats
Coming from a hat wearing tradition, I fully appreciated "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats".My hat was a pill box a la Jacqueline Kennedy which shows how old I am.Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the photographs and the women's stories.Hat wearing is a fine tradition and very much a part of Black culture that Michael Cunningham has captured in all its glory.

Crowns truly deserves a Crown
We are performing the play Crowns here at the Unicorn Theatre here in Kansas City, MO as I write my review. It has been sold out every night and we had to add another week and it is sold out as well. I play the part of Mother Shaw. I have to say that before the play I was not one who wore hats but NOW!!!!!. The lines we say come directly from the book. This book is the best read I have come across in a long time. I had to order it here on Amazon because all the book stores in KC are sold out!! They love the play and they love the book. A book that all black women ( especially those of us who grew up in the church) can identify. We have all seen a Mother Shaw, Wanda, Jeanette and Mabel in the church wearing their hats. Regina Taylor really hit the nail on the head. This is one role that I can truly say I have enjoyed playing. God bless you Regina and keep them coming!

An excellent choice!
This book brings back memories of being a young girl and seeing the church ladies entering the church wearing those extraordinary hats. Being blond and fair didn't stop me from mingling among the congregation just to see the hats and hear the singing. The Best Reading In a Decade
I thought that I knew a lot about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but this book has really opened up to me his true character. As I read his precious speeches, articles and books I am so happy that I purchased this compilation of Dr. Kings' works and I have been given a special glimpse into the life of such a genuine and extraordinary individual.

An Indispensible Collection
A Testament of Hope is indispensible for a complete understanding of MLK Jr. the man. He was so much more than a monolithic figure of the Civil Rights movement. He was a pastor, theologian, philosopher, diplomat, husband, and father. A Testament of Hope helps the reader to grasp the multifaceted life of this icon of the twentieth century. This book lets the reader into the very human life of MLK Jr. Nowhere have I discovered a more cogent explanation of passive resistance than in the various speeches and essays contained in this book. If you are engaged in the struggle for civil rights or if you seek to better understand modern humanity more completely add this book to your library and consult it often.

I've studied the works of Dr. King since I was 7 years old, and now my 7 year old is studying him with great interest.I figured this book (a gift) would be a good summation of his career instead of the other half dozen individual books I have in my library.Well, as with his other work, there are many, many typographical errors.I feel that a man of his education would be offended to see his works corroded by half-assed spell checking. ... A very good resource
The myth of genesis and exodus and its modern untrue historical perpetuations by the current self appointed custodians of Christianity, Judaism and Islam are examined and analyzed in this 74 paged document.The author sets the record straight by linking all three to their Afrikanpagan origins and with real individuals, making historical corrections where they are due.For example there are comparisons, betweenwhat was allegedly said by King Solomon and what was actually written by Amenemope, and comparison between the biblical ten commandments with the actual written 147. There are dates along with mapping diagrams showing the approximate time of genesis and exodus and what would have occurred in truth.In addition, by showing that all involved during the alleged mass movements and cultural war fares were of Afrikan tribal descent,theauthor shows that biblicalevents that occurred were mostly Afrikan continentalhistory, and spiritual allegory. Strength to Do Something requires the power and wisdom of love...
In 1983 I entered teaching in West Virginia and recieved this book as a present from one of my teachers. In two years I moved to South Central to teach at 93rd Street School then into the Salinas valley and now in Oxnard.It has proved itself to be of great use to a teacher. I say this by way of explaining that as an elementary teacher, one working with a variety of settings, children, cultures, families, many kinds of educational issues I've come to believe that the book King wrote, this book, is a true helpmate to anyone trying to deal with inequity and injustice.Teaching is an act that requires a very deep understanding of who you are, your strengths, purpose, and this volume supports the evolution of your social conscious. For me the text allowed me to solidify who I am as a teacher and why I do what I do. One example might be the difficult job it is to teach in schools under assault for doing poorly, seemingly being deconstructed by politics without enough valid insight into ways to guide real improvement and coming up against ignorance in many forms-including the disparity in economic means permitted in America. It's not easy to teach children with vast dental decay, families out of work and watch a nation laud this as positive "welfare reform" when stranding these children in worse fixes. Sometimes I find it infinitly difficult to love my neighbor,well, my voucher loving neighbor, or even find commonality with those in million dollar homes feeling botox might make them both more appealing and more interesting.The child as a commodity construct which is now prevelent in educational dialog, among many other kinds of views, I find difficult to separate from the individuals telling me( in often rude and hurtful ways) that my efforts educationally are a failure and that schools don't work. In my world it's a constant Lou Dobbs immigration rant that somehow is hiding vaguely words that really seem to be saying something else. I tire of watching the reality of racism, classism acted out in the lives of children-and this is a fatigue that easily becomes anger-King speaks to this.... I find myself lacking the strength to love positions taken by those that really don't know what they are talking about, and don't care other than for personal advantaging anyway.... There is something truely fascinating about having a book that describes both your situation and your feelings as well as frames this into affective forward action-King can give you individual empowerment quite readily.And he can help you address your mindset. And that in this world of mine is a beautiful thing.I frame my work with principles that are able to outweigh the personal likes and dislikes levels...so I bring to school dealings my thoughts that I am there to help Anthony be the best Anthony he can be...not to condemn Anthony to my judgement about him. Let us say then King's is an active lexicon and this volume is insightful for someone wishing to everyday face injustice and difficulty with positive reaction and action. For me as a person I find the book more helpful than any I ever had.
Life changing
Timeless. As relevant now as what it was when it was written. Addresses the issues of hate and indifference and argues that the solution is love. Love does sound all too simplistic but it is one of the hardest things to face but its rewards are beyond words.

GET THIS and GIVE THIS to your favorite women:)
This is my FAVORITE book by Iyanla Vanzant because of:It's size(small enough for your tiny purse), its lack of preach-i-ness and how the index is organized by subject. I feel its a synopsis of all the subjects covered in her other books.I also feel the book is applicable to women of ALL cultures.You can use it as a daily guide or you can use the index to find a subject for which you could use guidance.

A great book for daily reflection
I can not express how insightful and helpful this book is! It really makes you look deep into the reason(s) why you thought you needed a book of affirmations in the first place. This book is perfect for those "why me" and "I really can't take any more" moments when you feel like life, and everything in it, needs to give you a break. If you're a woman experiencing a lot of change in your life and it seems like you just can't handle another crisis (or is it a crisis afterall?), this is the book for you. I carry it in my purse!

Touches a Point
Each time my spirt is down, or I'm going through a situation, I turn to this book.I hold the book in my right hand by its spine, fan the pages with my left hand to stop at randum. The passages I've read, I have felt its deep spirtual feeling and I understand its meaning.Then I reflect on my situation and the passage fits.It helps me to understanding whats going on.It uplifts my spirit to deal with my situation.It give me insight to view my problem from a different angle.It also assures me that what I am currently going through will end.I will get through it.In my view, its a powerfull book.I have read several other books by Iyanla, even watched her talk show (sorry that went off the air), but like the bible, I keep Faith In The Valley near by. ... A waste of time
I am surprised by the glowing reviews posted because I found the book shallow, incomplete and devoid of any useful detail.Of course the price is very low, but paying anything for something that has no value is no bargain.
a beautiful to the point book.... A MUST HAVE.
this small pamphlet of information is very helpful. it points out the first typed bible, first bible written in english and also bibles that were written to satisfy certain kings and a lot of other good points. it points out the many bibles that were printed in the u.s. which were 16 different versiions. i feel sorry for christians and catholics. see this pamphlet of information just re-affirms for me to keep following my african roots in religion. i wonder what religion this author is. i doubt chrisitian. i believe these bibles in america change so often because they have to always trick or keep the next generation away from the truth. because of authors like dr. ben and books such as this i can easily pick out everything african out of the bible and place it in my heart. although im not christian or muslim or any thing thats popular in religion, i read the bible to pluck all black ancient history formy research. i also read the bible because most christians and catholics dont and i love to know more than they do about their own religoin and i usually put christian and catholics in their place using their own book against them. with books such as this one with the symbol of life on the cover, now i see why black celebs such as chuck d., erika bahdu, etc have used the symbol of life (african cross) on their album covers. its all african. i love dr. ben and all black man who looked death in the face and still brought forth this valuable information of truth to you and i. we all know blacm men were getting killed all the time for printing the truth. i love dr. ben for not being afraid of using freedom of speech especially durning his time in the earlier 1900's when we were really being lynched an killed just because we wanted human rights. Dr. Ben has given us a simple, straight to the point summary on what scholars should know on Bibical History. For those who think that he has a secret agenda, reader know that Dr. Ben is indeed a Jew.Judaism practicers were originally all Africans.This could be understood if you are aware that Judaism springs from Egypt, wich is in Africa. Wisdom, Inspiration, & Reflection
Maya Angelou is a prolific writer, and this book is more proof of that. This book was given to me by Maureen A. Fay, during her final year as President of the University of Detroit Mercy, my alma mater.

Wonderful Life Living Spirtual Knowledge
The author is as soulful and mysterious as the cosmic -mathematical -spirituality written on the pages of this book.I had the pleasure of meeting him in person and knew I had to seek further into what he had to say.One of the more important messages being that since all systems are coded, it is imperative for groupsof African descent to love the study of their languages, to prove their scientific capacity in order to avoid yesterdays biased blunders. The cosmology is explained in graphic form in the first chapter for those ofus who need visuals to understand, andit is plain enough for the novice to comprehend.There is an awesome chapter on Law and Crime as it relates to cosmic Congo life and living principles as well as a chapter on the concept of the V, the basis for all realities and the binding force to all.You will love all of the proverbs as they are according to the author “ regarded as the warehouse of the ancient African wisdom.” This book is amust have, must read for all who value the old ways of living and who know that this is the way to go.
Be patient
This book is not for the faint of heart. as in faint heart never fair suitor won. You will have to work to get into this book, it does not reveal itself to the casual reader. all of those foolish notions about "primitives" fly far away when you try to examine this wisdom. Good Luck.

Rhetorically brilliant - how/why village society works
In the first chapter,"Kongo Cosmology in Graphics", Mr. Bunseki utilizes an ingenious series of geometric figures/diagrams to outline the cosmological/linguistic underpinnings of Bantu-Kongo society in the villages where he grew up and has lived for over 40 years. As in other African societies, so-called societal and ritual categories often overlap in many different ways - things aren't always as they seem, but this is why things work so well and are expressive of so much vitality. Everything interpenetrates with everything else, in numerous ways, and on numerous levels, and from numberless standpoints. Incredibly uplifting!!!
I've had this book for several months now and remains to be an excellent source to remind me of who I really am.When I am struggling with negative emotions, I turn to this book and reread the essays.It has never failed to make me feel better.By reading this book, it helps me connect to my spirit which in turn uplifts me.Susan Taylor has some wonderful insights and every time I reread any of the essays, I gain something new.I have recommended her books to so many friends and they love her.

An excellent book....everyone should read this...
Although Dr. Walker touches on some of the problems that exists in the African-American family and the generational curses and mind sets of African-Americans, I believe that everyone can and will benefit by reading this book. His analogy of the stronghold and how it must be dismantled is superb. Excellent treatment
Dr. Walker's treatment of these issues is fantastic!! He brings dynamic insight into the problems that plaugue the black community. This book looks at our problems at the root and gives details on how to specifically deal with them. It is very well written with doctrinal integrity, therapeautic accuracy, and academic excellence. My only problem or criticism is that it is much to brief. The black community needs more resources such as this.

Dr. Walker wrote his book "to explain the trouble of African-American family phenomenon in a spiritual way."Part I of the book, "The Strongholds in African-American families," is not much more than alisting of attitudes that cause difficulties in black families.Walker'sdiscussion of those attitudes is brief and superficial.Part II of thebook, however, gives a more detailed discussion of ways of overcomingproblems that destroy African-American homes.The book ends with a briefbut helpful appendices. ... Religion, religion, religion!
There's a lot of in-bickering within the intellectual community as to the primary motivation for any particular event. People who have majored in political science will argue that politics is always the key. People who have majored in sociology will argue that it's social change that's the key. People, like myself, who have majored in religion will always seem to find that religion is the key.
"Faith" and civil rights in Mississippi.
Highly recommended account of the role of "faith" in the lives of five prominent figures in Mississippi during the civil rights movement.Saints (Fannie Lou Hamer, Edwin King, Cleveland Sellers) and sinners (Sam Bowers and Douglas Hudgins) are both represented.Hudgins and other Jackson elites come off nearly as loathsome as Bowers.Marsh's prose is brilliant, providing for a lively and inspiring read.

God's Long Summer covers a very exciting and troubled time in American History. The various points of view Marsh used to complete this book is the key to understanding this time period. However, the unnecessary abundance of religious references and the slow pace of the book make it almost unreadable. The Classic
Some books are classics; "Slave Religion" is The Classic in this genre. Raboteau, America's foremost scholar on African American religious history, weaves copious first-hand quotations with insightful, riveting commentary to provide a tremendous foundation for understanding Christianity among the enslaved African Americas.
excellent and informative
Prof Raboteau's book is clearly written and highly informative. He has an excellent sense of how to present his material in an engaging manner, and a sharp critical faculty. I enjoyed reading this book very much - as I also enjoyed his more recent books, A FIRE IN THE BONES and A SORROWFUL JOY, both of which I would recommned.

Albert J. Raboteau originally wrote 'Slave Religion: The "Invisible Institution" in the Antebellum South' as an expansion and derivation of his doctoral dissertation, little expecting it to become a classic.This updated version, twenty-five years after its original publication in 1978, includes Raboteau's response to some of the reactions he received over time from various audiences.Citing his friend and mentor Sydney Ahlstrom's prediction, the recovery of African-American history as a subject in its own right also served to revitalise the subject of American religious history, as African-American history cannot be told without a great part of the religious traditions, and the religious history of America cannot be told adequately without incorporation of the African-American experience.
