Russell, the Apologist's Nightmare
This is one of those books that wakes you up. Although some of this collection of essays was more relevant to Edwardian England in its social commentary, the greater part of Russell's logic and his ideas are universal (and perhaps even more current today as social criticism given the recent popularity of design arguments among those grasping for a rational basis for religious faith).But the best thing about this book is simply enjoying the style of a gifted writer who was also one of history's most gifted thinkers.You cannot read this book without having a visceral reaction.The atheist will smile, perhaps even laugh.The believer, of whatever stripe, will be shaken and likely will toss the book away as though shunning Satan.The agnostic will have even more reason to think about how much we as a race do not know.
Expose the lies of religion, but logic is not always the answer
I read this book over forty years ago and learned well its argument against christianity, god, jesus, bigotry and any religion, which I have always despised since an early age. It seemed to me obvious that any firm and ultimate belief accepted with no criticism, with no hint whatsoever of a proof, would eventually generate instances of the opposite of what it intends to obtain.
AFreethinker's Classic
Another classic I've just finished rereading(6/06-1st 8/96). Fascinating to see the development of many of Bertie's ideas over the years of his long & productive life. Many are timeless among freethinkers-such as contempt for dogma of any sort-be it religious or modern secular totalitarian variants. Others appear quaint & naive-such as his notion of obviating criminality by education & redistribution of wealth. This is a direct reflection of his involvement w/British Fabian Socialism of the late 19th & early 20th centuries. Also interesting is to note Bertie's criticism of Free Will in favor of biosocial determanism which has been remorphed by behaviorists & evolutionary biologists/psychiatrists over the past 15-20 years. Pinker's recent THE BLANK SLATE is a fairly sophisticated reiteration of this. Also interesting is Bertie's uncritical elevation of Islam as historically more tolerant of dissent & heterodoxy than Christianity-a dangerous mistake only recently being addressed by more aggressive scholarship such as the work of Ibn Warraq(see my recent review of his WHY I AM NOT A MUSLIM). All told-a great book & one I would recommend highly to freethinkers & students of religious "higher criticism".

Embarrassing
Pamela Ewen is a lawyer who specializes in Corporate Finance. From reading her book, it's obvious that she doesn't specialize in history or biblical studies. Compare this book to the exceptionally good book by Haim Cohn "The Trial and Death of Jesus" and you'll see how a legal scholar with a biblical studies background handles the same material.
Read this before buying this book
I spent many years in the Christian world and have much experience with the rationalizing that is typically passed off as reason. Ultimately, the only reasonable faith is the faith that admits to its unreasonableness. One must then grapple with the question of delusion. This review exposes the same old thing in this book.
Interesting but Fatally Flawed
I was surprised that a prestigious attorney could present arguments so flawed that a layman like myself could pick them out on a quick reading.The very concept itself is inadequate, since in any trial there is a defense and a prosecution.Be prepared to hear nothing but a defense argument here.This book will be an appreciated gift for your Christian friend or family member.Otherwise, don't bother.

A valuable resource.
This is a valuable resource for any Christian to have.It is especially great for homeschool families and parents who wish to ground their children in the truths of the Bible before they leave home.My children enjoy reading this book and it has helped all of us to learn much and to be ready with an answer to those who question us.This should be in every Christian family's library!

Definitely worth thinking about
I've always had difficulty using the word "spiritual" outside the context of its more typical theistic uses.Bob Solomon writes that it is indeed possible to be spiritual and yet not believe in the supernatural.For me, at least, this depends on a clear-cut distinction between what is religious and what is theological.In some ways, I still have trouble seeing the forest for the trees, but I really enjoyed his discussion of the spiritual passions.
Extremely Intelligent, Thought-Provoking
This is a fascinating book.NOT for the New Age "spirituality" group, but for intelligent, skeptical thinkers interested in the investigations of someone who knows Western philosophy well (and a little Eastern) who is asking how to live one's life.Solomon defines spirituality as "the thoughtful love of life" and then asks how we can practice it. well, maybe it's not so bad
I was a philosophy student for five semesters, sincerely (and naively) searching for truth and wisdom. I nearly completed the major before I just got tired of its irrelevance. Solomon nicely summed up my experience, "What had originally been conceived as the love of wisdom had become a tedious technical enterprise, appealing more to students with affective disorders than to those who were seeking the meaning of life." With such disappointment in the background, I looked forward to recovering a bit of enthusiasm for Western philosophy, to receiving a bit of its wisdom for my life, for my skeptical spirituality.Read more

A must read, regardless of worldview
Even though this book is not perfect, it has more than enough philosophical and historical value to qualify as a must read.

Hello to all those who have read this book.After reading your reviews abour this book i felt i must say something.WHy are you so set against God and Christianity?One of you said this book was what made him rejest Christianity.Christianity is not some weird religion,it is the faith that Jesus Christ died for all humans, who He loves so much.Where are you going after you die?Christ is waiting for you to call to Him and ask for eternal life.The Bible isnt some whack job scribbling stuff down, it is God inspired.There are more manuscripts and texts to prove the Bible is real and written by those who claimed to write it.there are more manuscripts than that of Homer's The Odyssey, yet we regard that as true.So the Gospels werent written right after the disciples were with Jesus, but they were written at a time when those people could still remember their times with Christ.I am going to wrap it up now, but if you want to hear the real TRUTH, read God's Word.If you don't believe that, there are so many books that so the incredible evidence for the Bible.The Age of Reason was written by a man who hated Christianity.PLease do not just accept his writing without looking at the BIble.Jesus Christ loves you, and he longs for you to accept Him so He can change your life and give you the awesome gift of eternal life with Him.Thank you!

Handy Youth Ministry Reference
HELP! I'M A VOLUNTEER YOUTH WORKER! by Doug Fields is the book that started the complete HELP! line of youth worker books put out by Youth Specialties. The book serves as a great "jumper cable" to your ministry work. Fields goes through fifty different little ways to help you in ministry to jr. high and high school students. There are a few personal stories littered throughout, helping to drive home the points. Quite a handful of graphics are included - filling up a LOT of space in this 96-page book. The graphics look incredibly cheesy, and probably should have been replaced by more text. A lot of the material here is repeated in quite a few other books on high school ministry, but this is a great resource to have on the shelf - or to take along in the car to a retreat.

Good, but Short
Doug provides 52 great ideas for serving as a volunteer youth worker.The ideas range from the obvious to the amazingly practical (probably depending on how long you've already worked with teens!).It helps that this book can be read in one night (really!) and can be applied in small church contexts of almost any sort. For Newbies
This book is very short and to the point (can be fully read while you wait for the pizza man to get to your house.)If you have any prior ministry experience, or doing things with various organizations, you probably don't need this book... though it might be good for refreshing yourself on a couple things.In general, some practical advice. ... More aptly titled "Why I Am an Atheist"
I agree with the first reviewer here, but I'd like to add why I was disappointed by this book.If I could have read it in a book store, I would never have bought it.Understand that I was looking for a book that would confirm that I am an agnostic, neither a theist nor an atheist, and therefore expected arguments of why I should believe in God as well as why I should not.

Truly Awesome
Krishnamurti's works offer a rare glimpse of the sacred without dogma or path. I was surprised to see many of the people reviewing this text seem to have little understanding of what K is suggesting. K is not engaging in "egomania", instead he is constantly inviting the audience (and readers) to find out for themselves rather than accept an answer. The idea that reality is beyond our thinking is by no means a new one, but K helps us to see all the hundreds of thousands of ways that thought has looked for security -- which includes religion.
One of the best books of Krishnamurti's "teachings"
I've read over 25 Krishamurti books, including all the "big ones" like Freedom from the Known, The First and Last Freedom, Total Freedom, Awakening of Intelligence, Flight of the Eagle, Krishmaurti's Notebook, etc., many of which I've read more than once.I've given all of them away to share K's message but kept four of them which I keep as references for focused daily reflection/meditation (as opposed to the meditation of all waking life). The four I've kept are Freedom from the Known, On God, On Right Livelihood, and Education and the Significance of Life (the last one of great relevance to me since I'm an educator).And so now I always recommend (and often give) the first three books on that list I just mentioned to anyone who wants to learn more about K's "teachings.""Freedom from the Known" is the single best, most concise and thorough summary of all K's teachings."On God" should greatly help anyone who is searching for ultimate reality, Truth, God, Enlightenment, Nirvana, The Meaning of Life, or whatever one wants to call it. No summary will do it justice; you must read it for yourself."On Right Livelihood" addresses the issue of our daily living, in work, leisure, and even to some degree home life and family relationship, becuase, as K emphasizes, they all should be an integrated whole, not fragmented parts of our lives."Education and the Significance of Life" is also or relevance to anyone who has children or who teaches; it will transform the way you view childrearing and education.I would say that those four books would be all a person would need to transform one's life; to have a radical revolution in living.

Over his head
Though I like Krishnamurti's work in general, this is a [weak] one. Since he is anti-organization, anti-teacher he dimisses all the mystics and spiritual teachers who ever lived. They don't know but since I'm free of all that dogma and rigid teachings I know best sums up Krisnamurti's thought on god. This borders on egomania. Sadly by lowering the topic to such a low level of discourse he makes himself no better than any new age kook. Since he had no method per se and dismisses any sort development of higher level perceptions he puts himself in a box all alone. It's too bad his experience with Theosophy ruined his opinion of teachers and organizations. Read more

Salvation for the followers!
As a Christian, I have trouble thinking critically and basing my beliefs on my own independent thought.Thank GOD I found this book when I did.Now I really don't need to think carefully about the critical questions posed to me by the Satan-worshipping "thinkers."I can simply open this book and repeat what's told to me by someone else.After all, that's how I know the Bible is true!

For Women AND Men
This thought provoking book is a compilation of views and lectures of historic, prominent and free thinking women. It is highly recommended for any open-minded person searching for answers free from the dogmas of the various religions. It is worth reading, even if not agreeing with authors' philosophies.

This is a phenominal, rich text that stirs the mind & imagination & creates a whole new sense of power & self-determination. It is also useful in the sense that it validates so many women who might feel marginalized by society. I love it!

I wish every woman could read this!
I first checked this book out of the library. I wasn't sure about it as I have had to really wade through quite a few books recently and didn't want to buy something that would put me to sleep. But I hadn't finished the introduction yet, and I knew I would be buying it. It's a fascinating book, and way overdue to be published! I wish everybody, but especially every woman, could read this book! There are so many interesting things in here, and no matter how much you think you know about feminism, freethought, etc, there is something new for you in this book. A welcome appraisal and criticism of Hegel's philosophy of religion
This text is not intended as an introduction to Hegel, and as such the author assumes the reader has a certain familiarity with Hegel and Hegelian themes. For any reader who has made either a personal or academic study of Hegel's texts, however, this is a thouroughly insightful book. Without many lengthy quotations or detailed analyses of particular Hegelian texts, Desmond argues the importance of the question of God within Hegel's thought and then explores whether the philosophical tools offered by Hegel provide a sufficient answer.

The book for a lifetime
Truly inspirational.A book to change your life.It speaks of the valleys and heights of life in a beautiful metaphorical way.

Spiritual Awakening
Hinds' Feet On High Places is thoroughly enjoyable.It takes you on a journey that allows you to see yourself and the situations you face from God's perspective.The book beautifully expresses the tender love the Lord has for His children who seek Him. After reading Hinds' Feet, it caused me to search my soul and strive for a deeper relationship with the Savior.

This book saved my brother's life - literally and many others, too!
Many years ago, my Brother, Jeff, lived a very unfulfilling, sinful life.(When I say sinful, I DO mean full of the worst kinds of sin imaginable).A co-worker sensed histotal dissatisfaction with life, so she brought this book to work and placed it in his locker.Jeff did not think much of it, but he grudgingly took it home and read it in one sitting!He got down on his knees the second he finished reading "Hinds Feet on High Places" and prayed: "Lord, I don't care what price I have to pay.I am like the character "Much-Afraid" and I want to walk the High Places with you.Please forgive my sins, enter my heart and make me a new creation".Nothing happened immediately, but Jeff felt the weight of the world lift from his shoulders.One week later, he was driving home from practicing the organ at the church where he played each Sunday.After setting the organ stops, he grabbed his coat, got in his car, buckled his seatbelt and slowlymerged onto a four-lane highway with a 45mph speed limit.After just a few minutes, Jeff's life went black.A drunk driver was being chased by the police for speeding , clocked at 82mph in this 45mph zone.The drunk driver never even realized my brother was in the far right lane.He easily could have passed him as there were no other cars on the road at the time.But instead, he plowed directly into the rear of Jeff's car sending it in a spin, end over end 6 times until it rested in a telephone pole.The paramedics were there within 2 minutes.But Jeff was not breathing, his heart had stopped, he was hanging upside down still fastened in his seatbelt with a spinal cord injury trying to take his life. Needless to say, miraculously Jeff survived against all odds and went on the eventually finish his degree in Ministry.He rode in his wheelchair-lift van and spoke against drunk driving at high schools; he went from church to church to preach that contentment comes only from being satisfied with what one has in Christ Jesus; Jeff rode thousands of miles, preaching the goodness of God and how he would NEVER change a thing about his life, because he now was free and able to walk on thine high places with his Savior.Jeff, today, seventeen years later, three years after going to Heaven,still preaches the Gospel with a smile on his face.I am certain he is no longer encumbered by a wheelchair.But it wouldn't matter to Jeff if he was or wasn't.As long as Jeff is still walking, hand-in-hand on thine high places with Jesus, his Savior..................I can't think of a higher recommendation for a book than this. One could easily and sincerely say this can be a life-changing book. If you are looking for TRUTH but don't want it in a Church-like presentation, this book is for you! ... Read more

The Cry of the Wolfe:a compelling and engaging reader
This is an excellent work that anyone interested in the intersection of religion and culture should read.Wolfe embodies the very humanism he calls for in the introduction as well as his fine editing of "Image: A Journal for the Arts and Religion"You can sample his fine editorials online for each issue at imagejournal.org.He has assembled a brilliant, diverse mix of Christian scholars for this wonderful book.

Mistitled
I bought this book thinking that it would cover the subject of Religious Humanism.After reading the introduction, however, I feel as though the author has deliberately set about to confuse the term.At first I thought that the author might have been simply ignorant of the historical use of the term "Religious Humanism" as defined in documents such as the 1933 "Humanist Manifesto I".With statements like "religious humanists [...] go about their work without much taste for manifestos", however, I do not believe that ignorance can be blamed.Readers will be disappointed to find that this is a work on liberal theism, not Religious Humanism.

God must be rolling over in his grave!
Dr. Henderson has an informal conversation with the reader which boils down to "the sky is blue, the grass is green, and you know it is, so please stop pretending it ain't so!"
not scholarship -- just common sense
John Henderson argues for what is basically a new religion based on morality rather than pretended revelation from a less-than-admirable deity.He recognizes that, "religion, as it is practised today, does more harm than good."Most of the book is devoted to proving that assertion, and he does so very effectively.
