5-0 out of 5 stars We keep going back to this book
At different points in our relationship we pull this book off the shelf and read it together out loud. When we first started reading the book we were just dating and it was an example of a relationship we wanted to have. Throughout our marriage it has been an inspiration and a challenge to us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Haunting, Exquisite
This extraordinary memoir by Sheldon Vanauken about his relationship with Jean Davis is subtly addictive and exquisitely crafted. The story of their conversion from a self-described "paganism" to Anglican Christianity (due in no small part to the friendship and mentorship of C. S. Lewis) is gripping and heartbreaking.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken
This book is outstanding! The authors' writing style is engaging and the story is poignant.Mr Vanauken takes us through a relationships' stages with grace and we follow his miraculous journey into the faith and into love and grief-so intricately intertwined! I would recommend this to anyone who is married or thinking of marriage or in a relationship that is thinking of marriage. But also, it is a statement on the path to faith in God for everyone-a good read for intellectuals. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic in the field
Moody is critical enough about what is going on that he makes a good investigator into the NDE phenomenon. There are too many flakes in the field and too many people aiming to crown themselves as spiritual gurus via their claim of having revelations during an NDE. Moody quite simply surveys people who have this experience and notes their similarities and differences. Then, he tries to put it into perspective - how might it be explained physically, psychologically, spiritually? What other phenomenon produce experiences that overlap with some of the ones reported in NDEs (e.g. high-gravity simulators)?
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is perfect for those who are just starting to read about Near Death Experiences. While I was reading this book, I kept thinking of how amazing it must have been when this was first published...because at the time, there had not been anything written like this!Once you read "Life After Life", you need to read "Lessons From The Light" by Kenneth Ring...because Kenneth Ring goes in to much greater detail about the actual near death experiences people had, and also goes in depth about how it forever changed their lives once they returned."Lessons From The Light" made a huge impression on me! Both books are A+++++

3-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth look into death and dying...
I find the book somewhat interesting...

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE CHANGING
I read this book and am now going key by key. This book has helped give me have a different outlook on life. You are changing the way you live. This is not a "do it quick" book; it shows you how to change your life for the better. You need to do it on your own schedule.
4-0 out of 5 stars I love books!
I enjoy reading Joyce's books because I like how down to earth she is and she just hits home for me. I got a little bored with this book I suppose because there is a lot of practical advice and commonsense advice. A lot of the things I have read in numerous other books on health and my walk with God so maybe that is why it was repitious to me. There are a lot of good key points and it is a good book to reference to and take to heart and try to follow. There are some good things to copy and print and try to keep a journal and follow each day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the Best "Healthy Living" Book
I bought this book not quite sure what I was getting, but the concept sounded good.I began the book on a Friday and finished it by Sunday night.I am a Christian so I agree wholeheartedly about Key 1 - Letting God do the Heavy Lifting. Our willpower is our best friend when things are going well, but our downfall when things aren't so peachy. Willpower then takes its leave and in comes reason and believe me, I can reason my way into or out of anything!I'm too tired, I don't want to go to the store, it is just one bite, it won't hurt anything, I don't want to get up early, I don't want to walk - I'm in a hurry, etc. Reason will always let you down. The bible says we are led by God's Spirit, not our own willpower."Not by might, not by power (or willpower), but by My Spirit says the Lord of hosts".Willpower isn't a bad thing, but instead of relying on it, Joyce teaches us to rely on His Spirit instead.Call on God and ask Him for His strength, His peace, His Joy!

5-0 out of 5 stars What Are You Thinking This New Day?
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "A man is what he thinks about all day long..." We are...we really, really are. But the sad fact of the matter is, most of us do not really know what we are thinking. In fact, I would say that most of us aren't really thinking at all. Most of us are just operating on unconscious reactions to things.

Few people can write about faith, parenting, and relationships as can the talented, irreverent Anne Lamott. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Anti-Coulter--Thank GOD!
If you're a Christian person with left of center politics who has had it with insulting, sweeping generalizations, rigid certainty, smarminess, smug lectures, the intellectual dishonesty, and the "Liberal Anything=Big Bad Atheist" attitude of Ann Coulter and others who believe the Righteous Few (although not their clothing), will make the Afterlife look like a naked prayer breakfast at Bob Jones University, there is help at hand. Read Ann Lamott's _Plan B_ for some much needed relief.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pass the sour grapes, please
There is not enough cheese and crackers in this world to go along with the "whine" that Ms. Lamott serves up in Plan B.I have loved her previous works and based on their merit, I pushed on into this book, beginning each new chapter with hope and ending in dissappointment until I finally had to toss it into the garbage. It was tedious, from menopausal maladies to blaming George Bush for all the problems in her life. And God Himself, or "Herself", as Ms. Lamott would say, seems to be a reflection of who SHE is and not the other way around.Yes, God loves us just the way we are but He also loves us too much to leave us that way...except in her case apparently.I wanted to like it and I am sorry to say that it fell way below my expectations.Bummer.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Laughter Is Carbonated Holiness"
If you have warm feelings of sweetness when you witness what Christianity in our country has become, you will not like this book.If you feel hopeful, like a child whose birthday is just a day or so away because you see our country returning to good old Christian values and making right--at long last right--the mistake of separating church and state, you will not like this book.If your heart quickens with thrill to have a born-again national administration and you bask in the quiet joy of the prospect of having our country returned to a Christianity of a glory not seen since days of Cromwell, you will not like this book. If, by your actions, you daily demonstrate that your object of worship is the Bible, you will not like this book.If yours is the Christianity of Revelations; of God's power, might, and unwavering, righteous judgment--you will not like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ BOOK
I bought & read this book & totally loved it. It really has you wanting to be closer to God. Tommy Tenney is an amazing author & spiritual man.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Chasers group teaching
This is a terrific book to teach believers how to pursue the Lord and what it takes to reach each level the Lord wants us to attain. We will be under construction, by the Master Builder, all the way to the gate, but the Lord is never stagnant and has created us to fellowship with Him, we can be more than we think...we must believe Him!!Our group is studying this book, one chapter at a time, over a 10 session time frame. I appreciate Tommy Tenney's continual pointing back to the Word, because that's number one in our pursuit of the Lord's face. Our group's theme is to seek, see, and touch the face of God and to not be satisfied with anything less.
5-0 out of 5 stars Be a God Chaser yourself!
This must be the 4th time I'm reading this book, and just last week, I sensed God asking me to pick it up and read it again.I have found that it is still as relevant as when I read it the first time.In a world where men are looking for better methods, God is looking for better men... men after His own heart! This book helps me put things in perspective about life and ministry... that it is God who ultimately does it and all glory goes to Him.We can do much, we can labor, we can work, we can sweat, we can toil, but when God shows up... He can make all that we are trying to do in our own strength done in His presence.

1-0 out of 5 stars little book, even less to say
I appreciate a simple message, simple & succinctly stated. But this "book" is a waste of even the short time it takes to read it, especially if you have already read Wild at Heart. Eldredge continues, but does not advance one iota, a central theme he stated in WAH: there is a great battle between good & evil, between God & Satan, a battle which started with Eden's fall, and we all play our part in it. I probably should have issued a spoiler alert, b/c I have now just told you everything that Eldredge has to say in Epic. Oh, you can enjoy his constant movie references, if you like, but even they are re-hashed: we get it, John, you like Braveheart and Gladiator and similar movies. But there is virtually no substance here, at least no substance that is not covered in WAH. I wish I could recommend this book more highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than Wild at Heart
Better, much better, than Wild at Heart, this short book draws on ancient and modern mythology, including lots of Lewis and Tolkien to illustrate the motifs of the drama of redemption. Heavy emphasis on free will, but otherwise excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even by His enemies!
John Eldredge does a dynamic job of bringing to light something that so many people miss.So many separate our God and His ways so far out of the secular culture, failing to recognize the symbolic significance of even the most pagan practices and festivals.Knowingly or unknowingly they all point to the True Light of the world...to the truth that is far above men's ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightened?
The ability to heal even though a person has been wounded is an extraordinary message. Hence the appropriate title for this book. The author proposes that the spiritual counselor relate to their directee from their own personal experiences. He suggests that it is through reaching within oneself that those in this kind of service can truly be of help. Nouwen validates the experiences of many in this or allied professions; that we uncover our own pain and weaknesses as we attempt to guide others. This affirmation is valuable. In healing others, the counselor is healed. In being able to recognize and share our own pain, we can better serve.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Academic
I'm reading this book with a group of friends, and we all were surprised at how "academic" this book is written. By "academic" I mean, this book seems to be written during Nouwen's days when he was still at Yale University. The wording and word choice of the sentences are much more collegiate than his later works, which he wrote after going to L'Arche in Toronto. The book is still great and speaks powerfully to things of the Spirit, but it is just a little bit more difficult to understand than say, a John Eldredge book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Contrarian
I have hated this book ever since I first read it. It is incredibly light in any kind of real thought; it provides no original insights. It is practically barren of any Scriptural references. I frankly am astounded that any Christian finds anything to like about this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study!
My Boyfriend and I are almost through this study, and we have learned a lot about God, and about each other through it. It is great doing something like this together and being able to keep each other accountable. I recommend this to any dating couple who wants to grow closer to God and to each other!

5-0 out of 5 stars What we expected
While some complain about the lack of depth in conversation questions, I would call it an opportunity for free discussion.Because the questions are rather general, one feels much more free to allow the conversation to wander from the original topic, providing more insight into the beliefs and backgrounds of your dating partner.
3-0 out of 5 stars A non-threatening primer
My girlfriend and I were trying to find a book that would just help us get in the habit of doing devotions together and praying together, and for the most part, this book did the trick. While some of the topics covered will seem old-hat to people that have been raised Christian or been Christian for years, they sometimes serve as a nice "refresher course" - something every Christian needs now and then.

In a modern society characterized by insensitivity to violence, ambivalence to the suffering of others, and a high-octane profit motive, is talk of ethics anything more than a temporary salve for our collective conscience? The Dalai Lama thinks so. In his Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Said the Buddhist to the hot dog vendor, "Make me one with everything!"
Very few religious leaders speak deeply about ethics in a manner that allows people to think deeply as a result. Too many religious leaders are authoritarian in their edicts about morality or lax because gaining converts and their money is foremost on their minds. (Yeah, I'm a little cynical.)
5-0 out of 5 stars He knows what he's talking about...take notes and learn
The Dalai Lama considers the state of the world in relation to ethics with a fine-toothed comb. (I am currently borrowing "Ethics for the New Millennium" as an abridged audiobook from my local library. This is a tape I will repeatly listen to until its due date...)The Dalai Lama is such a sweetheart! I love how he perceives the world, suggests solutions and alternatives to global and ethical dilemnas, and remains optimistic about the future. He believes that we are a people who want to be happy while avoiding suffering. He acknowleges that we do have a dark side that we must keep in check and subdue; but to counter this dark side, the Dalai Lama believes that people are mostly gentle by nature and can return to that natural state with discipline and guidance. We deviate from our better nature when we try to find happiness the wrong way or in the wrong things, and thereby only feel transitory illusions of happiness that may cause harm to others. As a pop song claims, "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look in the mirror and then make a change...I'm looking at the man in the mirror, I'm asking him to change his ways...etc."The Dalai Lama is definitely in favor of the need for personal growth and an inner revolution for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple and Comprehensive Study on Ethics
There are few books that I've read that have captured my interest so much as to inspire me to read them twice. This is one of those books. It is not a book about Buddhism. It is not a book about religion. Yet I am confident that most people will find the core values of their faith in these pages. "Ethics" is a book about morality. It teaches the reader how we benefit individually from living our lives in an ethical manner as well as how society as a whole benefits. And it describes how society suffers, and we suffer, when our actions are immoral and self-serving.

This is the best commentary, for lack of a better term, on the 23rd Psalm you will find anywhere. This is not a typical commentary in that it discusses this doctrine and that doctrine, providing scripture proofs, presenting arguments, etc.. Rather it is an instruction book about sheep, shepherds, and the work of a shepherd, and when you understand that, the 23rd Psalm comes alive like never before. This will also give more meaning to many of the teachings of Jesus.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Good look at the Good Shepherd
Phillip Keller worked for eight years as a sheep owner and sheep rancher. In addition to that, he served as the lay pastor (shepherd) of a community church, spending time feeding and leading that flock of people for several months. Consequently, Phillip Keller is intimately acquainted through first hand experience with the life of a shepherd. This personal experience in shepherding manifests itself in his tremendous insights into the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. This book definitely gave me an increased understanding of a Shepherd's work. This book gave me an even greater appreciation for my Shepherd and it encouraged me to an even greater faith in God's wisdom and ways. I highly recommend this book.

This was a very enlightening, in depth look at the 23rd Psalm. This would make a very good presentation for an adult or teenage Sunday School class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it ten stars if I could

5-0 out of 5 stars It really does point to the end of reincarnation
"The End of Reincarnation" by Gary Renard delivers what the title promises. Of course you have to do the work to make it happen, the forgiveness work, that is. But this isn't the old fashioned idea of forgiveness. It's more in harmony with the new physics than the old, Newtonian physics, which was based on separation. This new kind of forgiveness is based on oneness and wholeness, like quantum physics. I was very impressed by Renard's wide range of spiritual knowledge, his sense of humor, and his explanations of the modern spiritual guide, "A Course in Miracles." He goes into even more detail in his 7 hour set from Sounds True called, "Secrets of the Immortal," but "The End of Reincarnation" is a great introduction to a real method to break the cycle of birth and death, once and for all. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cards, but I need more information
These cards are the first Angel Cards I have ever owned. They are so beautiful in every way. But....I need more information for understanding the reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Big on Content Low on Appeal
I just received these the other day from Amazon and was a bit dissapointed. My previous deck, Goddess Oracle Cards, are so much more colorful and thin and easy to maneuver. I find these photos more drab and the cards are thicks and clumsy. The fonts are not easy on the eye either. But then again, the accuracy is still there. I just don't reach for these as much.

I had a deck of my own and I wanted to give a deck to my niece who is 11 years old.She is very impressed with it.She lives in a difficult situation and finds the cards very comforting.

Henri Nouwen calls on Christian leaders--including himself-- to resist, as Jesus resisted, the temptations to be relevant, spectacular, and powerful.Instead,
5-0 out of 5 stars Heart Challenge for Leaders
Nouwen uses the temptations of Jesus in the desert to help leaders analyze their motivation and methods in leading others for Christ. This small, easy to read book possesses amazing depth, yet is spiritually challenging for even the most experienced pastor. Nouwen hits the ball out of the park. This classic should be read by all church leaders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little book on Christian leadership.
Nouwen lays out a talk about Christian leadership based upon the three temptation of Jesus from Satan in the desert (Luke 4:3-13). He states that all Christian Leaders are tempted to be: 1) Relevant, 2) Popular or Spectacular, 3) Powerful and that all three of these can be dangerous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transparent Faith
Carol Kent and her husband have opened their heart of hearts and allowed us to look into every parents' nightmare.Their God proved Himself faithful and the Kent's do the same. You will be stretched and transformed by the honest, human, horrible suffering and encouraged by the God in charge of everything.MUST READ!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all believers
Mrs. Kent's story applies to each of in the hard places of life.We all have an "Isaac" - the person or thing closest to our hearts, our future hopes and dreams - that must be layed down.In telling her story, Mrs. Kent illustrates the difficulty of this, yet demonstrates that it can be done. She doesn't gloss over the pain, yet doesn't leave us there, either. She shows us there is hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Christianity!! Sometimes there are periods of Suffering!!!
What an incredible book.I am so thankful for the insight and truthfullness of Carol Kent and sharing her story as a Parent devoted to God, yet her world is shaken when her model 25 yr old military son is arrested and convicted of 1st degree murder. It inspired me and shows Christians are often called to go through times of intense persecution and pain while struggling to hold onto their faith and identify with the suffering of our Savior. It is during those times that the Lord is asking us if we will still hang onto His truths, His faithfullness, and Trust Him, even when you feel like God is absent from the horrific nightmare your living. I get so tired of hearing about the "cushy, prosperity, feel good" Christianity so many Preacher's talk about without honestly admitting and sharing how one can come under the onslaught of attack by the enemy, and in a moment life can be turned upside down. If God didn't spare His own Son from suffering, feelings of being forsaken, and severe trials, all while trusting and hanging onto His Father's Word, we as Christians won't always be spared such things either. The difference is we have Hope, we have Promises, and we have Deliverance just as Jesus did.
