5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration by Date or by Topic
This calendar-style book has much to offer in short, easily adaptable entries for each day of the year. The obvious approach would be to set aside a few minutes to read and reflect on each day's entry. However, the author has generously offered an option via the topic index. Either choice is suitable for individuals or small groups. The format is a selection from Augustine's writings, containing an appropriate heading and the citation, followed by a brief reflection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power Of Love
This book is a testament to Our Lord Jesus Christ and how His love frees people from Satan's grasp.Mr. Shoebat was brought up learning to hate.In this book he stated, 'My lullibies and many of the poems we memorized were about flying body parts and rolling heads'.Sweet.This is the influence of Islam in Arab lands. He now preaches a different gospel. The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
There is a lot of excellent information - quotes from various sources, excerpts from the Koran, etc. - but I had expected a somewhat different book.I thought it would be about his experiences as a terrorist, what the terrorist organization was like from the inside, and his effort to remove himself from it.It really is a book about what Islam really is and then a long part at the end is an interpretation of End Time references in the Bible. There is nothing personal in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read which will help one think Biblically
What an excellent book with many things I had never heard before!Be prepared to rethink many of your assumptions concerning the end times.Gives good reasons to support why I am a Christian Zionist.God has spoken, and His Word is clear. The book ties together Israel's prophets and the book of Revelation. If I had to recommend one book on prophecy, this would be it!As Walid Shoebat says, "To all who seek Israel's destructiion, I say, 'Think Again.'" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Nidra Meditation CD
I have been using Yoga Nidra in my teaching work for years and find this CD to be a very useful addition, informationally and practically as far as the meditation included on the CD is concerned.
5-0 out of 5 stars It really works
Every time I come home from work and feel stress, overwhelming with the everything, I just turned this CD on and started my meditation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers the goods
A friend recommended this CD. I do not know the author, either. I have used it daily for the past month and love it. I like the fact that there is only a voice directing me through the meditation, it helps to focus. If I use it a night, I fall asleep immediately and sleep without interruption until morning (unless my cat wants to be let out early). Alternatively, I use it in the late afternoon to relax from the stress of the day, before beginning evening chores. I am a yoga practitioner and have also felt its benefits in my asana practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Listening
After reading several of Joyce Meyers books. This one was very interesting.I love to work with the hardback, the study guide and my Life Application KJV Bible.I love the way the three connect. Two phrases that caught my interest were, "Ask God to open your ears and sanctify them so you can be sensitive to His voice," and "We must learn to listen, for it is impossible to hear without listening."
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
My favorite chapter is the one on peace. This book is so inspirational that I recommended it in a book I wrote called Where's my mate? One day when I was feeling a little blue, I found this book and when I started reading the fog lifted. Thank you Joyce!
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This book is SO great!I often have heard about people hearing from God, and I never understood what they were talking about. This easy to read, direct and "to the point", and highly informative book taught me everything I needed to know to trust myself in knowing when I am hearing from God.And that knowledge has greatly enhanced my relationship w/Him.I am so grateful to Joyce Meyer for teaching me how to have a friend in God. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars God is calling. Are you listening?
God Calling is a great daily devotional. I have been reading it on a daily basis for five consecutive years and cannot imagine starting my day without it. It was given to me as a gift by me wonderful sister, Mary Lou.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Feast of Blessing and JOY
I've always wondered why many Christians seem so stressed and burdened that all the JOY seems sapped from their lives, like the saving work of Grace was all up to THEM and the effort required just tired all the joy right out of them.Well, this powerful little book reverberates with the truth of Jesus' redemptive works: "Not I, but the Father who dwelleth in Me doeth the work." The desire to know and live in harmony with the Will of God is kindled in the reader and the resultant JOY is restored directly to the believing heart. It doesn't matter what you are going through, whether times of joy or times of trial:"Your faith and MY Power - the only two essentials.Nothing else is needed." (Feb.3 - If Men Oppose).Stop eating spiritual "crumbs" and begin feasting on the spiritual banquet testified to within the pages of this powerful, life-changing book. It will satisfy your soul.

Editorial Review

In undertaking a spiritual life, we must make certain that our path is connected with our heart, according to author and Buddhist monk Jack Kornfield. Since 1974 (long before it gained popularity in the 1990s), Kornfield has been teaching westerners how to integrate Eastern teaching into their daily lives. Through generous storytelling and unmitigated warmth, Kornfield offers this excellent guidebook on living with attentiveness, meditation, and full-tilt compassion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with heart!!!!!
This is an excellent and sensitively written book by a former Buddhist monk and clinical psychologist. Jack Kornfield uses stories and lyrical language to weave a portrait of an authentic spiritual life characterized by insight, compassion and wisdom. He makes Buddhism accessible to modern people and shows us how it is relevant to modern life. This is no small task and Kornfield pulls it off brilliantly, with warmth and an entertaining style. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for deeper meaning in their lives whatever their specific beliefs. It is also an important book that connects Western psychological thought to Eastern worldviews.
5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books I have ever read
I highly recommend this book.It has changed the way I look at life and spirituality.Nearly every line in the book is filled with profound meaning.Additonally, the style is clear and the ideas accessible for anyone who is truly interested in spiritual fulfillment.I am at greater peace with the world since having read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightfully clear, engaging guide for beginning meditators
Jack Kornfield is a humble and humorous guide when it comes to incorporating eastern practices into one's prayer and/or contemplative life. He is down to earth, emminently practical, and tremendously encouraging. A strong advocate of developing a disciplined practice of meditation, Kornfield has a very nice way of communicating this necessity without scaring the novice off. He has a great reserve of wonderful stories and anecdotes which make his suggestions spring to life. I've been a college chaplain for 20 years, reading and recommending books on spirituality for all of those. Kornfield is a exceptionally fine teacher and I consider this book his best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Different methods of meditation
This book an overview of the major different meditation paths and would appeal to those who have a questioning mind - its analysis of the various paths is quite objective. If you are looking for general guidelines and a justification of the positive aspects of meditation this book is definitely worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Overview of Meditation Practices
In THE MEDITATIVE MIND: THE VARIETIES OF MEDITATIVE EXPERIENCE Daniel Goleman does an even more comprehensive job of covering his subject matter than William James did in his classic study of relgion,THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. Goleman covers a wider range of experiences and -- given that psychology has come a long way since James'day -- provides a more detailed analysis. This book ranks with Aldous Huxley's THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY as a modern classic on spiritual paths. He makes a good case for meditation as an ancient "psychotechnology" (my words, not his) for the transformation of consciousness. He cuts through the superficial differences in meditative practices, and points out what all of them shareat the core: the retraining of attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete path
I found this book 5 years ago and have really not found another book which is better at describing complete path with such clarity, and richness.I think this book is extremely helpful for all meditators who are interested in seeing where they are on the path. For without a map, it is extremely easy for any meditator to become lost and not make any real progress. This book in my opinion can also be used to assess the presence of authentic teachers, someone who has traversed at least 4 levels of absorption, have seen validity attachment in cause of suffering, have begun purification of their bodies as well as their minds, and have experienced true emptiness and not fallen into attachment afterwards. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts to live by
This is a gritty, reality-checking book, the kind you can open to any page and find there a reading to guide your day's contemplation. Richard Rohr combines his Roman Catholicism (RC) with Buddhist sensibilities in this great set of readings for those with meditation and/or comtemplation practices. Though not RC myself, I am opening this book several times a week and I am recommending it to friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
Recently I was asked to recommend some books for a burgeoning scholar of early Christianity and this was the first book I chose. It offers a very good introduction to the history of Western Christianity, treating most subjects well despite limited space.Still this book is not meant to be comprehensive, but instead to provide the basics of the Christian story in the West, and it does a fine job of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating history book
This book reads very easily through the history of the early church, in a balanced perspective on the changes in the church.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential and fascinating
This is a very readable and detailed history (in two volumes) of the Christian religion from the time of the Apostles until 1984, when the book was published. I read this book out of general interest, although I understand that it is widely used for college courses on church history and doctrine. The history of the church is a huge topic, and Gonzalez has a real talent for summarizing complex developments and making them very accessible for a general reader. No special background in theology or history is required to appreciate this wonderful account. Gonzalez is apparently Protestant, but he gives a fair and balanced account of all denominations, including Catholic and Orthodox. He also includes mysticism and the radical sects. He is aware of the current scholarship, but he doesn't get bogged down in the numerous scholarly controversies of historians. He doesn't succumb to revisionism and p.c.; he's not afraid to call a spade a spade. But if there is genuine ambiguity and grounds for debate, he does mention that. The two volumes of this book also work well as a concise history of western civilization from year one until 1984. Gonzalez is able to identify the most important events and issues and describe them clearly and concisely. The major theological movements are described very briefly. This is not primarily a history of doctrine, but rather a history of the various Christian churches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Peace and Quiet
Don't place much trust in the one-star reviews of this book unless you have come to believe that peace and quiet is satanic.Keating lays out a method of meditation which is not meant to become your sole "stairway to Heaven" but is meant to be practiced in addition to reading the Bible, going to Sunday Mass, and practicing corporal works of charity. The practice is Christian and assumes that the Grace of God works on the believer who waits in humble silence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing book, a faith-changing book
This is quite simply the most helpful Christian book I have ever read. Thomas Keating's genuine humility and spiritual wisdom, combined with his excellent skill as a writer, cut through all the myth and miss-information about the almost-forgotten gift of contemplative prayer. In a World (and Church) in which one is constantly bombarded by a thousand voices, opinions, and calls upon one's time and faculties, the method of centering prayer outlind by Fr. Keating is a blessed relief. If you feel as if God's voice and presence have been sucked out of the World, your World, then this is the book for you! Learning this very simple method of prayer, in which one allows all the stressfull feelings and thoughts of life to fall away in order to receive God's gentle, continual renewal, has changed my life and faith forever! But more than that, I found again in this book an idea of God I have carried in my heart for years, but which my experience in the contemporary church had all but extinguished. I found reasurance that the God I hoped for, the God who already accepts me as I am because of Christ and gently leads me forward, is real. Praise God!

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is good but the CD is excellent!
I purchased both the book and the CD.I will probably recommend the CD to many of my clients who want to work on deepening their spiritual lives and change the negative emotionalreactions associated with events of daily living.I have been practicing centered prayer for about a half an hour per day for about three months now. From a psychological perspective the best way that I can describe the experience is from the gestalt notion that content has meaning within a particular context.By modifying the context it is possible to change the emotional charge associated with a given event.Centered prayer definitely works at that level. The more you practice it the less emotionally charged daily events become. It becomes easier to let things go by.I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but I really enjoyed the CD.It was more focused and made it easier to experience centered prayer as taught by Father Keating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bread cast upon the waters
I was given "Bread For The Journey" at a particularly low point in my life and will personally attest to its restorative power. Henri Nouwen was the rare soul who wrote from a soul molded by the living heart of scripture and informed by compassionate hands-on caregiving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Meal
If are bodies are not fed we will die. In the same manner, if the spirituality of our being is not fed, it too will wither and fade. This book offers food for our spiritual journey in a way that makes one look forward to the meal and after partaking makes one fulfilled by the experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily Bread
A book of daily meditations needs to give you something to think about, chew on, and ponder, throughout the rest of your day.Nouwen does this. His meditations are brief, and to the point. They cover many aspects of our daily journey to become more fully the children of God, emotional and physical, as well as spiritual. He invites you to think about who Jesus really said was your neighbor, for example. I began in June, and have not yet gone through the whole year, but I already know it is a book I will be able to use for years to come. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In the era of self-empowerment and the relentless glorification of self-esteem, Mark Epstein is questioning whether we have it all backward. As a psychiatrist and practicing Buddhist for 25 years, Epstein has come to believe that the self-help movement has encouraged us to spend enormous amounts of time, money, and mental energy on patching up our egos, rather than pursuing true self-awareness. Instead, Epstein suggests we carefully shatter the ego, as if it were a fat piggy bank, to see what's inside--a scary prospect for those who spend their lives in fear of falling apart. But fear not. Epstein artfully shows readers how to patch the pieces together again into a far richer and more meaningful mosaic. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What was that? Did "I" just read something?
Mark Epstein is much smarter than me, better educated, and knows a lot more than me about Buddhism and psychology.
4-0 out of 5 stars Aloneness and death
Here's the quick summary of this book: there are issues, like existential aloneness and death as the end of consciousness that most of us like to dress up in opposition to their Ultimate Truth. We prefer to believe, for example, that we aren't alone, after all, there are all of those people at work that report to us that naturally think we are messianic. As for death, well, probably it's a Big Picnic and Elvis, JFK, and our favorite comedian will be there (see Echo Bodine's books for details). These are issues, which if confronted honestly, aren't going away with 100 mg of Zoloft or a nice walk in the park.Nor are they classic phobias in which putting a bottle of spiders on your bed stand for a week willfreak you out so badly via the somewhat euphemistically entitledtechnique of "flooding" that soon you willthink of spiders as your Little Helpers, catching and eating all those nasty flies that are in your house. Epstein has a different answer: meditate and get right into the issues; they aren't going anywhere and you can't resolve them by doodling in the external world.Stand right in the middle of the fire of the fear of death and the depression upon the conclusion that you are ultimately alone; meditate on the issues and pursue them by looking within...and therein is the only chance of peaceful acceptance, which Epstein asserts is lots better than denial.I would have given the book five stars, but I took one star off for the author's picture on the back of the book. The photographer was apparently fond of the "look at me pull my own finger" look for his subjects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taking the sting out of emptiness
Having spent years suffering high levels of emotional pain, Buddhism was naturally a possible solution. But the typical Western summary of its path as `giving up desire' put me off: to give up desire struck me as to give up being human. A couple of years ago, I bought at a country newsagent Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart: A Buddhist Perspective on Wholeness by psychiatrist Mark Epstein. The book is simply about buddhism-as-psychology - as far as I can see, what it has to say is compatible with any religious tradition. I read it, and then re-read it. Thinking about what it had to say changed my perspective and effectively banished my pain. I was suffering an emptiness that I did not see as emptiness but as lack - in my case, a lack of intimate love and the deeper fear that lack was just. This book enabled me to see what I was suffering was emptiness, to embrace that emptiness and to have it no longer cause me pain. I came to feel whole; I feel more human not less.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-buy!
I've only read the first 49 so far (about 1/7th the total) and I'm blown away. My original thought was to read one at a time, reflect on it and then move on. I do that but all are so good I keep reading. The format makes it easy to read a little here and there and each page is both accessible and profound. Just buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balance
This is the best daily source of balance I have found. It is a ready dip into sanity and a constant reminder that there is a still point to which one might repair from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for All Times
I received this book as a gift from the author and had never read a Ron Mehl book before.I could not put this book down.It is easy to read and easy to understand. The examples provided are insightful and thought provoking.Whenever friends of mine are experiencing rough times I give them this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Learning from King David's ordinary life.
I read this book and it really touched my heart. This is the kind of book you have no doubt that the author is Holy Spirit himself. Actually, Ron Mehl is one of the best evangelical writer I ever read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sectarian "Cure," Sidelined "Psalm"
The Psalms are treasured in three world religions embracing millions of people all over the globe. For this reason, it's helpful to be alerted when a book purportedly about a Psalm pushes a limited, sectarian point of view.Read more
