5-0 out of 5 stars Studies on The Sermon on the Mount
One of the most impactful books I have ever read next to the Bible itself! Every professing Christian should read this book over and over. A classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars complete, detailed
This book goes into Jesus' Great Sermon in great detail, studying every phrase as well as 1st emphasizing the importance of the whole. It cannot be taken out of context or out of order- our Lord made it perfect as is.It is ALL very important, even the parts I would skim over in the past, and this book is very good at pointing that out

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing reading for a believer
Doctor Martyn Lloyd-Jones has preached approximately 60 sermons that makeup this book.Fortunately the writing has not removed the impact of the preaching that has produced this work.I strive to share this book with brothers and sisters in Christ for it is my belief that every member of the Body of Christ would be mightily impacted through the reading and studying of this work. The reading of this book has caused me to purchase additional writings by this author, such as; his series on Romans, and the series on Ephesians.I was first introduced to the author when I was given a two volume biography of Doctor Lloyd-Jones by Iain Murray ... another enriching experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite
This book is the best thing I have bought in a long time!!It gives great overviews of most of the non-christian religions and mythologies from all over the world. It is easy to read and very enjoyable to read.Because of its already large size it can't give every detail of every mythology, but it definitely gives you enough information so you could know where to look to find more details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Major Myths Revealed...
A reference book of this quality is an excellent addition to your reference library... especially if you are the type of person who likes to understand other's at a deep level.Whatever your subject, students of many different topics would also find this an indispensable title to have in your library. With more than 700 colour photographs and nearly 700 pages of information-packed pages to look through, `Mythology' is an excellent value reference book to add to your collection.

This massive coffee-table style book gives a good overview of some of the major mythologies in the world.Overall, it has both good and bad points, with the good generally outweighing the bad.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I am new to christian apologetics but this book has helped me learn a lot about it.In addition this book equipped me with the knowledge I need to confront other about the faith.I cant say I agree with them in everything.. mostly just the creation-evolution part but other than that this book was excellent and I would recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Comprehensive and readable for almost anyone
Christian apologetics are a demanding and difficult subject for most people.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I must totally disagree with a previous reviewer who critiqued this book's writing style. I've found that this book is an excellent apologetics resource. It covers many topics indepth and with lucid clarity. The previous reviewer who complained at length about its "horrible" prose and compared it to fine print or a legal text apparently cannot handle even the slightest technical language, which is of course necessary when discussing technical issues that this book covers. The text to me did not seem overly long, nor boring. It does not include much technical language (you don't need any previous philosophy education to understand it) but you do need to be able to think logically and read carefully, skills apparently the previous critical reviewer lacks.

2-0 out of 5 stars GOD AND HELL 1/3 OF ANGELS LEFT ARE SUPPOSED ETERNAL HOME WHY? DOESNT MAKE SENSE
thought in the courtroom both sides get interviewed well not in this book he only tells of comments by opposing beliefs and interviews the people to reaffirm his believe system! i will give lee strobel some credit by raising some good questions. I would have liked to see him interview an author like IMMANUEL VELIKOVSKY(PASSED AWAY), ZECHARIA SITCHIN AND AHMED OSMAN.What about all the contradictions in the bible for example INCEST ADAM AND EVE/ NOAH AND HIS FAMILY. deutorononmy 27:22, levitcus 20:17 geneisis 20:11-12 geneisis 17:15-16(examples taken from atheists.org)I'AM NOT AN ATHEISTS BUT THEY MAKE GOOD POINTS. one of the comments on how can god kill innocent children and the world is chaotic in the end times can be desponded in IMMANUEL VELIKOSKY WORKS the earth was more chaotic in times past with diseases, floods, earthquakes, comets, tidal waves, mass extinctions (example dinosaurs), meteors (example arizona's large crater)look at the moon and all its craters all threw out history we used too be in extreme chaos alot more than now."GOD IS EVERWHERE IN EVERYTHING CANNOT BE NEAR OR AROUND SIN" THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!! HELL CANNOT BE WHERE GOD IS NOT!HELL DOES NOT EXIST, CAUSE GOD IS EVERYWHERE/IN EVERYTHING AND THE HOLYSPIRIT IS IN CHRISTIANS BUT THEY STILL SIN !GOD CANNOT BE NEAR OR IN SIN HELL IS THE PUNISHMENT, SO TECHNICALLY GOD CANNOT BE IN ANYONE CAUSE WE ALL ARE SUPPOSEDED SINNERS NO ONE IS PERFECT" . THERE IS THE LAW OF THE UNIVERSE= BASICALLY KARMA) THE CHURCH USES SIN TO CONTROL BY GUILT AND FEAR TO KEEP YOU COMING BACK FOR REPENTANCE AND THEN YOU OFFER UP 10% CAUSE ITS THE RIGHT THING TOO DO AND YOU FEEL YOUR GUILT LIFTED/ everyone has opinions if where going too come off SEMI- neutral then lets even it out LEE!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Strobel's Second Apolgetic Work Continues His Search for Faith
Like many American Christians, I was brought to church most Sundays and endured countless sermons and lessons. Despite this seemingly rich education on Christian principles, I never was exposed to a lesson or class on the existence of God; God's existence was assumed as fact. As I matured into my twenties and went to college, the existance of God was no longer taken for granted. I encountered many agnostics and atheists among my many college professors. The net result of their influence was to question my faith. I never lost my faith, but I found it was a faith that could not withstand scrutiny.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great apologetic work for teens!
This is a concise book that can be read in less than an hour, but still packs many, many answers to reasons you may have against becoming a Christian.Already being Christian, there were two or so ideas in this book that I felt Strobel did not spend enough time on, but this book is really - in my opinion - meant to spur you on to other works that go into much more detail about certain faith topics. In all, a great book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gnosticism vs Christianity
The standing joke about Tom Wright goes like this: An inquiring student gives Dr Wright a call. His secretary says, "Sorry, but he is busy writing a book". To which the student caller replies, "That's OK, I'll hold".
4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Defense
The Gospel of Judas has had its fifteen minutes of fame. It is but another in an endlessly long line of stories or documents meant to shake the foundations of the Christian faith. Like its many predecessors, it gave National Geographic and anti-Christian authors an opportunity to voice their dissension with the biblical story of Jesus. A book titled The Gospel of Judas shot to near the top of the bestsellers lists and nearly as quickly, shot straight back down. Still, while its popularity was short-lived, it allowed Bart Ehrman and other revisionists a chance to laud the epistle for its new insights into the life of Christ. Surely Ehrman forever cast doubt upon his credibility as a historian when he blathered, "(The Gospel of Judas) is one of the greatest historical discoveries of the twentieth century. It rivals the finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls or the Gnostic Gospels of Nag Hammadi."

5-0 out of 5 stars Have used earlier editions for years.
I have used earlier editions of this book, then named Man's Religions, since 1989 as the basis for lectures on World Religion for a community college class.I definately want to get a copy of this 10th edition!I hope in the future to be able to have this textbook for my class because then I will not need to supplement with handouts - everything I need will be right there in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alive
A truly excellent, penetrating, work. David Noss provides an opportunity for the reader to personally shake hands with each major religion: each is introduced with unobtrusive eloquence and exactitude; each is treated with the utmost respect; and so is the reader accorded this same, unpretentious, sacred reverence. One might gain the impression that a very sane and learned scholar in each religion covered is laying out for you the fundamentals and origins of his beliefs and faith, in a non-proselytizing way, for you to see. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book about religions!
The key words for the book could be as the following--Tactful, sophisticated, academic, reader's friendly, accurate, intriguing, inspiring, comprehensive. One can get proud of the Mankind history - notonly wars and dirty politics did we have but the heights of spiritual life,in many forms and manifestations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Cross, the Self, and the Other
Miroslav Volf has written a somewhat complex piece that in the end advocates non-violence in a world of violence. He writes as one who has been in the war zone of the Balkans and come out the other side. This book is important for what it has to say about justice, but more importantly love. Volf has had to deal personally with Serbian fighters who raped, pillaged, put in concentration camps, and murdered his fellow Croatians and he comes down in the end on the side of taking up your cross and following Jesus. Lest one think that he is a weak pacifist, he does come down theologically on the side of a God who judges, if even by violent means, and he calls on us, who wish to appeal to the Christ of the cross for our actions, to trust in the wrath of the Lamb and the one who sits upon the throne.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Differentiation vs. Sinful Exclusion
As I read this book I was challenged to understand theological foundations and keys to understanding deeply rooted conflict among peoples around the world. That is why I recommend this book to you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Embracing Exclusion and Embrace!
This is an awesome text! Of course, more sophisticated reviewers than I have noted the same. For the average person, trying to consider what is the nature of connection, Miroslav uses a basic image to describe the rather intricate dynamics involved in embracing those around us.This is a text that will draw you in and offers much to consider once read.Miroslav's insights are potentially transformative to the reader. If you're wondering about the nature of exclusion, what's at stake and how can you perhaps be an instrument of inclusion, this text is sure to offer helpful insights! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book -
The book goes beyond the rather narrow sounding scope of the title; Brown nicely covers the changes in politics and economics that fostered (or hindered) the spead of Christianity from Ireland to the Middle East. The subject matter is cogently presented and enjoyable to read, unlike other scholarship of this era where authors tend to prove to the reader how much they know leaving the reader somewhat in the dust. Fascinating (at least to me!) is the number of texts that Brown cites that show the changes in orthodoxy from one century to another in various geographical areas, and how those texts came to be preserved. Conclusions are based on either these texts or archiology, not flights of a priori fantasy that all-too-often formed the basis for earlier works on this period. All in all, a book of great scholarship, but most approachable.

2-0 out of 5 stars A great writer produces unreadable prose
Let me say first that I have been a great admirer of Peter Brown for many years. His "World of Late Antiquity" was a seminal work that inspired a generation of scholars to look past the tired old concepts of the fall of the Roman empire, and his biography of Augustine, recently updated, is magnificent.
5-0 out of 5 stars Deep and wide
Peter Brown first came to my attention through his scholarship in the study of Augustine, one of my particular interests in the field of church history. His biography of Augustine is considered one of the standards, having been written first in the 1960s, and revised for the turn of the millennium in 2000.This speaks to the length of his career and involvement with the study of church history generally, of which this volume is a wonderful survey.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Articles in Favor of Intelligent Design
The book itself is a good resource for readers who wish to learn more about the works of Phillip Johnson, a leader of the Intelligent Design theories/(facts according to his supporters). It is a one sided defense of Johnson and tears down Darwin.Granted, Darwin made lots of mistakes, but Darwin was the first word, not the most recent, researcher into evolution. One writer insists the world is 10,000 years old. Some writers refute the existence of genetic mutations, or that any mutated species could survive.I know of the research into genetic mutations of species that following nuclear blasts and I believe that genes can indeed mutate and find it sad we have to debate even this level of science. But, indeed, this is the core of this debate.
5-0 out of 5 stars It must have hit a nerve
I am shocked by the vial hate-speech and mindless ad hominem attacks in the "reviews" printed below. They demonstrate just the kind of vicious closed-minded nonsense that ID proponents seek to dispel. To quote one extreme example (you can read it in context in John Kwok's "review" below): "I find the notion of a Festschrift published in honor of Professor Johnson as absurd as a group of Neo-Nazis publishing one to commemorate Adolf Hitler and his hate-filled book "Mein Kampf" (I find this an apt comparison since Johnson and quite a few of his supporters have an ideological world view that is remarkably close to the likes of Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden.)."
1-0 out of 5 stars When Fools Rush In.... A Vapid Tribute to Intelligent Design's Spiritual Godfather
Darwin's most celebrated nemesis was Samuel Wilberforce, the Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Anglican Church, who was ridiculed by the young biologist Thomas Henry Huxley, in a now famous debate on evolution held in England back in 1860. It's clearly a bit of an exaggeration to describe former University of California, Berkeley law professor Phillip Johnson as "Darwin's Nemesis", since he has come across more as a lightweight intellectual Luddite in his criticisms of evolutionary biology. I will concede that Phillip Johnson may be a gifted legal scholar and a fine law school teacher (One of his former students may have been a former classmate of mine in Frank McCourt's celebrated Stuyvesant High School creative writing course, who earned some notoriety nearly a decade ago for being one of the two female attorneys responsible for deposing Monica Lewinsky at Special White House Counsel Kenneth Starr's Whitewater Washington, D. C.-based grand jury.). But frankly, that's all the credit I am willing to concede to Professor Johnson, since he has demonstrated repeatedly his gross ignorance of science and understanding how excellent scientific research is done (For example, please see my Amazon.com customer review of his book "Darwin on Trial" which I wrote a few years ago.). Such ignorance has been displayed repeatedly by Johnson in his spirited advocacy of "Intelligent Design", via his "Wedge Strategy", in which he and his colleagues have sought to portray "Intelligent Design" as a viable, credible alternative to the Modern Synthesis Theory of Evolution (Of which its fundamental core was - and still remains - Darwin's Theory of Evolution via Natural Selection; one of the "fathers" of the Modern Synthesis, distinguished Russian-American geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky once said that "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.". That profound declaration by Dobzhansky still holds true today.). However, "Intelligent Design" is merely the latest manifestation of an old idea stated originally by William Paley back in the 17th Century, which was rejected soundly not by Darwin and his circle of friends, but instead, by "creationist" precursors who were both eminent scientists and clergymen in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. More succinctly, and indeed, more to the point, this apparently "novel" idea was rejected once by scientists hundreds of years ago; but Phillip Johnson, Michael Behe, and William Dembski valiantly wish that it receive ample consideration from the scientific community, even after Judge John Jones' landmark decision in the Kitzmiller vs. Dover Board of Education trial, in which he concluded that Intelligent Design was a religious doctrine masquerading as science (It is posted at:

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern capitalism and its origins
What Weber's ideas most clearly demonstrate is not capitalism as it is seen by the the devout protestant or any derivation thereof, he clearly proposes that capitalism itself is founded and practiced solely on the moral and ethical teachings of the protestant refromation. Furthurmore, the continued presence of God or any other religious influence is secondary to the overall implications of their socio-political indoctronation.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but not really scholarship
There are so many problems with Weber's idea that it is hard to know where to begin. First of all, there are no examples anywhere in the text of statements of purpose from capitalists reflecting on the Protestant Ethic. The closest Weber comes is Benjamin Franklin, but Franklin was an American who lived several generations after the origin of capitalism in Europe. Franklin better reflects the "can do" spirit of a new continent, the "American Adam," than he is a "secularization" of Calvin. Couldn't Weber find a European Ben Franklin? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Your God!
Although I think the word Your should have been left out of the title, this book is all about the hows and whys of becoming a better discipline of Christ. Our "world" is filled with feel-good theology and illogical answers given by undisciplined but well-intentioned Christians.
3-0 out of 5 stars good product, poor packaging
I had to read the book twice. The first time my irritation kept getting in the way.Often I would agree with a statement only to be irritated by the "support". For example, the statement he makes on page 90 that our culture's "primary agenda is to be amused and entertained" is well taken. But his supporting details are in a paragraph that makes sweeping (and arguablyinaccurate) statements about the origin and meaning of the words "holiday" and "vacation".Rather than being an insightful support to his statement, it seems to be gratuitous rhetoric.
4-0 out of 5 stars XIAN 201: Advanced Spirituality
Many believers I have met seem to hit a glass ceiling in their spiritual growth at some point.Few of these I have known have ever made it above that ceiling without cultivating a Christian life of the mind. This short analysis sums up my own experience, and that of four college-aged men who were hungering for more than their respective Christian upbringings had offered them.We are currently traversing the provocative pages of this book together; for me it is the third reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely informative
Grenz writing is extremely accessable. Any student of theology at any level of their education could find this book to be a great source. It's got something to say about just about every subject you could ask for. His approach is very objective; he represents every side of the argument very fairly. It's impossible not to like this book if you like theology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for theology
This book will be a great lasting legacy for a great pastor/scholar who was recently taken home to be with the Lord.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you like easy-to-read theology books, then get this
This book has to be one of the most accessible evangelical theology books out there. Grenz's book is scholarly yet simple for the layperson. He writes from an evangelical Baptist perspective but builds his work around the concept of the community aspect of the Triune God. He argues that the Triune God's fellowship overflows into the church. All the sections are written from this community aspect of redemption. Grenz covers practically all matters you'll find in standard systematic theologies (from prolegomena to eschatology). The writing style is not like other more technical systematic theologies (e.g., Erickson, Grudem, Reymond, etc.) because it is written in a narrative fashion. You won't see Grenz being too detailed in his discussion of certain issues (hence, his book is only about 700 pages). This book is a must read for anyone wanting a good and easy introduction to the major topics of systematic theology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on being a Christian father and husband
This is an excellent and inspiring book for all men who want to be what God has called them to be. I think most men know that we're not living up to all that we could or should be, but so many of us don't know what to do about it. We're not being "real men." So many of us didn't have good role models in our own fathers, and this book can help fill in the gaps. For example, I use this book when working with young men whose wives or (more often) girlfriends are pregnant at the Crisis Pregnancy Center where my wife and I volunteer.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Essence of a True Man
This book has been a very inspirational tool and a guiding light for how I strive to live as a man of Christ. Drawn from the Word, Stu Weber writes about manhood. Not the manhood under attack today on TV and in the media, but the real Godly truth. He proves and speaks of the responsibility given to man by God, and all the roles that we play while upon the earth. You will have goosebumps from cover to cover and in the end, you will challenge yourself to be the man you know you are meant to be. Tender Warrior will become a cornerstone in you Christian library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Islam Must be Watched
Sperry portrays his work, as reviewed by Beila Rabinowitz, as "an indictment of subversive Muslim leaders representing Saudi Wahhabi interests ... who are planting the seeds of insurrection"; its subtitle could be The Concerned Citizens Guide to Radical Islam in America. He explores how a network of Muslim groups and individuals are exploiting America's religious freedom and ethnic sensitivity in order to undermine America from within. According to the author, "The Muslim establishment plays an elaborate word game ... it is easy to be fooled by such duplicity, so I have provided readers with the intellectual tools to easily identify it." He argues that religiously sanctioned dissimulation (taqiya) enables Muslims to penetrate the U.S. political establishment to further an Islamist agenda. Anticipating accusations of anti-Muslim bias, he hastens to add that he "respects all Muslims as individuals."
5-0 out of 5 stars The Enemies Within
I bought Paul Sperry's book Infiltration, because I wanted to be as informed as possible, without media spin. While immensely disturbed by what I read, I was impressed by the amount of research and the credibility of this author. Paul Sperry is a well known investigati
