4-0 out of 5 stars Check It Out
The Faith Club arose out of the rubble of 9-11, as three young mothers living in New York City - a Muslim, a Christian, and a Jew - agreed to meet together to discuss their differing faiths and how they might learn to live together in peace.
4-0 out of 5 stars a beautiful read
I think in it's own little way this book does what it can to spread some hope and optimism about Jewish, Christian, and Muslim people living together in harmony.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Self-Help/Success Book for Christian Women
The Confident Woman is a great book for Christian women who feel a calling to do more in their lives (regardless of their age). Joyce leads you through claiming your confidence, becoming bold without being overbearing, and overcoming fear in order to succeed in life.In the beginning of the book she covers Adam vs. Eve issues and weaves the message that men and women are and should be partners not enemies.Keep your bible with you for this book as you may want to cross reference, although most biblical passages are included in The Confident Woman, some are only mentioned to be referenced.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book encouraging its target audience to have a positive, "can-do" attitude
In "The Confident Woman: Start Today Living Boldly and Without Fear," the writer Joyce Meyer encourages women to start thinking positively and more confidently about their abilities. She provides a set of seven guidelines that are designed to help them accomplish just that. There are also passages in the book showing that any woman can be an independent, fearless leader and she wastes no time in proving to them that even God has their support, as indicated by the inclusion of several Biblical passages, in which they learn how God feels about them. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Humor is truly God-given
And there's plenty of it to be found in Higg's work. This book is truly unique in several ways, one being that it's practically an anthology as well as a guidebook. Also, Higgs blessedly does NOT paint unrealistically good-girl pictures of what we should be like; her brutally honest recounting of her past is part of this. I found her transformation of old stories into new absolutely brilliant and insightful and her humor and bluntness often hilarious. Inspite of her occasional gushing of Christ (can you blame her?) and her extremely affectionate terms of endearment for the reader, Higgs never came across to me as condescending or fake. In fact, she's more real than certain people I've actually met. Some female Christian authors give the impression of being either the dance-through-daisies type or the whip-in-hand type that you can't at all relate to, but Higgs is wonderfully flesh and blood as well as Godly, which not everyone can accomplish! One feminist claimed that Higgs believes in women being submissive to men, but let's give her a little more credit here! While she does make a comment about wives submitting to their husbands, she only does this once and never says that women should be submissive in general. If there's one thing Higgs is not, it's a doormat. I did take away one star because I felt like she occasionally (in both her Bad Girl books) connected personal beliefs with Christian ones a little too much(I do not agree that nudity is inherently sinful or that morning-after pills are nasty), but we all do that to a certain point and Higgs still for the most part manages to steer clear of preachiness. If you'd like a down-to-earth and entertaining Christian guide, I highly recommend both "Bad Girl" books as well as "Mad Mary" (read the latter with a bunch of tissues, though). Higgs is truly in a class by herself :) God Bless you, Liz!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most relevant book I've ever read
I bought this book more than a year before I read it. It sat on my shelf gathering dust until I finally found the courage to actually read it. Once I started, I couldn't stop. I read it for two days straight, grabbing it every chance I could.
5-0 out of 5 stars Witty, fun, real and relevant
We have a small group of women meeting once a week and reading this book. I love the way Liz starts each chapter by retelling the story of the woman the way it may look if it was happening today and gives us a new insight into that life. She then goes step by step through the Bible verses and does a study on them - showing insights and ways that it relates to us today. The questions at the end of the chapter are good as well and the whole diverse group of us is learning... There are different types of women in the Bible and each of us relates to at least one of them! I like the catagories: Bad to the bone, Bad for a season and Bad for a moment. Witty, fun, real and relevant to me today. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Karen Armstrong speaks to the troubling years following her decision to leave the life of a Roman Catholic nun and join the secular world in 1969. What makes this memoir especially fascinating is that Armstrong already wrote about this era once---only it was a disastrous book. It was too soon for her to understand how these dark, struggling years influenced her spiritual development, and she was too immature to protect herself from being be bullied by the publishing world. As a result, she agreed to portray herself only in as "positive and lively a light as possible"---a mandate that gave her permission to deny the truth of her pain and falsify her inner experience. The inspiration for this new approach comes from T. S. Eliot's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Touching and Powerful
Thank you Karen for recording your experience in such a truthful and therefore powerful way. Your courage and determination in the face of inhumanity is a familiar drumbeat that we would all do well to march to. Your stories of survival with compassion and mercy are a shining-light to those of all faiths and of all languages. Your language of love and hope is universal and you are a true friend. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Karen Armstrong is a great writer, with quite the story to tell. The Spiral Staircase recounts the most powerful and change-filled years of her life--it concentrates mostly on the few years following her departure from life as a Catholic nun.She tells her story so honestly and openly that you really get a feel for Karent Armstrong the person, not just the successful writer.I read The Spiral Staircase before I read any of her other works, but since then I've enjoyed both her biography of Buddha, and "Islam: A Short History."Her memoir is candid and her prose is neither too emotional nor too academic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Describes temporal lobe epilepsy with Grace
Another reviewer, a nurse who has interest in temporal lobe epilepsy and thought that Armstrong did not adequately explain temporal lobe epilepsy, has obviously never experienced a temporal lobe seizure. Karen Armstrong's descriptions of her temporal lobe seizures were spine-tingling, and nearly brought me to tears with the feeling that "Finally! Someone has put it into words! Someone understands!" Her plight out of the darkness of religious life is inspiring and her experiences with epilepsy make a remarkable backdrop. I recommend this read for people who have never questioned their faith as well as those who have. I also recommend it for families and friends of people with epilepsy. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This one-year devotional program offers contemporary Christian women a chance to study the lives and legacies of 52 women in Scripture. Some, such as Eve or "Lot's wife," are prominent and well-known biblical figures. Even the lesser-known women--such as the daughter-in-law of Judah, Tamar, who disguised herself as a prostitute--offer provocative and fascinating stories. What shines through in this well-written book is the authors' great respect for these gritty, intelligent, and occasionally flawed women. The authors briefly tell each woman's life story in an enchanting storytelling voice, helping readers to see how these ancient stories still have meaning centuries later. The book is well-organized, offering a woman's story for every week of the year, as well as a week's worth of structured lessons and reflections. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of Inspiration
I ordered Women of the Bible because I've heard so many wonderful things about this book over the years. I ordered one for my mom and me.We both are getting so much out of it and growing in our walk with the Lord. The book focuses on the women who made such a difference in there lives leaning on the Lord.It was also a great book on just being able to relate to someone from the Bible who is a woman. The parts that have impacted me have been on women who were struggling with fertility. It was nice to know that they were dealing with this issue even back then. This is a must read for anyone wanting to grow and learn more about the Bible.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Good for Group Study
I am currently leading a Bible study group using this book and I agree with the reviewer who stated that the questions do not lead to much discussion. The questions are kind of odd, like When in your life have you succumbed to _______?Then all the ladies just sit and look uncomfortable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is the most unique study book I have ever read in my entire life. I love this!! It tells you where to find the story---gives you a written story---asks you questions---suggest neat ideas and gives you prayer ideas. It even gives you the history of what it was like in their time! This book is so unlike the other study books I've read. I have a lot of trouble following a lot of study books b/c its just information, although interesting, it's hard to keep my attention. The way this book is written really kept me going--I absolutely fell in love with this book. I didn't follow the everyday planning although that is an option (it puts the days of the week at the top) I usually did one week in one night since each day was so short. But the short was great for when I was in a hurry for something. I loved this book, its fantastic and absolutely worth more than every penny spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Women's Lives, Women's Legacies - a radiant guidebook
I'm a woman who's been blessed with a long and varied life. I've always wanted to share my experiences with my nieces, and to offer them my hard-earned wisdom so that they might move into womanhood a little better informed than I was. I've also had an inner desire to be seen and valued by them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Women's Lives, Women's Legacies - Bravo
Women's Lives, Women's Legacies is a powerful tool to jump-start your own story and to share it with others.I found it thought provocing - answering questions about oneself, one's history, and future a wonderful communication tool.I enjoyed thinking about my naming process, secrets, values, and spirituality. The format of the book could be used in ways most suited to how I saw my own legacy.Being newly married I answered the questions for myself and then asked my husband about himself and his family-I learned new things about both.Whether you are married or single, have children or none, you will find your place is this beautifully written soul-searching book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings forth women's wisdom
I am a writer, counselor, and teacher in my 60's, married for over 40 years, with grown children and one grandchild. So I can recommend this book especially to midlife and older women. This book can help us harvest the fruits of our abundant life experience and share them with a wisdom-starved world.Read more

EXCELLENT book. I am not the best sometimes at reading nor finishing a book, however this one...I could not put it down. This book was great and she made it very easy to understand. Sometimes the Bible can be a bit hard to understand for some people so they just avoid and don't read. Reading this book will put it all in perspective for you in understanding these great women of the Bible. They all have stories in what you can relate to even in our times now. Its awesome and you will greatly enjoy it and it will greatly strengthen your faith in what God has for you. Its a great book for a womens Bible study group, I highly advise it. Sometimes you don't need all the fancy big books to get what you need out of it....

1-0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment
We purchased this book for our moms' Bible study group and are very disappointed by this book's peppy, shallow nature. For example, the chapters on Sarah's remarkable faith fail to mention Hagar and Ishmael. We will be abandoning our study of this book for one with a more complex and in depth discussion of the triumphs, struggles, and failures of women in the Bible ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration and helpful book for women
The introduction of this book is worth the retail price. It's an essay in itself. A sample sentence: "To have a friend is to acknowledge that some part of someone else's life which we have held tenderly, trustingly in our own hands might well die with us." Okay, it's a sentence you may have to read twice. But then you "get it," and you reflectively pause before continuing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful sampler from a gifted author
Having admired Sue Monk Kidd's nonfiction for years, I was thrilled at the chance to dip into her early essays -- and wasn't disappointed. This nicely arranged collection reveals Sue's gift for illuminating the sacred in life's most ordinary moments while it offers a tender glimpse into her early vocations as wife, mother, and nurse. Also included are pieces hinting at Kidd's spiritual struggles and epiphanies, which she expanded upon later in WHEN THE HEART WAITS and DANCE OF THE DISSIDENT DAUGHTER. This book is a lovely gift to all of us who've admired the work of this beloved author. It can be read and savored a little at a time, and will serve as a reminder to pause and appreciate the beauty in our own lives. -- Cindy La Ferle, author of WRITING HOME. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Story of Ruth
Jam packed with wisdom and insight for all people. A must read for all women and one that you will read many times. Sure wish I had this guide when I was a young woman. Plan to use as a discussion book for a spirituality group. A fabulous book to give as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivation for coping with the daily grind of life
I read "The Story of Ruth" about a year after I read "Scarred by Struggle," which is also by Dr.Chittister. Both books offer inspriation for dealing with difficulties based on a biblical story. The difference between the type of advice they offer, is that "The Story of Ruth," contends more with the daily struggles that confront us in our lives, whereas "Scarred by Struggle" offers advice more suitable to a particular setback, such as an end of a relationship, or loss of job.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Ruth-----A Beautiful Gift
Every mother should gift her daughter with this beautiful book! Joan Chittister unfolds beautifully and clearly what every mother wishes her daughters to know in order to become the full persons they were created to be.Each example from the Story of Ruth powerfully illustrates "delineating moments in every human life...... points after which we are never the same again".In The Story of Ruth, Joan Chittister shows us the qualities of Naomi and Ruth as they face life and make choices.... but more than that, Chittister confirms, refreshes and energizes the "stuff" that all women hold within themselves. This is an en-courgaging book for all women...mothers daughters, grandmothers.....women....single or married..... and it is also a book for MEN!For within these pages there is the depth of thought and experience lived by "the other half of humanity." Men will find the richness of this insight invaluable....an enhancement to their own perspective and attitude toward creation.

5-0 out of 5 stars redefining
After taking me the first 3 chapters to get going, I found that I couldn't put it down.I never really thought about how I fight and what I fight for. What an eye opener.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than worth the read!
"Fight Like a Girl" is empowering, honest and relateable. Once again, Lisa clearly communicates truths that so many women are searching for. In an understandable ways that encourages your intellect without insulting your intelligence, she encourages you to be the women you are. Femininity is strength. Kudos to Lisa for once again succeeding in reaching each and every generation and blessing them with a strength that can alter the course of their lives for the better!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I already loved Carolyn Custis James's writing after I read, "When Life and Beliefs Collide." (In fact, I require it in a seminary class I teach.) But after reading "Lost Women of the Bible" I'm convinced she is one of the most important voices in Christendom today. Through James's exporation of Esther, whom God used to rescue His people from genocide, we learn that God's design for woman is not to "be rescued by men" (as is often taught), but rather to partner with them. Through Tamar we see that a woman considered one of the bad girls of the Bible is actually a shining example of loyal love. James guides the reader to look afresh at these and other key Bible characters. In the process she helps both women and men see who God made them to be and how they are designed to interact. Hers is an important message for any era.
5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book
What an amazing read!Very thought provoking and enjoyable. Carolyn did an excellant job with her research into biblical times and even more so at using the choices of their lives to impact the lives that we live today.Definately one of the better books that I've read. Now I will have to get her other book, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A super book
This little gem of a book has such clarity and liveliness that I would not hesitate to put it into the hands of a teen; at the same time, it contains such significant theological insights that it also belongs in the hands of clergy and those in professional ministry. And women of all ages who are thirsting for strong biblical role models will indeed find the "strength and significance" James promises in her sub-title.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overkill
I was pretty disappointed with this book.I guess I went in with high expectations. In the beginning of the book, I thought it might be worthwhile, but as I read on.......the repetitive nature of the book got old very fast. The book could have gotten its message across with a lot less pages.I found the ceremonies that they had in there useless....I hope they don't recommend this book for someone that is lonely.I think the authors idea for the book was a good one, but the execution of their idea didn't deliver in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayer
I like the concept of viewing life and prayer through the four seasons.I like how the prayers can be used as an individual prays or for group prayer. The words speak to the heart when one does not have the words within. It encourages one to be aware of the presence of God in the day to day ordinary.Simple and direct yet challenging one to move from the head to the heart and be conscious of the movement of prayer.Helps to open our eyes and see life differently.A great addition and help especially when planning for prayer for groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apositive Catholic look
If you are looking for a stern, in-your-face, pre-Vatican ll book on religion, this is not it!What you will find is a beautiful spiritual companian written by two wise and sensitive nuns and gorgeously illustrated by another talented sister. This is a healing book for many, especially those who feel their Catholic faith has let them down at some point in their life. I think this would also be great for anyone who embraces Waldorf- style education or parenting.I absolutely loved it!!!!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful!! A very legalistic approach to the cross
I was introduced to Lady in Waiting a few years back and I was intrigued by the idea of "reckless abandoning to Jesus" because it focused on ways a woman can become better and more appealing based on how she relates to God. However, under careful reading I noticed that the book is very legalistic in how women are to approach their relationship to God. The book falsely conveys Ruth as being rewarded and approved by God only for performing ideal tasks and behaviors. Lady in Waiting promotes a guilt-driven works oriented standard to live up to in order to gain God's acceptance and maybe His reward (i.e. a husband) if He chooses to. The book is just not biblical based because many of the scriptures taken from Ruth(the book from the Bible)are wrong, twisted or out of context to fit the authors own ideas and objectives. It also seems like the authors neglect to reveal how through relationships good or bad, God is still able to move. Also that even if we fulfill this formula by becoming... (Lady of Purity, Faith) we may still not be liked, desired, or acceptable to people even if we are them "perfectly". We can not make ourselves holy only God can that is the purpose of having a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Also they try to subtly endorse the notion that Jesus can replace a woman's natural desire to be with a man. This may work briefly, but in the long run if it was truly the case, go back to Genesis and see that God Himself when He was with Adam saw it's not good for man to be alone and that's why He created a helpmeet. God never promotes the idea of Him being our partner until someone comes along to "take His place". I think that idea is diluted and pathetic. We are to worship God in truth and spirit. Lastly, the book weakly carries out its points and overly spiritualize concepts to the point of confusion.
4-0 out of 5 stars I am a lady in waiting...
I read Lady in Waiting several years ago while still in my early teens.I have refered back to it many times since then trying to grow my relationship with the Lord while I wait on my future husband.I agree that our ultimate goal is to be satisfied completely with Christ and His cross, but that is something we as humans won't be able to completely attain until we are in Heaven with Christ.Strive for contentedness yes, and find your significance in Him, but it's ok to long for a husband.Don't dwell on it, but to deny and ignore the longings of your heart to me is almost like denying and ingnoring the One who placed them there in the first place.
3-0 out of 5 stars Has good points but ultimately faulty
It's been awhile since I read "Lady in Waiting," so I'm going largely from memory here refreshed by other reviewers' comments.Nevertheless, I remember feeling unnecessarily guilt-tripped by this book, especially by the opening salvo of contrasting the heartbroken, lonely single woman with the content "lady in waiting," as if anyone who's ever had a crying jag after yet another friend's wedding is somehow spiritually inferior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short but beautiful book . . .
Gift of the Red Bird, a Spiritual Encounter, reads like a journal from Paula D'Arcy's life. On August 18, 1975, on a return trip home to Connecticut, Paula's car was struck by a drunk motorist. Her daughter, Sarah, died of head injuries on August 20, and her husband died three days later from a ruptured spleen. Paula was alive and three months pregnant with her second baby daughter, Beth. For this reason, she went on living.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Opinion
Men are notoriously insensitive and frequently behave in ways demeaning to women.I know this to be true because I'm describing myself. This is why a femanist will never be convicted with such a book.By means of argument, reason, and so-called "legalism", you can't drive a woman to believe in God-endorsed gender roles when excluding love.
3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by the decision to reissue without rewriting
This CBMW book advocates a He Leads/She Submits model of Christian marriage.I am disappointed by the decision to reissue the book without responding to Dr. Sarah Sumner's 2003 critique of this model in her book, Men, Women and the Church.Sumner points out that a wife's submission should be understood in the context of her husband's sacrifice, not his leadership.Additionally, it is not correct to define headship as leadership.Headship is a metaphor. While leadership may well be an important aspect of headship, leadership does not capture other facets of the metaphor and
