Editorial Review

When Helen Schucman, a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University, began hearing an inner voice of rapid dictation (which she eventually identified as the voice of Jesus), she decided to start taking shorthand notes. Then, with the support and encouragement of a colleague, Schucman continued to assemble the teachings that came to her. The result is Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK
THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE I AM ABLE TO SEE CLEAR AND KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT LIFE PEOPLE HAVE TO JUST BE OPEN MINDED AND LET THE LIGHT IN
5-0 out of 5 stars a work in progress
I first became familiar with a Course in Miracles in the early 90's by attending classes for it at a Unity Church. Of course, without reading it had no real idea what it was about. Purchased the book soon after, read the text and started the workbook; but, I stopped at about lesson 100 because of a major life change. It was probably just as well because I really don't think I understood it clearly. A year ago I read Gary Renard's book "The Disappearance Of The Universe" which really brought it down to a human level. I started the workbook again (currently on lesson 268) and it has changed my life. My mind is much quieter, much more free of mindless chatter. Don't get me wrong, I still have those crazy days. I highly recommend everyone buying this book and keep it on hand for when you are ready for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars I hope you all find help
because if you think this is the way to go, you are truly in need of it.First, a careful reading of the Bible mentions false prophets and such (after end point of the Bible) but otherwise says nothing occurs till time for "rapture" and 2nd coming.Unless you want to claim we're in second coming, people who hear from Jesus are either deluded or false prophets. You are free to decide which. On that basis, however, the ideas espoused in the book are either pointless, useless (if delusional), or meant to pull people to the Anti-C if false prophecy.Again, your decision. (Free-will - remember and apply it !!!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Wisdom
Do it for yourself: This book at first will transform your general perspective and when you get it, believe me, your life becomes wiser and better after reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Right on Target!
We're told to love other people as we love ourselves in the first part of this book. This teaching of Jesus Christ, known as the Golden Rule is the starting point of human relations building in this book's discussion on the laws of life. Another principle Jesus taught is found near the conclusion, i.e., that of giving. Templeton writes "Giving makes you a magnet for success" (p. 299).5-0 out of 5 stars Do you need down to earth inspiration?
This is a must for anybody's personal library. No matter where you are in life, Sir John has done us all a great favour by writing this book. He uses a range of philosiphies and theologies to explain everyday events in our lives.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
It's difficult to not type with superlatives when reviewing this book. This is one of the top devotional books on nature I've ever read.I've never seen a finer treatment of the basics of evolution for the layman.I've never seen a more clear portrayal of how Christ is involved in evolution. But most of all, in all my reading on the intersection of evolution and Christianity, I've never seen a more gentle, kinder approach that so exemplifies that attitude of Christ.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts from alife-long creationist...
Other reviewers have reviewed the actual contents of this book; I would like to address how this book effected my life. This is likely pertinent since the author clearly makes an effort to "bridge the worlds between faith and biology."
1-0 out of 5 stars TAKING FIRM HOLD ON AN ILLUSION
The errors, omissions and contradictions in this book confound its message.Falk writes as if he is breaking new ground yet appears to be unaware of the large literature on long-age-evolution and the Bible over the last two centuries.Had he read Henry Morris' 'The Genesis Record,' or Jonathan Sarfati's 'Refuting Compromise' he could never say, as he does, that Genesis creation constitutes only a `tiny section' of scripture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Palmer: a model needing advancement
Be mindful of what lens you read this book through. If it was the year 1984 I would have given Palmer's text five stars.I say this because it seems to be written from the modern perspective in that it is trying to abolish the scientific rationalism that has pervaded the western mind since the enlightenment of the 17th century.Palmer does a good job at displaying the need to incorporate subjectivity into teaching as well objectivity, but in the year 2006 I believe that this text leans to much toward the subjective realm of teaching.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and transformational!
Parker Palmer has created a truly outstanding work with To Know as We Are Known. This work explores the nature of truth, and challenges readers to examine and transform the ways they teach and learn
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but repetitive...
I felt this book was interesting but repetitive. Throughout the book Parker Palmer used the idea of truth as a means to develop a relationship and a healthy educational environment. I continually felt that I wanted new information.

From a Catholic standpoint, one of the best works I have ever read on the relationship you want to have and should have with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Phillip Yancy does a superb job of bringing the reader face to face with Jesus Christ from a fresh perspective. As Pastors, we must understand the culture we live in to minister to that culture effectively (in the worldnot of the world).Yancy effectively views the life of Christ from thatperspective!

5-0 out of 5 stars way underrated
This is the best book I've read so far on the history of theories of religion. (To be fair, I've only read a few others.) It's definitely the best introduction to the basic theories, kinds of theories, and theorists that I'm aware of. (The one book that might compare is Sharpe's history of comparative religion: I haven't read it and you might check it out in addition to this one.)
3-0 out of 5 stars Theory of Religion
Aptly titled "Seven Theories", the book's format summarizes a brief history, theories, and critique of seven influential thinkers who have made a contribution to the study of religion. However, the title would have been better had it been the Seven Theories of Religion but Only Three Really Good Ones.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a very good, even-handed look at some of the great thinkers of the last 150 years, and what they thought about the phenomenon of religion, whether Judaism, Christianity, Taoism, polytheism, etc..Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars there are reasons for faith, faith does not have to be blind
This is a pretty good treatment of the rationality of some core christian beliefs. Now there is certainly more to christian beliefs than rational explanation for those beliefs, there are the very important elements of emotion, character, love, faithand the like. However, just because the christian faith is a faith, this does not automatically make it completely opposed to reasons for that faith.Faith and reason are not necessarily foes, it is quite possible for reason to "serve" faith. This book seeks to show this being done in regards to several subjects of importance to christian belief such as the existence of God.Now, I have read many, many sophisticated philosophical treatments dealing with the subject of "proofs" and/or "non-proofs" for the existence of God.I have read from some of the top thinkers/philosophers/theologians from ancient times, and on up to modern times. The treatment given to the rational defense for the existence of God in this book is simply profound and profoundly simple.Don't miss this book if for any other reason than this.It takes several chapters to build up to it, but once the book gets to it, it is absolutely pivotal and pointed, with razor sharp logic. If you are into philosophy, check out the same author's concise treatment on philosophy over the ages, it is called Consequences of Ideas. For a great concise treatment of the nature of the biblical God, the same author has another fantastic work by the title of The Character of God.It may seem as though I'm raving a bit about R.C. Sproul, and perhaps I am a bit, but it's not that I blindly follow him and his thought, or any one else for that matter, but Sproul really does make very good sense on several theological/philosophical concepts. Thanks Dr. Sproul.

4-0 out of 5 stars A RESTORATION OF FAITH
Outstanding! For any and all, christian and non-christian that hold to the notion that faith and reason are opposites of each other, I highly recommend this book.I have always been a christian however this book revealed truths to me that have stimulated a new and revitalized reason for believing. It also has revealed to me the half-truths that permeate the philisophical world and has helped me understand where many of the false notions and concepts dealing with the existence of God originated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Defending Your Faith: An Introduction to Apologetics
Mention the word Apologetics to your average Christian and know what happens? At best, you get that deer-in-the-headlights gaze as a response. At worst, you're told that Apologetics has to do with being sorry. Granted, if Christian Apologetics were about being remorseful, Dr. R.C. Sproul (Sr.) would write a read-worthy book on the subject. Truth be told, Sproul couldn't be boring if he tried. Christian Apologetics, however, is about providing a rational defence of Christianity's truth claims.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Testament Review
Just a few chapters into this book, I could already tell that this will not only be an asset for a class I am currently attending on the Synoptic Gospels, but more importantly, an asset to my personal library that I will be able to refer to for years to come.

2-0 out of 5 stars A College Religion Textbook -- Not for Believers
This book is written for a college religion environment. It is patently secular and is unsatisfactory as a choice for a believing student.5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, thorough, excellent introduction
I have the 3rd edition. And, I found this book to be a godsend. It is clear and thorough, and relatively easy to read. It contains a lot of information, and generally conforms to mainstream points of view. There are a lot of books about the New Testament which are much more difficult to read. You can read this one straight-through, or just dip into particular chapters.Yes, it is not a book to reinforce faith; but, that's not its purpose. This is a book for the general reader or student. - WGL ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Evolution and Process Theology
The approach advocated by Haught to dealing with the implications of evolution is one of "engagement" which he describes as "taking evolution into the very center of theological reflection on the meaning of life, of God, and of the universe." [I question the "center" characterization because it implies that those who in the past or now lack understanding of the evolutionary idea could not be at the center. A better characterization would be that it amplifies and deepens our understanding of what has or should have always been at the center. And one should also note that we are talking only about the center of "theological reflection," not the center of religious or spiritual life, which is something quite different.] At one level, this engagement is seen as a development of "natural theology" which has generally been disregarded in modern times. Scientists especially have pointed to the connection between cosmic origins which cannot be explained by evolution and the conditions of the evolution which produced life, however apparently indeterminate the process. They point out, as Kauffman noted, the extreme improbability of the precise physical conditions and laws of the universe at the time of creation such that life as we know it was possible. By carrying back the intelligent design argument to the big bang they make it more credible but without removing the difficulties of the apparent arbitrariness of biological development.
2-0 out of 5 stars Repitious
This is a compendium of several articles. Haught makes the same argument over and over again - that God loves the world so much that he is willing to leave it alone to determine it's own destiny. He offers little in the way of evidence of this assertion. It's an interesting idea, but it doesn't need an entire book - the first one or two chapters make the point.

2-0 out of 5 stars Three "Ds" and a distant deity
Up front, let us grant that Haught gets a few things straight. He acknowledges the impact Darwin has had on our view of life. And the supernatural. Many of Darwin's successors declared natural selection signalled the end of theism. That terminal judgment will be addressed in this book, but he warns that theology must still "come to grips" with the "opulence of evolution". From this opening he seeks to create a new theology. In order to launch this enterprise, Haught must sweep away some obstructions.Among these obstacles is the wave of "intelligent design" [which is neither] - Michael Behe's excuse for failing to understand how natural selecton works.Haught dismisses Behe with ease, claiming the idea "ignores novelty".So far, so good.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Didache-Great Translation, Gear Analysis
This book is required reading in our Permanent Diaconate training program.I found it to be a very easy read without any of the difficulties of ancient language to get in the way of your reading or understanding.I found myself saying "Yes, of course!I know that!" as I read every line, but the key to understanding the greatness of this text is to remember that it was written before any of the canonical scriptures in today's Bible. It was written down after many years of being passed from small early Christian group to another. It was really a training manual for newcomers to Christian communities.
4-0 out of 5 stars Didache: A Most Disputed Early Church Manual

5-0 out of 5 stars A spiritual gem!
If you are interested in understanding Jesus better, and you've already studied the gospels in depth, I highly recommend reading the Didache. It re-words the teachings of Jesus in the language of another group of early Christinas. This gives those of us who have read the gospels a million times a fresh appreciation of Jesus' teachings and the variety of early Christian interpretations. As a result I felt a spiritual bond with these early followers who were trying to pass the teachings of Jesus on, just like I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential for anthropology and religious studies students
Jonathan Z. Smith is the greatest and most interesting theorist of religion today. In this book Smith analyzes theories of his famous academic predecessors and voices his concerns with the issues in classification and nomology of religion. Smith is concerned with the ways in which folk psychology affects our perception of "religion" and "religious". He argues that the very concept of "religion" is a second-order term invented by post-Enlightenment scholars and therefore any attempts at defining "religion" should be abandoned.

"Spiritual Direction and the Care of Souls" guides the reader on a historical journey exploring the depths of ancient spiritual direction. Editors Moon and Benner gather experts from seven classic Christian traditions (most of whom had written similar articles in earlier editions of "The Journal of Psychology and Theology"). Using the grid of Clebsch and Jaekle's "sustaining, healing, reconciling, and guiding," these authors explain the philosophy and process of spiritual direction as practiced over the past 2000 years of Church history.
