RENOVATION OF THE HEART: A READER ANALYSIS
5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
Dr. Willard is very thorough in his writing which makes for some strenuous reading, but remains very rewarding throughout.Dallas really drives the point home that "apprentice" is a superior term to "disciple" as far as our relationship to Christ should be.You realize that "putting on the character of Christ" is a cooperative process between you and God in that he supplies the grace enacted through our obedience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Getting remade.
This is thebest effort at understanding how we can think and talk about the process of transformation that I have ever read.It is not a light read, but a study book to work through as you put into practice some of the ideas on being still and getting fixed.I am a better disciple than I was, and a better spiritual counselor than I was. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a book!
I think this book is a must have for people who find themselves thinking about the future too much or may be 'lost' in their past. It helps give a better understanding of why it is important to live in the present and appreciate life on a day-to-day basis! I recommend this book as a great read and plan to give it as a gift to most of my friends!
5-0 out of 5 stars "Get" the precious present Chad
I completely disagree with Chad, I understand where you are coming from but I think you completely missed the point.I like this book because it tells you to move forward, to focus on what you are doing today because if you live today to the fullest then tomorrow when you look at your past you'll have no regrets. It says to enjoy the things that you have today rather than to ponder on the things that you do not have or may have had in the past. It also says not to live in the future because the future is not here yet, this should not be taken as a call to living on a whim but rather to live your today and take care of all that you need to today because that will make your tomorrow.Give it another try Chad, the person that spent 18.00 on it really cares about you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn about the here and now
As a parent, I read this book to my children from grade school through high school. The Precious Present and Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus ranked highest in my rituals of reading what I thoght was important. The Precious Present states simply that which many seem to lose sight of in the midst of a time which is wrought with demands and distractions. As a consultant, I read or referenced this book to clients to aid them in understanding the importance of being where they are at instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past. The book was always received well.Albeit the range could be wide - from just stopping to ponder the idea to big aha's of getting how powerful the here and now can be and therefore making whatever the best decision with the resources available. It's all we have, this present moment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That you should bear fruit!
Bruce Wilkinson does a masterful job of taking the reader through the parable of the vine and the branches in John 15. I appreciate his faithfulness to the words of Jesus' parable and his insight into the true meaning of this parable. This book gives the reader some very practical steps to take in order to draw closer to Christ and to be more fruitful in the Chritian life. I highly recommend this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great insights, but...
I was given this book for my birthday about two years ago. John 15, the passage on which this book was written, is a very important passage for ALL Christians. Wilkinson managed to write a very engaging and interesting book with great insights. I have benefited from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I find this book so inspirational and read something from it every day. Brother Lawrence has tremendous insight into the question of how to get closer to God.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately boring
I'm a very spiritual person and I was expecting this CD to provide daily inspiration and help me to remember the very few things that are important in life.Unfortunately, for me at least, the CD is rather boring and not very inspirational.I'm about 30 minutes in to it and have decided to stop listening to it.Fortunately I have a Christian radio station that does a lot more for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple but Powerful Message
This little book packs a wallop. It contains a simple but powerful message: to live in contact with God, one need only hold Him in mind, or carry on a mental conversation with Him. The reason why Brother Lawrence's book is so transforming is that one can feel that he practiced what he preached. As he describes the process of practicing the presence, the reader is drawn into the gossamer web of the author's own experience. To begin this practice, all we have to do is read this book. We are given a boost at the beginning; the rest is up to us. Take this book on retreat, or pick it up whenever you are feeling spiritually dry. It will open your heart and nurture your soul. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best Gift Ever...
I received this book as a gift for my birthday from a friend of mine, and had no clue what to expect when I read it. I sat down and read through it in one sitting and couldn't put it down. I then read it aloud to my boyfriend and my daughter and my son... and I sent excerpts of it to several of my online friends telling them they needed to buy this book. It's touching and emotional - but so powerful and beautifully written. I could not recommend this book enough - it's simply the best gift I've ever been given.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most remarkable book
The Invitation helped me understand how I can enhance my own life when I embrace all of life -- as it is -- not as I want it to be. I have sent copies to my friends, children and grandchildren.

This poem has resonated with me for several years now. I appreciated Mountain Dreamer's honest explanation into what was behind this powerful poem was. It is not often that we get such insight into what situations inspire such works of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerfully Inspiring Book
I was walking through a bit of a "desert" in my faith when I picked up this book. The author is very inciteful and I found the book to be life-changing.I found his use of scripture to be right on.I can't recommend this book enough. My passion for God has grown immensely.
3-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't relate, but the book may help some
Everything that the authors consider important is written in capital letters in this book. For example, the Sacred Romance is our relationship with God and the Message of the Arrows is every negative thought, emotion, or word which we receive while living in this world.I had a hard time relating to the concept of thespiritual void which the authors seem to think will enter the life of every believer.Certainly, all Christians have periods when their faith seems dry and God seems far away, but it doesn't feel to me as dramatically awful as the authors portray it.I agree that living for this world will bring frustration and "false gods" who will never live up to what we are promised in the way of happiness.I also agree that being busy at church and in life is not what God wants for us; rather He is interested in having a close relationship with us.Somehow the authors flowery language, and overly-dramatic references did not draw me in, but rather turned me off. They speak of the Heart and Romance, but never really define it or make many suggestions about how the Sacret Romance can be achieved, other than to "abide with Him".Fortunately, many of the reviewers seem to have found some real answers in this book, and for that I thank God.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking book
This is a great book. It is rich in many biblical concepts, yet it lacks in others. Mainly that of grace. The author seems to miss the concept that faith in the cleansing blood of Christ ALONE provides us salvation, not faith in Christ + following all of the laws perfectly until death. While following all of the laws is very important (and the lack of will have consequences), The whole reason Christ came is because I cannot keep all of the laws. Christ himself spoke of the erring ways of the Pharisees and Saducees of being so focused on not breaking any laws, while not walking in grace from, and love towards God.

Editorial Review

Do you think your child is special? Well, perhaps he or she is! Self-help professionals Lee Carroll and Jan Tober have collected essays by dozens of doctors, counselors, and other childhood experts that seem to document the arrival on earth of a newly evolved species of human kiddie referred to here as an "indigo" child. The 10 most common traits are: 1.) They come into the world with a feeling of royalty. 2.) They have a feeling of deserving to be here. 3.) Self-worth is not a big issue. 4.) They have difficulty with authority by ritual or without explanation. 5.) They simply will not do certain things. 6.) They get frustrated with systems that don't require creative thought. 7.) They often see better ways of doing things. 8.) School is often difficult for them and they can seem antisocial. 9.) They will not respond to guilt-trip discipline. 10.) They are not shy about letting you know what they need. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Half-baked... just like "gifted child" programs, no support for adults?
The problem I have with a book like this isn't necessarily the premise. I agree there are some kids with a profound amount of energy, intuition, and desire to change the world. The problem I do have is with the movements as a whole, that fill a kid's head with extremely lofty ideas... and then what?

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not what expected
Very encouraging stories yet I prefer to see those positive stories tight to the hand of of the Lord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for doctors?
The stories of real communication in this book will stay with me for a long time.I wish Dr. Remen's examples of listening and being present would be required reading for medical residents and practicing doctors, especially in this time of increasingly computerized medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read and receive a blessing
This is a great book. It affirms that healing has a spiritual dimension. Some of the stories touched me in such a way that I will remember them all of my life. I read this book as part of a book club; it generated good discussion. I plan to give away copies to friends and family. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from a serious illness. It is both hopeful and real, two qualities difficult to combine in spiritual writing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A very shallow puddle
About 8 months ago, during a very bad "flu-experience", I had a great afternoon reading all the negative reviews on 'The Alchemist' and this little gem. And although I was warned, I just HAD to find out for myself (some stubborn people just never learn, do they): could this book really be as awful as these reviewers said it is? And the answer is YES.
4-0 out of 5 stars A quest that is as ancient as it is modern.
Coelho is a master of the words and he doesn't fail to show that even in this book. His storytelling is flowing and never overwhelming or boring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Coelho's writing can only be described as Genuis.Hes a natural and will certainly touch your heart, mind, and soul.He inspired and motivated me with every word that he has written throughout the years.Word in a review cannot begin to describe the writing of this brilliant man.All of his books are highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Willard is always good with Christian advice
There's lots of hoopla concerning hearing God in Christian culture.Dallas comes to this problem with clear mind and normal sense. He's not hysterical or unnaturally jubilant about it.He deals with it intelligently but with Holly Spirit as well.Oh how I wish there were more teachers like Dallas in contemporary American Christianees culture.Very good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book!
I found the book to be most helpful. It followed up Spirit of the Disciplines rather nicely, although it didn't get anywhere near the buzz that book did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dallas is always good

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaty enough to read this year and next
This is a great devotional book, and I am not usually one that finds devotionals set up like this very interesting. It is set up to have a reading each day during Advent, Christmas and through to Epiphany, and the readings are all written by people like C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Kathleen Norris, Annie Dillard, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, etc. This is no, "What was the innkeeper thinking" sort of advent reading book.It is thoughtful and insightful and has a lot to say that ties into the preparative nature of advent, that is the preparation for the messiah's return. The writings vary in length and type from scholarly writings to musings to poetry or introspection. The readings are meaty enough, too, that you could certainly read them this year and again next year and they'll still be good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than Advent and Christmas reading.
I really shouldn't write a review yet, because I haven't finished the book. I'm doing so in hopes that people will buy the book in time to use it this year. This is an excellent book of essays, a few poems, and some sermons. There are some very "heavy hitters" in the mix--check out the table of contents. I have only read through December 2 so far, but it has been a very rewarding journey just a few steps down the path. I particularly love the piece by Karl Rahner (1904-1984), a German Jesuit and theologian. It is very cutting edge theology for its time and even for today, and it reads beautifully and powerfully. Henri Nouwen is also excellent, along with Sylvia Plath's poem.
