5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME & POWERFUL "watching your soul-USInG THE SWORD of the SPIRIT"
The Scriptures tell us to keep watch over our souls, but most of us women are so used to caretaking for others, even in our prayers that we forget to even pray over ourselves! (to pray HIS WORD daily for others check out "ALPHABET PRAYERS the Power of Praying Scripture into the Hearts You Love").
5-0 out of 5 stars Praying God's Word
This is an excellent source for a prayer group. Our church has been using it and we are learning alot from the way it was written. It is a wonderful book and I would recomment it to a group or a single reader. CB

5-0 out of 5 stars Praying God's Word:Breaking Free from Spiritual Strongholds
This book may become a Christian classic. The subject matter is drawn from two of Beth Moore's Bible studies, Breaking Free and Living Free, which would be advantageous but not necessary to complete before beginning Praying God's Word.

Next to the Book of Common Prayer, I refer to this prayer book most.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
The Puritans were amazing men of God.Their reverance for God and their humble hearts are convicting and encouraging. The church today desperately needs more men and women like them. This book of prayers and devotions would be a great source of nourishment for the soul of any Christian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the heart
These prayers, poems, and devotions are a great starting pointto get your heart ready to talk to Yahweh, our God.The truth and wisdom that the puritans speak through these words really opens my heart to intimacy with Him.You will enjoy reading them over and over again. There are so many that you can use this book as a kick off in your devotional time.I highly recommend this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, spiritual, and inspirational
With a thorough understanding of the spirit of religion, and a strong background in Christian, spiritual, and other historical sources, Duncan proceeds to disassemble the modern fundamentalist movement.
3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven but sometimes interesting articles on various subjects
The author, David James Duncan, has written a book that is one of my favorite books. (The River Why - see my review)He has also written other books that are not so good, in my opinion. But in all of his books, once in a while, I come across writing that is so gripping and so fundamentally good that I have come to revere this author, as I revere few others. This book is one of those books that are a mixed bag.Certain parts left me offended, certain parts were vague, certain parts were wrong, and a fair number of parts blew me away. Thus, 3 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe The Best Book I Have Read, Seriously
God Laughs & Plays by David James Duncan is one of the most extraordinary books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. And I was an English Literature major in college and graduate school, which means I have read a lot of books.A friend recommended this book to me.She said it was something very special.I bought a copy and read it.After I finished it, I read it again.

I first stumbled across this book in the local Barnes & Noble, where I sat and perused it, becoming more and more drawn to the liturgies and readings. When I arrived home, I immediately logged on to Amazon.com and put it on my Wish List. One of my friends gave it to me the following Christmas.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book I wanted to like but . . .
I am generally a fan of Coleman Barks work; this book, however, was a disappointment. The jacket cover says of Michael Green "is working to create a new kind of sacred art for our time."This is an accurate description - he is still "working" with some successes and some failures. The net result is that pursuing the volume's art, one is encouraged to explore further.5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime !

I've only read the first 49 so far (about 1/7th the total) and I'm blown away. My original thought was to read one at a time, reflect on it and then move on. I do that but all are so good I keep reading. The format makes it easy to read a little here and there and each page is both accessible and profound. Just buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words of Comfort
I found this small book very powerful and helpful. There were quotes and small essays for all types of transitions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful thoughts and words when I needed comfort.
I had bought this book early in the year (2005) but had somehow put it aside and forgotten about it. Three weeks after the death of my husband in December, the book "appeared" to me again and it was such a comfort to me. I am now reading it for the third time. It has been one of my best tools for dealing with my grief. Thank you Julia for such beautiful thoughts. Thank you God, for such a talented writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Declarations for a Changing World
There are some books that are so good, you almost want to keep their existence a secret-somewhat like finding a hidden treasure in a field, a needle in a haystack or a pearl of great price at a rummage sale.Julia Cameron's Transitions strikes me as one of those books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation
If you read "The Four Agreements", you will enjoy this book. It's a good one to sit down with at any time you need some quiet time for meditation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little book of Peace
I really recommend any book written by this great man. This book truly gets to the essence of what praying is all about. I was touched by these prayers, reading them was like a peaceful meditation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better than the Four Agreements!
"Prayers" is even a better book than the Four Agreements, though the Four Agreements build you a foundation. It is meant to be a book we will read when at the quest of love and peace. The book is meant to be read when you are angry, sad, experiencing fear and judgment.Of course you still need to find other ways to work on your anger, this book simply have the power to help you let go of those nasty thoughts. This book is not meant to be used to suppress/deny the existence of anger and fear, for, we need to accept human has all ranges of emotions. There is no right and wrong for whatever and however we feel things. At the end of the day, we are just saying prayers to let go of the emotional poisons. That is the essence of this book. The words of the book can only be experienced and felt. You cannot use your judgmental mind to think and to understand nor can you try to rush finishing the book. Some books, for example this one, just are not meant for speed reading because you cannot experience the peace the author wants to give you. When you open your heart and feel the power of the words, you experience lots of love and compassion to yourself and others. That is how you want to use this book to open your spiritual eyes and stay there. This book is easy to understand. It is meant to be read again and again, especially during turbulent times where we are most easily to slip back to the judgmental self.I definitely recommend this book to someone who is experiencing some sort of a significant loss in life (whether it is a loved one's death, a lost of job or a loss of marriage).May we all come out from the turbulent times and experience love and care, which help us return to our authentic self - with love and care and without judgment about self and others? ... This is a dear, concise, wise little book.It sits on our dining table. My husband and I take turns saying grace each evening, opening randomly and reading. It has prayers from many different spiritual sources and we find it refreshing and meaningful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works If You Eat Alone
After realizing how rote saying grace had become for me, especially since I eat most of my meals alone, the glorious graces in this book helped me center and use this sacred time to make a heartfelt connection. Also, Ibegan to praise things I'd never considered before (like the sacrificesmade by individuals, animals, plants, etc.) that went into the making ofthe meal.It is an absolutely awesome collection of elegant blessings.

Excellent but a newer version is available under James Socias as Editor.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book But Needs Updating!
This is a great prayerbook for Catholics and has all the essential prayers except for the Luminous Mysteries and hence this portion of it needs to be updated. The version I have has bonded leather covers and gold imprinted letters. The pages are also gilded and the fonts are also of a nice size for easy reading.I find the section on "How to be a Better Catholic" to be very useful as well as Latin versions of some of the prayers on the facing pages to the English versions.Highly recommended but they should update and include the Luminous Mysteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have

Editorial Review

Those who seek a connection with God, but who do not want to confine themselves to praying in churches with bowed heads or meditating for hours, will feel liberated by this new style of prayer book. The main point that Redmont wants readers to grasp is that prayer--the act of communing with God--should not be hindered by rules. Prayer can take place while playing a piano, planting a garden, or solving a complicated math problem. Read more

Hurray! My home library is full of books on spiritual practice, all read and mostly gathering dust. All that advice to "go off and be quiet" just does not speak to my extraverted and very public self. Jane Redmont's book is the first I've seen that embraces the wildly variedpersonalities of those who dare to pray. She not only acknowledges thevariety, but invites the reader into new spaces where God may be found. I've bought and given away half a dozen copies of this book, and I'mwaiting for the paperback version so I can afford to pass more around! What a treasure. It doesn't sit on my shelf. It gets USED. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A strong tradition...
For many Episcopalians (the American version of official Anglicans), the 1928 version of the Book of Common Prayer is still the most prized worship and liturgical form around. When the 'new' Book of Common Prayer was adopted in 1979 (merely the latest in a lengthening line of Prayer Book revision done by the church in America in the past three hundred years), whole parishes balked (and walked) because of the changes; faithful within the church looked for various means of preserving their beloved version of the BCP - my own church had a '1928 Service' every Wednesday afternoon.4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Edition of the 1928 BCP
This is a nice edition of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.I decided to buy this copy when I realized that the personal edition with imitation leather cover that I bought many years ago really was not suitable for study purposes.(I prefer hardcover books.)This is a "pew edition".The size of the book is good for general reading, and the binding seems sturdy. The burgundy cloth cover gives the book a rich appearance. However, in place of the usual certification, there is only a disclaimer stating that this edition was photoreproduced from a certified book; hence the type is not very crisp, and the pages have a "photocopied" look to them. But that's okay.I really like this book.5-0 out of 5 stars This is the 1928 edition
For all who are interested, this is a copy of the 1928 Episcopal prayerbook. While I don't want to become a part of the prayer book debate here, many prefer it to the 1979 edition. The 1928 edition's language is moretraditional. The attitude is more penitential, and I believe some churchholidays are given more pages (though the list of holidays only has themajor feasts).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Readable Book on Prayer
Sometimes when I purchase a book on methods of prayer, I wonder if I should be reading about prayer or should I just get down to the act of praying itself. I can say to myself "well, I need to read these books for professional reasons" but more often thannot, I read them for myself, and when I read books such as Michael Casey's TOWARD GOD, I find new insights about prayer that help me in the discipline of prayer and hopefully, draw me closer to God.
4-0 out of 5 stars A book on prayer worth rereading.....
Michael Casey has writeen several books on the practice of spiritual disciplines and spirituality. All are worthwhaile, but this is perhaps his best. It is certainly the starting place for beginning to read his work. As a protestant / neo-pentecostal / evangelical, I found that I was drawn to his way of emphasizing that prayer is a relationship, not an activity or duty per se. This perspective helps me understand the fundamnetals of prayer, and this is what this book is about. Although I have read many books on prayer, from Catherine Marshall to Jack Hayford, from Pope John Paul to the classics, few are more helpful than this book. I find myself rereading certain passages over and over. The only book I have read recently that has had the same impact might be Nouwen's "The Only Necessary Thing." These two books are made out of the same cloth.

5-0 out of 5 stars One book to definitely read on prayer
Michael Casey, an Australian Trappist monk, has written a wonderful primer on prayer in clear language.TOWARD GOD is an enlightening reflection based on personal experience, touching all the major aspects of the subject of prayer from the Western Christian tradition.I have read many books on prayer, including the great classics, but this is the one I have read over and over. ... Great food for thought that stays with you! This devotional will be one that I'll continue to use through the coming years. Also a great gift idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Does NotGive Us Sickness
The main message of this book is powerful because it is based on sacred Scripture. God does not give us sickness. He wants us to find a path to healing. The author gives us a prescription to follow which will increase our faith in Jesus Christ as well as in God's healing promises. ... Read more
