Editorial Review

The old Quaker adage, "Let your life speak," spoke to author Parker J. Palmer when he was in his early 30s. It summoned him to a higher purpose, so he decided that henceforth he would live a nobler life. "I lined up the most elevated ideals I could find and set out to achieve them," he writes. "The results were rarely admirable, often laughable, and sometimes grotesque.... I had simply found a 'noble' way of living a life that was not my own, a life spent imitating heroes instead of listening to my heart."Read more

This book shows that it is never too late to do a little soul searching to discover your life's purpose. The author recounts his own personal struggle for self discovery and fulfillment. This book is a good read with some food for thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Answers are Within
Although "Let Your Life Speak" would be considered a small book, it's definitely big on insights, ideas, and thoughts to ponder.
5-0 out of 5 stars the book let my life speak
I am a person who is looking for my vocation.I am confused and lost in my life. With the help of the book, I know more about the inner self. The path that the author experienced helps persons like us to face our inner self in different demension. There is one thing that alarmed me much: the author told us that depression is not our enemy but actually is our friend who leads us to God. The book explains very good about this point and let me have a new prospective on depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Spirituality down to Reality
As someone who has always appreciated and been intrigued by the different religions of the world and the similarities between them, I love how this book makes them all relevant to my life & how I live it.One thing that most impresses me about this book is the author's thoroughness and conviction. In The Power of Now, Tolle basically describes the essence of Being - what it is to be in the now, and what it isn't.He successfully does this by addressing the major life forces that affect our ability to be present - the mind, the body, death, time, space, etc. - without straying from the heart of the book. His knowledge, appreciation and respect for so many of the ancient spiritual teachings, from Jesus, the Bible, Zen, Buddhism, Taoism, and more, is enlightening in itself and supports his message very effectively.Although I didn't agree with every concept in the book, I appreciate the thoughtfulness and compassion with which each is presented.Tolle is a true spiritual teacher who has much to offer in the practice of self-discovery.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book I go to when I want to become still.
Previous to the first reading of this book, the principles of present moment living, quieting the mind, and being still to become in touch with my intuition or the wisdom of the universe are some I have practiced, along with others, that have enabled me to experience serenity in my life regardless of the circumstances. Though many of the concepts of this book were not new to me, I find this book very valuable. It further expands the understanding of these concepts and adds its own voice to the discussion of these principles with great clarity. It is a book I have read many times and each time, though I may just read a page or two, it quiets my mind and I feel more peaceful.(In my second reading, it helped me to be more peaceful during a time when the doctors believed my son had an inoperable brain tumor.) I have since moved on to read his next book - A NEW EARTH and I am on my third reading. I highly recommend this one as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read It NOW
Francesco Petrarch wrote, "It is appointed to us to lose the present in expectation of the future," or--he might have added--in fretting over the past. Though Eckhart Tolle's message isn't new--it's at least as ancient as the Hindu and Hebrew scriptures--his presentation speaks directly to the modern mind. We are so bombarded by memories, momentary incoming messages, and fears of the future that we lose the only part of life that truly exists: the present moment. His subtitle says it all: "A guide to spiritual enlightenment." You will feel better immediately when you follow his lead into the now. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Rarely does a book come along that tackles a perennially difficult human issue with such clarity and intelligence. Harold Kushner, a Jewish rabbi facing his own child's fatal illness, deftly guides us through the inadequacies of the traditional answers to the problem of evil, then provides a uniquely practical and compassionate answer that has appealed to millions of readers across all religious creeds. Remarkable for its intensely relevant real-life examples and its fluid prose, this book cannot go unread by anyone who has ever been troubled by the question, "Why me?" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kushner Non-Academic Video
If you are looking for the academic lecture video by this same title (the one hour lecture delivered at UNC), this isn't it. This is a shorter video, with a pragmatic focus on individual persons and families dealing with catastrophic loss. A good primer for health care workers, but does not have the broad academic, philosophic, and theological applications that the earlier lecture video has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this book BEFORE reading mumbo jumbo
I wish more people could see that their humanity in the world rather than try to be God, or relentlessly seek answers when none exist. This is a brilliant discourse on the sadder parts of the human experience. Rather than try to alleviate pain by trying to find out why a tragedy happened, etc ... it is often more healing to also see the humanity of an event when no real explanation is possible. Bad things happen to good people and vice-versa. This world is complex and simple at the same time. But most of all, this book is a blessing against the current wave of New Age blame game mumbo jumbo...
4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, well done and thoughtful
This book is an easy and enjoyable read about a difficult philosophical topic. It deals with the practical reality of the exisence of evil and ties it to a combination of random chance and people's free will. That is the underlying thesis and deep philosophical arguments are avoided.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Course and Marianne
I have known and known of Marianne Williamson for several years, and know of the inner battles she had until she discovered the Course on Miracles. I believe this book is good for those who have lost sight of our purpose on Earth, and those who may need a swift kick of unconditional love to get them on the right path.Much like Louise Hay, Rayna Gangi, Andrew Weil, and others, Marianne tries to show us that love is possible, necessary, and expected.

It would be nice if everyone in the world could read this book, it may be a more peaceful world.A Return to Love is a heart opening book on a path of inner healing.Another place to view inspirational work is the website SmileAcrossYourHeart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking - it will enhance your Bible reading
This is the best book I have encountered on the subject of biblical interpretation for the casual or semi-casual reader. It tackles a lot of difficult and potentially controversial subjects in a way that is comprehensible to almost any English speaker with a desire to learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Study
This is a no-nonsense, conservative approach to interpreting the Bible, focusing on what the Bible meant to the ancient audience as a springboard to what it means now.We have a tendency, at least I do, to do hermeneutics (what the Bible means to us) prior to exegesis (what the Bible meant originally). This book makes it clear that we are being copied on ancient literature, and that we have to be sure of what we are reading. Also, some of it is not even meant for direct application, like the book of Acts; even though many first time events took place then, it is not meant to be normative for the church of all time.In a word, the book appeals to a much less self-absorbed approach to studying the Bible.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Helpful
An older revision of this was one of my Bible College textbooks in the early 1980's.It's way better now...and it was very good then. For example, Fee gives clear minded, thoughtful approaches to every type of literature (genre) in the bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stevie B smacked me upside my head!
Stephen Baldwin is on fire for Jesus Christ, and boy this book sure makes it contagious! He is considerably younger than me in age, but he is also older and wiser andbiblically grounded. He makes Christianity dare I say, FUN! This is what new life is supposed to be like. His changed life is proof enough for me to believe he is the real deal. This is a book I intend to use to reach my unsaved kids. He speaks on their level and yet never wavers from The Truth. What a blessing.I read this book so fast because I was caught up in his excitement and enthusiasm for Christ.I want to get off my kester and DO SOMETHING for the Kingdom. I just pray I grow as bold as he has.Great read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Stephen!
Thank heavens for helping channel the lord's love, through your book, into my heart. You are an "unusual" blessing. I agree; what good is feeding starving third-world children if they don't accept Jesus Christ as their savior. They are bound to repeat the same mistakes under the influence of satan. Besides, its not like Jesus said he would return first to the downtrodden and the poor of spirit and riches. Oh wait. He did say that. Wait...I've figured it out. God created sleezy celebrity evangelical middle men to skew his own son's teachings, thus testing our faith that all human actions and words are the will of God. Everything is God's will! Everything! Amazing! I can do no wrong. Everything I say and do is part of God's predetermined plan, including my futile attempts to critique this silly pseudo-Christian crusade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and inspiring
This book is excellent and well written. Stephen Baldwin's testimony is awesome and the book itself is really a great manual on how to live the Christian life. It is also a great testimony to what God can do through a praying, Christian wife. I appreciate that he is willing to share the life that God delivered him from and also the daily struggles of living the Christian life. The chapter "Who's on First" is brilliant. This book gives glory to God and clearly testifies that the only real positive change we can have in our lives is in a born-again relationship with Jesus. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ***** Get the Message: "Stop Suffering and Start Living!" *****
Russell Targ, a physicist as well as paranormal researcher, and J. J. Hurtak, a Judeo-Christian and Buddhist spiritual teacher have written a book of great importance for the rest of us. As they suggest, it is today because we have leaders that are ignorant about our oneness with not only each other but the Creator, they make absurd statements that actually lead to war and untold suffering such as, "Those who are not with us are with the terrorists." The modern physics of nonlocality and remote viewing research all show our potential for experiencing expanded awareness that yield to a deeper understanding of why avatars like Jesus uttered: "If you see me, you have seen God." More so, these authors speak to why the Dalai Lama described Nagarjuna as one of the truly enlightened people of all times and places. Thus, Targ and Hurtak describe a peaceful and joyful path based on these teachings and graciously share them with all who have ears to hear and eyes to see this ultimate truth: "We are one global human being" as the shamans themselves declare worldwide. The Maya priest-shaman use the word "In La'kech," that translates as this profound realization in English, "I am another yourself." Read this book and stop suffering, then start living a self-empowered life now!
5-0 out of 5 stars The End of Suffering - A profound unity of science and spirit
For us, "The End of Suffering: Fearless Living in Troubled Times", is a book that unifies the greatest insights of the realms of quantum physics and the greater mystical teachings of the East. In these troubled times, when the synthetic self dominates the false image of society a new lotus of spiritual-scientific wisdom emerges from the muddy depths of the confused web of hyper-specialized reality. Nagarjuna talks to us of the middle way, which takes us into hyper-spatial/temporal realities where we learn to bring the rest of the greater 'Love' story into the sciences. If we as humanity are going to become the embryo gods the ancient scriptures talk about - the three jeweled lotus, then we need to understand the key concepts this book is saying. Which is that we are all interconnected and that our state of 'mind' plays a greater role than we where lead to believe. In the current super information age, universities and other educational organizationsare asking the question where to next? This book certainly does give a beautiful flow plan for new models of how our education and ultimately humanity must go, if we are to create a future of hope. For through the practical secrets of little gems in this book there shines now for us a hope for our future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timely Guide
Russell Targ, a nationally known physicist and consciousness researcher, and J.J. Hurtak, a similarly well-known philosopher of both Judeo-Christian and Buddhist traditions, have come together to offer modern readers a path through the maze of our culture's delusions to an inner-state of compassionate serenity. The authors' divergent expertise produces an interesting synergy, a good combination of philosophy and science which seems particularly apposite to understanding contemporary angst and suffering.Thewriting is gracious and the thinking clear. This is a book to read and consider carefully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Release your faith and LIVE!
The Barbarian Way: Unleash the Untamed Faith Within by Erwin Raphael McManus is a quick-reading devotional with enormous power.McManus looks at faith in a way I never have before. His faith is not a restrained, quiet faith, but an in-your-face strength that wants to change the world. He uses Scripture often to reinforce his views, as well as personal anecdotes both amusing and on occasion disturbing.I'm not sure that I'm ready to embrace the barbarian within me, but this book would make an excellent Bible study for youth. It encourages believers to break out of the box churches have imposed upon belief and truly live as Jesus meant us to.Enthralling reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Live the Adventure!
Erwin's straight forward style and honest stories made for a refreshing and encouraging read. If you want your life out of a "churchy" rut and back into God's adventure towards the world, The Barbarian Way is just the ticket.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kick in the Pants Christianity
So how can you be both Barbarian and Christian?Isn't becoming a more Christian person supposed to tame us and tone us down?McManus offers helpful and challenging insights into the reasons that the real vibrant counter-cultural Christianity modelled by Jesus has been toned down and domesticated. Then he challenges us to get back to the Barbarian Way of following Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power Of Love
This book is a testament to Our Lord Jesus Christ and how His love frees people from Satan's grasp.Mr. Shoebat was brought up learning to hate.In this book he stated, 'My lullibies and many of the poems we memorized were about flying body parts and rolling heads'.Sweet.This is the influence of Islam in Arab lands. He now preaches a different gospel. The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
There is a lot of excellent information - quotes from various sources, excerpts from the Koran, etc. - but I had expected a somewhat different book.I thought it would be about his experiences as a terrorist, what the terrorist organization was like from the inside, and his effort to remove himself from it.It really is a book about what Islam really is and then a long part at the end is an interpretation of End Time references in the Bible. There is nothing personal in the book.

I really liked the peaceful fun feeling you get while reading this book. Very informative and well written. The book itself is like a showpiece I leave it out for anyone to read. Getting in the Gap and Japa are very effective forms of meditation, and with Wayne's help you instantly achieve higher levels of meditation with out the years of sitting around humming.

After reading The Four Agreements, I felt that it is great to learn the four agreements V be impeccable with your word, dont take anything personally, dont make assumptions and always try your best. However, that book did not have enough practical ideas or skills to guide me decode our old agreements/emotional garbage, how to be aware and how to transform. This book has a practical guide to teach us how to live in the four agreements. It teaches us how to become aware and how to transform.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grounding Clarity, Simple Truth
This is an excellent book for anyone. Don Miguel shares a heartfelt vision of very fundemental and useful truths in a very practical way that is easy to understand and follow. His work also goes beyond the new-age people, and far beyond the pop-psych books, because he is the real deal. His connection with the indigenous traditions of his people gives his expressions an uncommon sincerity and authenticity. I guarantee it will help you, should you allow it. ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For growth and a challane read these.
This is an amazing Catholic meditation and daily reflection series. The seven volumes have daily readings for each day of the church year as well as volume 6 & 7 being special Feast Days. The readings draw heavily upon the writings of Josemaria Escriva the founder of Opus Dei, Pope John Paul II, and the daily readings from the common liturgy for that day. The Sundays have three sets of readings depending on if we are in year A, B, or C in the church readings. These devotions are all about 6 pages long and divided into 3 sections. They can be read all as a lump or part in the morning, midday and evening. I find that with every day there is so much meat in these devotions that I am already planning on reading them again next year.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Catholic daily meditation guide!
This series follows the gospel for the daily mass.If you don't have much time to read every day or attend daily mass this is for you!Just 15 minutes each morning will fill your mind and soul! You don't really need to read any other books if you faithfully read this. It's perpetual too so it'll last you many years!God Bless You!

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best Catholic spiritual reading available without exception.
I have been an avid reader of Catholic literature for the past twenty years, and have easily read hundreds of Catholic books. In the early years of this period I tended to focus on books about devotional practices (e.g. rosary), Mary, apparitions and the saints.Over time, I found myself not so much interested in abandoning these topics but wanting to build upon them with readings that also dealt with progress in the spiritual life, particularly those that seemed to understand human psychology and the various aspects of virtues required for advancement in the spiritual life.So few writers seemed to be able to provide such a comprehensive range of themes - Garrigou Lagrange's Three Ages of the Interior Life is an exception.I must confess that over this entire time I have been attracted to finding a single book or single multi-volume work that could meet all of my needs.I must say that the 7 volume In Conversation with God series has meet and exceeded this need.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misery in Print
Brian McLaren has no business writing a book about the message of Jesus, nevermind one that claims to reveal a 'secret message.' McLaren is not a theologian and not a historian. He shows no familiarity with Biblical languages, no familiarity of the secondary sources outside of the NT which would bring clarity to the context of the life of Christ, and no familiarity with the history of Gospel theology or criticism.

Have Christians everywhere misunderstood Jesus' message? 3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
McLaren's book is just a mediocre attempt to understand the message of Jesus and its implications for today. Surely, McLaren is right to put emphasis on Jesus' message of the kingdom of God. Some of the contours of this aspect of Jesus' teaching have been all too often neglected by fundamentalists and evangelicals.
