5-0 out of 5 stars The experiences in this book hold up to scripture
This book, although offspring of the more popular "Divine Revelation of Hell" does have an excellent description of heaven.None of it sounded alarms to me while reading it.As with all books, ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern truth and lie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book will blow your mind of the wonderful things that happens in heaven. She use a lot of scriptures to relate to the things she seen in heaven. I believe that this book was trulyinspired by God.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book that is relevant to US times
The idea of Wallis' book "God's Politics" was to have the general public, liberals in particular, learn something while both parties work together to improve their political differences that are having some negative effects on the world around them. For anyone in search of ways on how to make those transform those ideas into reality, this book is a must-have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Catholics!
Double Crossed is a must read for all Catholics - practicing, lapsed or somewhere in between.
5-0 out of 5 stars DOUBLE CROSSED and AT THE CROSSROADS
DOUBLE CROSSED shows how Church Fathers thoughtlessly killed its willingly obedient, unpaid or underpaid nun work force and, in the process, killed so many excellent schools, hospitals, and social services. When Vatican II arrived, this writer had been privileged with sixteen years of extraordinary Catholic schooling, and, in good conscience, felt forced to review how one could maintain faith in such a woman-unfriendly church. Still, no longer identifying with Catholicism, I continued to respect and honor the women who taught me to think for myself. I considered them feminists before we used that term. That's when, in appreciation and tribute, I wrote AT THE CROSSROADS, a novel about four contemporary nuns facing feminist issues. If you liked DOUBLE CROSSED, you will like AT THE CROSSROADS because it lets the reader experience what it was like to be a nun "before" we accepted women as equals, and the kind of moral challenges one must endure before one dares embrace an "after."

1-0 out of 5 stars I think the reader is double-crossed
If the author, as an investigative journalist, took a step back and looked at the past versus the future in terms of American female religious, he would discover that there are orders today that are anything BUT in decline. I'll site one for example, that I have personal experience with: The Nashville Dominicans. This order has over 200 woman, and the average age is 36. Yes, 36. When you look closer, it is easy to see why. As with every other religious order in this country that is blossoming today, the members wear full habits, they pray the Rosary, they focus on Eucharistic Adoration, and they are obedient to the Magisterium. For readers trying to figure out what really happened after Vatican II, here is some true history... When Cardinal Wojtyla (the future John Paul II and a man who had significant input in many of the documents that were issued from Vatican II) returned to his home country of Poland, he helped his people understand and implement the changes that the Council had discerned. The Polish had no problems embracing the changes, and their faith deepened as a result. Poland remains the most devout Catholic nation in the world. The American Bishops, on the other hand, did not exhibit the same cohesive leadership in our own country after Vatican II, and as a result, many priests, religious, and lay people were left to figure things out on their own. The fruits of this experimentation has led to poorly catechized adults, a decline in priests and religious, and a secular mindset. These facts cannot be argued. Post-Vatican II Catholics, like myself, want more than the watered-down faith we've been handed. We seek the truth, which is waiting for us at the heart of our faith, and we seek priests and religious who represent that truth. I, for one, feel double-crossed by Mr. Briggs, not the Catholic Church. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars great idea, little proof
As part of my enquiry into the forces that the Reformation unleased, I decided to at last read this classic.
5-0 out of 5 stars ". . . a more impassable and in its invisibility more terrifying gulf. . ."
Here is an argument which merits a particular accolade: it is one of the few modern academic theories whose acceptance has withstood the test of time.Max Weber's claim, that the Protestant ethic provided the psychological/sociological framework for the emergence of Capitalism in the formative 16th and 17th centuries has surprisingly outlived, in its original whole, such momentous theses as Einsteinian relativity, to the extent that it remains so far unscathed by the inevitable skeptical critique, in tact in its primary tenets.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Sociology Classic
Modern readers may find the dry style this book is written in a bit boring, but the subject matter makes up for it. Weber looks at 4 branches of Protestantism (Calvinism, Pietism, Methodists, Baptists) and how they each affected the development of modern capitalism. It also sheds light on some of the origins of modern Western beliefs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Everyone!
I thought that this book was very informative and insightful. It presented many good points in common areas of Christian lives and our present lack of grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appreciate the honest escape this book provides
I read this book over a long Christmas break and it was the perfect book for the season. Grace is an amazing thing and Mr. Yancey captures it so well in his words. Mr. Yancey's writing style is very comforting like a good conversation. I recommend this both as something to read and something to give as a gift to someone that needs a reminder of the good in this world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but it got redundant..
I thought this book had some very insightful looks into grace, and its role in Chrisianity. The problem I had with this book is that pretty much all the insights could have been fit into a 20 page paper.I ended up having to really force myself to finish the book because about half way through the book, I got really bored with the rehashing of the same ideas.Worth reading, but I would probably just stop halfway through, you will have gotten everything the book will offer you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highest recommendation
Bailey's unique contribution is that he sat down with a number of trusted Palestinian nomads and listened carefully to their take on the cultural issues behind various parables. He contends, with some justice, that this group of people have something in contact with the original culture that these parables arose in, and thus can help us understand the unstated assumptions and cultural implications of the texts. He invested many years in this and did it with care and precision. On top of that, he has explored the early translations of the New Testament into Syrac and related languages. The result is nothing short of stunning. His analysis of the puzzling parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16:1-13) is worth the price of admission alone, and even on the well-trod parable of the Good Samaritan, he has much valuable insight to share.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone else missing a page?
Just thought I'd write a note because my combined edition book is missing two pages that are supposed to follow p. 105.Though there is a page 106 and 107, I notice the footnotes in my book go from 79 on p. 105 and skip to 87 on p. 107...obviously a misprint.Amazon had never heard of such a problem so I'm getting a new one...just wondered if this had happened to anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rescuing truth from familiarity
This is one of Dr. Ken Bailey's most accessible works in which he makes the wealth of his Biblical and cultural insights available for wide study.Dr. Bailey has long characterized his work with the catch-phrase "To rescue truth from familarity".There are certainly few passages of Scripture more familiar than Luke 15 and the Parable of the Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and Lost Sons. How many of us see that this familar teaching of Jesus is really a profound theological teaching on Who Jesus is?Jesus is the theologican who tells stories by taking familar Old Testament passages, here Psalm 23, and retelling them to make Himself the center. To top it off, this book closes with a delightful play that retells the parable in daramatic form and underscores its deep truth. You will thoroughly enjoy and learn from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily C. S. Lewis fix for familiar readers
If you are familiar with the works of C. S. Lewis, then this book is for you.It contains snippets of trivia about his life in addition to a passage a day from his numerous works. However, I would recommend this book to those who've already read and reflected on at least one of his other books in its entirety. You can then appreciate how Lewis develops his complex thoughts and arguments through many chapters, not just one paragraph. This book of daily readings can then be used as a starting point to refresh you on a bit of insight that will lead you to greater reflection of your faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read !
Topic:The History of the bible, its translations, and attitudes towards it.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent survey.
This is an introduction to the History of the Bible, but even readers who are already familiar with the outline of the subject will, I think, discover many details that are new to them in this very well told story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and approachable
Pelikan writes in an easy style and smoothly flowing perspective born of his own long familiarity with the material. He chronicles the formation of the texts known as the Old and New Testaments from their earliest oral traditions. It becomes clear that through long years and re-scribing and translating the Bible, it has been in evolution. The major effort in recent years is to return to the earliest accurate version available, and that this requires considerable scholarship to accomplish.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiration to my Art Students!
Last year I used this book as a resource for a special high school art unit that I developed entitled "Sacred Circles."In addition to learning about circular artwork in various cultures and world religions, students used Judith's beautiful illustrations and step by step guides to create mandalas of their own. (...) This is a book that I still have available in my classroom and students continue to refer to it (independently!) to advance their drawing techniques.SO glad I bought this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Radiantly Inspiring
The beauty of the mandalas pictured in the book intimidated me because ithad been so many years since I'd created any art.I didn't think I coulddo it.But I did it and I'm extremely grateful to Judith Cornell forwriting this book.Working on the exercises at home, alone, is not thesame experience as it would be in a group. The group can offer a creativesupport level that helps each individual surpass previous achievements. However, I'm so happy with the mandalas I created as a result of theseexercises that I've put each one up on the wall. And, even more important,I've continued to draw.No more creative blocks for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly AWE inspiring!
Mandala: Luminous Symbols for Healing, by Judith Cornell, is absolutelythe most incredibly beautiful book I've ever held in my hands.Holding andlooking at it, even before reading, is like a sacred experience. Is it thebeauty of the lay-out and illustrations? The very real spiritual impact ofthe mandalas presented, both historical and contemporary?A moment ofhealing even in the first moment's gasp of awe while browsing its pages? One even begins to caress its binding. One of my favorite activities nowis to present it to friends and watch their faces--their eyes pop open, their jaws drop in amazement--and hear the quick intake of breath as itscolor begins to radiate into their awareness.Beyond the first impression, reading took me to awesome depths and insights regarding ultimate reality, syntheses I'd previously long puzzled.Don't miss this dazzling yet holyexperience.Look, read, and practice the simple yet brilliantart-as-at-one-ment exercises for the depth of your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars understanding theology
The basics theology book is an excellent book for those studying theology for themself or at the university. The terms selected are the ones most Christians use but don't understand.
4-0 out of 5 stars Theology: The Basics
Something I have kept in the back of my mind for awhile now is to be on the alert for a short book delineating Christianity in its broadest categories. For me, the utility of such a book - were it to exist - would consist in having something to give to friends and acquaintances from different religious backgrounds, who are interested in what Christianity is generally about. Without wanting to sound melodramatic, let me say that Dr. Alister McGrath's book, _Theology: The Basics_, has filled that gap and freed up some memory in the back of my mind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Theology for everyone...
Alister McGrath is an author I rely upon frequently for helping to teach theology. He has a broad-based, ecumenical approach useful and accessible to Catholics and Protestants; firmly grounded in the long history of Christendom and intellectual developments arising out of the early church forward, there is much that Orthodox Christians would also find interesting and helpful. His works on Christian spirituality, historical theology, and his excellent one-volume introduction to theology are constant references of mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging narrative
Shelley's text speeds along, especially in early chapters. He uses a very interesting style in the first two chapters whereby he explains the uniqueness of the appearance of Jesus on the scene in Roman-occupied Israel, listing the novelties of the new "Jesus movement". He curiously does not list the Resurrection in the list of facts, instead it pops up later in the narrative thread as (paraphrase) "Jesus died and then later the Nazarenes began saying in the public square that he had been raised from the dead". I know some people that would not care for this style, as being seen as too open minded, and indeed would be offended by it. On the contrary, I find it to be refreshing, with a look at "why would these people become Christians anyway?", especially with the likely chance of being martyred.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of the history of the Church
A great book for anyone looking for an accessible introduction to the history of the Church. Shelley masters over two millennia's worth of material and relates it in bite-sized chunks that even an absolute beginner to this subject will find easy to digest. The lively and yet succinct prose masks the amount of detail that the book manages to convey and the amount of research that must have gone into it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Drama
"Fundamentalists," "evangelicals," "neo-evangelicals,"...so many labels, what's the difference, and how'd Christianity come to be so denominated? This book manages to meld the movements, events, and personalities into an effortless and fascinating read that's factual without sounding like a dry, reference book.By reading of the influences of Greek philosophy and political realities on Augustine, one understands how the Church moved from a literal interpretation to an allegorical interpretation of the Bible that affects us still today--back then it seemed that the Church was taking over kingdoms, reigning, prompting doubt over a literal, yet future reign of Christ on Earth for 1000 years.Similarly, other developments in the Church can be understood as products of history, such as the availability of the Bible in the vernacular for the common man leading to increasing rejection of traditions not supported by scripture, and in turn to the rise of democracy.Fundamentalism arose as a response to liberal theology, and so on.And through it all, there were passionate missionaries, brilliant scholars, dedicated martyrs, villains, heretics, and more adding to the drama. This book is comprehensive in breadth (even includes the Moral Majority and the Purpose-Driven Life movements), but for depth one must look elsewhere, as this is an overview. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is my favorite book written by Doreen Virtue, Ph.D.While she has many good resources, this is the most helpful to me on a regular basis.I literally have sticky tabs in it for quick references for prayers included in the book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Just self promoting, shallow with nothing about healing
Almost every paragraph is filled with this woman's self promoting her business, bragging of meeting with TV personalities, talking about her seminars, meeting with clients (so that YOU will want to pay for her time also), and general self centeredness. I have really had enough of these people who are so obviously eager to cash in on the New Age interest and have no scruples at all, just raw greed. It comes through loud and clear in this book.
