Editorial Review

This true story about the love between a spiritual mentor and his pupil has soared to the bestseller list for many reasons. For starters: it reminds us of the affection and gratitude that many of us still feel for the significant mentors of our past. It also plays out a fantasy many of us have entertained: what would it be like to look those people up again, tell them how much they meant to us, maybe even resume the mentorship? Plus, we meet Morrie Schwartz--a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf. And finally we are privy to intimate moments of Morrie's final days as he lies dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Kudos to author and acclaimed sports columnist Mitch Albom for telling this universally touching story with such grace and humility. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brought back feelings....
This book was definitely one of those works where you can identify with what they are going through, yet you still have something to learn. I am a cargiver for a lady who has a disease almost identical to that of ALS (Lou Gehrigs) and the symptoms he describes in this book are ones that I am facing everyday I work with her.
1-0 out of 5 stars Tuesdays At Morrie's, Fridays At The Bank
This book is not inspiring, it is unfortunate.Morrie sounded like a great man who knew how to live his life. However, it is unfortunate that media vultures like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Koppel, and the author (another Oprah-manufactured "celebrity" like Dr. Phil) took everything that was probably special about this man and trivialized his words, commercialized his life, and exploited him and his values purely for financial gain.Albom mentions that the advance money for the book paid for Morrie's medical bills...what about all the money after he died?Hmm...he kind of left that part out.Seems that Mitch didn't really learn that much about greed from his old professor after all, which makes him sort of a hypocrite. What could have been a very special book in the hands of a competent author, instead gets a 200-page shlock treatment, from a sixth-grade caliber sports-writer (who apparently can't write many words longer than two syllables) that is watered down so that the masses can swallow it without too much critical thought. If I'd have known this was one of "Oprah's Picks" I wouldn't have even bothered with it, but I have also heard so much praise for this book that I figured it was at least worth a read.It wasn't.It was not inspiring, it was trite, contrived, shallow, preachy, poorly written...which seems to be a trademark of all of Albom's books.Morrie, you deserved better and I hope you are resting peacefully.I suppose it is good that this book is at least inspiring people, but at the same time you have to wonder about the types of people who would be inspired by this simple-minded shlock.Anyone raised in any decent, civilized background probably knew all this stuff already.I think the only people on this earth who have a true sense of what Morrie was about are his surviving friends, family, cohorts and students.I felt no connection to Morrie with this tacky treatment of a powerful subject, which is very unfortunate.I agree with another review that said that if you want some really great, inspiring words, read the Bible, Koran, Torah, etc. and keep away from this tacky book.Heck, read Siddhartha, thats probably a much better choice.Mitch, your grade on this thesis is an "F -"

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifetime with Morrie
As I sit down to write this review I find myself not looking into the book to see what I wrote in the margins, but trying to remember what I learned from the book.I once had a professor tell me "Shawn, you will never remember what the text tells you, but you will remember what the book taught you".This is one of those types of books and as you are reading it, you feel like you are a part of the story.Throughout the story Morrie tries to relay some of the lessons he has learned, and after reading the book I have realized that they are the most important kind of lessons: lessons on living life.I am not being vague about the content of this story in hopes of enticing you to read this, but I simply want you to sit down with this book without any expectations.Have a relationship with it and it will teach you amazing things. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars celebration
We use this book in a training for juveniles - maximum prisoners! It is a great celebration every week when we discuss the issues of the Celebration of discipline. Most of the guy's are just for one year Christians, and know nothing about these issues. We thank God and Richard Foster for the great Service they give to "our Boys". 5-0 out of 5 stars Celebration of Disciple
When I first heard of this book I thought the title was an oxymorom. there never has been much celebration when I am being disciplined. But it was required reading, so I read it. It is wonderful. I'm sure it will take 2-3 readings to get it all absorbed, but even reading it once has changed my attitudes and my own practices in living for Christ. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and theologically sound guide to spiritual disciplines
The reasons that I have recommended Celebration of Discipline to so many people over the years are 1) the book fully explains each of the disciplines, giving their biblical foundations and their practice in the church over the years, 2) the book is theologically sound, and 3) the "how to" aspects are fully and clearly explained for each of the disciplines.

Editorial Review

Blasphemy! Heresy! Who does this man think he is, claiming to speak directly to God?! Jesus did it, Muhammad did it, the Jewish prophets did it, but none of their Gods had the sardonic wit or raw verve of Prophet Walsch's God. Neale Donald Walsch isn't claiming to be the Messiah of a new religion, just a frustrated man who sat down one day with pen in his hand and some tough questions in his heart. As he wrote his questions to God, he realized that God was answering them... directly... through Walsch's pen. The result, far from the apocalyptic predictions or cultic eccentricities you might expect, turns out to be matter-fact, in-your-face wisdom on how to get by in life while remaining true to yourself and your spirituality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New thoughts for an "old" Christian
I thought I had heard every angle, every "sermon" topic in my 40 years of being a Christian and growing up in the faith.Miller managed to make me see things in a new light...from an undiscovered angle.I was moved and awed by many of his insights. As I read, my family was in the car together on a trip.I found myself reading many of his anecdotes outloud to my 10 & 13 year old children. They enjoyed his story about "Pete", the totally dorky kid Miller knew in school. It led to a great discussion about nerds that my own kids knew, and what really makes a person popular, and is it really so important?
4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read
Donald Miller's "Searching for God Knows What" is a worthwhile read for dedicated followers of Christ.Mr. Miller has an unusual way of making Christians think outside the common culture of modern Christianity. He does this with a confrontational and non-traditional style, as well as a non-conservative social/political perspective, which are considered irreverent by more pious members of the Christian community. All and all his style and sound biblical interpretation have inspired me as he presents many profound truths and inequities that are common in the modern Christial community.I recommend this book, as well as his first big hit, Blue Like Jazz.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why Jen Galicinski is a great reviewer.
Jennifer is really cool. She is an ESL teacher in Busan, SOuth Korea right now, but is actually from Toronto. I got to know her about 3 weeks ago, and I think she's fantastic. She has a great smile and cute eyes. She really Don Miller alot, which makes me a bit jealous, but that's cool. I'm not sweatin' it. I enjoyed her review. To be honest, I skimmed it a bit. But I trust her judgment. Although she doesn't know how to spell "gnawing." She spelled it "knawing," which had me laughing a bit. Anyway, I may see her in january. We'll probably go snowboarding if the weather permits. She has a cute, funny Canadian accent, you knowm like "Sooory," and "eh?" and "tuh-more-ow." Anyway, I think she's alright. Check her out sometime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fred Factor
We purchased "The Fred Factor" to use as part of an all day retreat in our department.During the earlier part of the day, we discussed the previous fiscal year results, our plans for the current year and then used questions on the book for discussion of what it would be like to be a "Fred" and work and live with people like him.All were requested to read the book before the day, and so it proved a helpful backdrop to the focus of our day.Our groups had some interesting perspectives...great tool for team building!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Self-Help/Success Book for Christian Women
The Confident Woman is a great book for Christian women who feel a calling to do more in their lives (regardless of their age). Joyce leads you through claiming your confidence, becoming bold without being overbearing, and overcoming fear in order to succeed in life.In the beginning of the book she covers Adam vs. Eve issues and weaves the message that men and women are and should be partners not enemies.Keep your bible with you for this book as you may want to cross reference, although most biblical passages are included in The Confident Woman, some are only mentioned to be referenced.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book encouraging its target audience to have a positive, "can-do" attitude
In "The Confident Woman: Start Today Living Boldly and Without Fear," the writer Joyce Meyer encourages women to start thinking positively and more confidently about their abilities. She provides a set of seven guidelines that are designed to help them accomplish just that. There are also passages in the book showing that any woman can be an independent, fearless leader and she wastes no time in proving to them that even God has their support, as indicated by the inclusion of several Biblical passages, in which they learn how God feels about them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good inspirational book
I purchased this for my grandson' birthday and read it before i gave it to him.I am not very sports minded but it was a well written biography of a spectacular human being who is doing a good job of showing young men what makes a great man in God's eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molding Americas Youth
A must read for all public and private school athletic coaches. This excellent book epitomizes the characteristics deemed necessary to assist and mold America's young people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I played college football and pro baseball.I have very vivid memories of my coaches since childhood.I had a coach in high school, Larry Book, who made a big impression on me.He was great and I remember him fondly, though I liked him more after I left than I did when I played for him.As good as he was, we never talked about life things, real important things.Joe Ehrman's coaching style I've never really heard of or come across. He explains what it means to be a man, to love, to give, in words that I never really heard before, certainly not from a football coach.Even if you've never played football, this true story is one you'll want to read and share with others.I have multiple copies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK
THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE I AM ABLE TO SEE CLEAR AND KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT LIFE PEOPLE HAVE TO JUST BE OPEN MINDED AND LET THE LIGHT IN
5-0 out of 5 stars a work in progress
I first became familiar with a Course in Miracles in the early 90's by attending classes for it at a Unity Church. Of course, without reading it had no real idea what it was about. Purchased the book soon after, read the text and started the workbook; but, I stopped at about lesson 100 because of a major life change. It was probably just as well because I really don't think I understood it clearly. A year ago I read Gary Renard's book "The Disappearance Of The Universe" which really brought it down to a human level. I started the workbook again (currently on lesson 268) and it has changed my life. My mind is much quieter, much more free of mindless chatter. Don't get me wrong, I still have those crazy days. I highly recommend everyone buying this book and keep it on hand for when you are ready for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars I hope you all find help
because if you think this is the way to go, you are truly in need of it.First, a careful reading of the Bible mentions false prophets and such (after end point of the Bible) but otherwise says nothing occurs till time for "rapture" and 2nd coming.Unless you want to claim we're in second coming, people who hear from Jesus are either deluded or false prophets. You are free to decide which. On that basis, however, the ideas espoused in the book are either pointless, useless (if delusional), or meant to pull people to the Anti-C if false prophecy.Again, your decision. (Free-will - remember and apply it !!!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book From Ms. Garrett!
I have read several of Ms. Garrett's books. They always make you feel as if you are walking in her footsteps.I, being an X-member of an Old Order Amish sect, was curious to see if there were any differences within her sect and mine.I learned alot from, "Born Amish."For my sect was a little different-which isn't shocking when there are so many Amish sects.I can't wait until she publishes another book. For she is a remarkable writer.I always recommend her books.I also recommend, "My Amish Heritage", by Ruth Irene Garrett; and, "True Stories of X-Amish: Banned-Shunned-Excommunicated", by Ottie Garrett and Ben Garrett.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
The book "Born Amish"is truly a beautiful book about women's roles in an Amish family in an Amish community.I read this lovely book in one setting.I hope there are more books on the way as detailed and honest as this one.I wish women everywhere could read this outstanding book.I enjoyed Ruth's first book "Crossing Over",but this is the one that details the facts of being "Born Amish"and growing up Amish.May God bless you Ruth Garrett. ... I first discovered Max McLean reading the Bible online at another website.I found reading the Bible myself with the audio reinforcement of Max McLean reading to be an excellent way to read God's Word. After reading at my computer I found the best value for this product at Amazon.I bought one for myself.I took it into my Wednesday night Bible study and the group really liked it.When I was away on vacation they pleaded with me to bring the Audio Bible back. That was enough encouragement for me to buy a copy for the class.I also sent one to my Aunt who is awaiting delivery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Humor is truly God-given
And there's plenty of it to be found in Higg's work. This book is truly unique in several ways, one being that it's practically an anthology as well as a guidebook. Also, Higgs blessedly does NOT paint unrealistically good-girl pictures of what we should be like; her brutally honest recounting of her past is part of this. I found her transformation of old stories into new absolutely brilliant and insightful and her humor and bluntness often hilarious. Inspite of her occasional gushing of Christ (can you blame her?) and her extremely affectionate terms of endearment for the reader, Higgs never came across to me as condescending or fake. In fact, she's more real than certain people I've actually met. Some female Christian authors give the impression of being either the dance-through-daisies type or the whip-in-hand type that you can't at all relate to, but Higgs is wonderfully flesh and blood as well as Godly, which not everyone can accomplish! One feminist claimed that Higgs believes in women being submissive to men, but let's give her a little more credit here! While she does make a comment about wives submitting to their husbands, she only does this once and never says that women should be submissive in general. If there's one thing Higgs is not, it's a doormat. I did take away one star because I felt like she occasionally (in both her Bad Girl books) connected personal beliefs with Christian ones a little too much(I do not agree that nudity is inherently sinful or that morning-after pills are nasty), but we all do that to a certain point and Higgs still for the most part manages to steer clear of preachiness. If you'd like a down-to-earth and entertaining Christian guide, I highly recommend both "Bad Girl" books as well as "Mad Mary" (read the latter with a bunch of tissues, though). Higgs is truly in a class by herself :) God Bless you, Liz!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most relevant book I've ever read
I bought this book more than a year before I read it. It sat on my shelf gathering dust until I finally found the courage to actually read it. Once I started, I couldn't stop. I read it for two days straight, grabbing it every chance I could.
5-0 out of 5 stars Witty, fun, real and relevant
We have a small group of women meeting once a week and reading this book. I love the way Liz starts each chapter by retelling the story of the woman the way it may look if it was happening today and gives us a new insight into that life. She then goes step by step through the Bible verses and does a study on them - showing insights and ways that it relates to us today. The questions at the end of the chapter are good as well and the whole diverse group of us is learning... There are different types of women in the Bible and each of us relates to at least one of them! I like the catagories: Bad to the bone, Bad for a season and Bad for a moment. Witty, fun, real and relevant to me today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Analysis
This book is a fantastic analysis of our culture's emasculating effect on men. The author has a fantastic solution for tapping into our nature and releasing the man inside.
3-0 out of 5 stars Review of Wild at Heart by John Eldredge
The author makes a strong case for men to stop trying to fit into a neat mold of what men are supposed to be like, how they are supposed to act, etc...He alleges that men have been asked to be nice to the point that men lose their masculinity and become instead more feminine. He alleges that this type of behavior is self-defeating for men and eventually leads to their unhappiness and then also the unhappiness of their women and their families.

Some of the most dangerous ideas that are implicitly or explicitly advanced in this book include the following:

Pema is very funny and personable. She cuts throught it and gets to the point with excellent real world examples. What she gives on this CD is something that you can use everyday. Her discussion on "Shenpa" was worh the price of the CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Changing Your Perspective
Don't go into situations with specific expectations or you may end up frustrated and angry. The book helps you learn to roll with the punches. We find ourselves in such a rush and that puts extra pressure on ourselves (and the others around us).
5-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to be Buddhist to Get a Lot From This.
I found myself getting stuck in repetitiousthought patterns even after decades of meditation practice. This audio book is one of the best teachings I've ever heard and can apply to anyone with an open mind who is ready to find thekeys to get unstuck.I speak from my experience and the experience everyone I know who listens, to it.I hear things like "life altering changes"."Getting Unstuck" is awesome. Done with a good sense of humor and lots of down to earth wisdom,Pema Chodron has outdone herself with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smoking stuff
This guy must have been smoking plenty in order to create his lofty and interesting theories. He has developed his ideas from his first book "The power of now". It's very entertaining for a student of zen buddhism to learn about Tolle's ideas and thoughts. For a thoroughly understanding of this text you will benefit learning about zen. Steven Hagen's "Buddhism Plain and Simple" is an excellent source that strips out Buddha's teaching into it's core, without BS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review by my Ego
As I was flying back to Vancouver tonight, I finished this book on the plane. I watched in amazement as my mind was waiting in excitement to just get home, sit down in front of my computer and write a review of this book. My mind almost raced at the thought of writing this review, collecting with amazing speed all the merits and shortcomings of this amazing book. But something was different. My excitement was tainted! My Ego, in his hasty planning for a grandiose review didn't even realize that it was being "watched". It happened before, but this time the "watching" went on for much longer and much deeper than before. Boy, my Ego is in trouble now! :) LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars Read About the Power of Print to Change Lives
Books change lives and the stories in this title bear repeated witness of this fact. In each chapter, a well-known author talks about the power of the printed page to transform life. Each story is different and unique to the individual. I love this book and discovered new insights into several authors who I appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK!55 PEOPLE TELL THE STORY OF THE BOOK THAT CHANGED THEIR LIFE
This book is one of the best I have ever read, I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days!I was sad when I finished it.The stories were all so exciting.I couldn't wait to read some of their recommended books!I do hope there will be more editions of this book to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Look At What People Read And Why
I've read a number of books and articles about reading. I love to read and find it fascinating to see what others read and how the books have influenced their lives. More often than not, the list includes the same titles. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and THE CATCHER IN THE RYE are usual favorites. GREAT EXPECTATIONS and THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV are often mentioned by more adventurous readers and of course, a work of Shakespeare has to be included on such a list. I planned on passing by YOU'VE GOT TO READ THIS BOOK since I figured I already know what's going to be in it, but when I looked in the back of the book, glanced at the titles, I was impressed by the variety of contributors, the wide array of books selected, and the stories that followed. Each contributor selects a book, tells a personal story and the way the book impacted their life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Wordy
This book was a little TOO wordy for my taste. I am sure to ALL the FANS of the Hick's absolutely love it, however I did not. That's just my opinion. I am off to the next book. I prefer something that is straight to the point and lewss fluff, if you will.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Amazing Power of Drivel
As a university professor of human resource development and an Anglican brother, The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent is pure drivel and has no redeeming value whatsoever. If you enjoy new-age fantasy, get a copy from your local library otherwise do not waste your money. If you are serious about spiritual growth you might read works such as The Rule of Benedict: Insights for the Ages, or the best selling book on spiritual development of all time.. it's called the Bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful resource
The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent is another wonderful resource on the Law of Attraction. While it doesn't contain as many "new" insights as I had hoped, the material is (as always) thought provoking and energizing. An easy read with outstanding examples of how to apply the principles of attraction in your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration by Date or by Topic
This calendar-style book has much to offer in short, easily adaptable entries for each day of the year. The obvious approach would be to set aside a few minutes to read and reflect on each day's entry. However, the author has generously offered an option via the topic index. Either choice is suitable for individuals or small groups. The format is a selection from Augustine's writings, containing an appropriate heading and the citation, followed by a brief reflection.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works
Been studying this book with my Network Marketing team. Was so good I had to read ahead! In my current job I've been applying this and the results have been absolutely noticable even by my boss!
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for leadership development
As a university student, I initially purchased this book to review for an assignment in a Leadership Theory course, but the value I received from this text was greater than expected. Maxwell's reputation as a leadership expert is one of the reasons I chose this book, but another reason was that this book focuses not only on the concepts of leadership in general but mainly on personal leadership development. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the study of leadership or developing their own leadership abilities. I found John C. Maxwell's work to be very inspirational and very applicable to real-world applications. After having contemplated what leadership truly means and how it affects us on a daily basis, it is easier to see that its impact is all around us in some form or to some degree. As Maxwell puts it, "everything rises and falls on leadership," and anyone with the desire to do so can become a better leader. This book explains how to do it effectively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite short read on leadership
I have studied the subject of leadership for several years and continue to return to this book as the best short-read on the subject ever written. I read it at least once a year just to refresh myself. The stories are well chosen and the principals are sound. It is not an in-depth treatise but provides an excellent foundation for understanding the difference between leadership and management - which is greatly lacking today. ... Read more
